  • The DEEP-South (the Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky) photometric census of small Solar System bodies produces massive time-series data of variable, transient or moving objects as a by-product. To fully investigate unexplored variable phenomena, we present an application of multi-aperture photometry and FastBit indexing techniques for faster access to a portion of the DEEP-South year-one data. Our new pipeline is designed to perform automated point source detection, robust high-precision photometry and calibration of non-crowded fields which have overlap with previously surveyed areas. In this paper, we show some examples of catalog-based variability searches to find new variable stars and to recover targeted asteroids. We discover 21 new periodic variables with period ranging between 0.1 and 31 days, including four eclipsing binary systems (detached, over-contact, and ellipsoidal variables), one white dwarf/M dwarf pair candidate, and rotating variable stars. We also recover astrometry (< ${\pm}1-2$ arcsec level accuracy) and photometry of two targeted near-earth asteroids, 2006 DZ169 and 1996 SK, along with the small- (~0.12 mag) and relatively large-amplitude (~0.5 mag) variations of their dominant rotational signals in R-band.

  • We present the result of radial velocity observation of a W UMa type binary star EX Leo. We observed the star on February 16, 2003, using Long-Slit spectrograph of BOAO(Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory). Since the spectral lines are broad due to its fast rotation, it is difficult to distinguish two radial velocities from cross correlation function. Instead of cross correlation function, we used broadening function to develop our own code which estimate the radial velocity of the broadened line spectra. With our own code, radial velocities of primary and secondary stars are derived simultaneously. From the radial velocity curve fit, we obtained $K_1=50.24{\pm}8.29km/s$ and $K_2=254.05{\pm}20.984km/s$ respectively.

  • UBV observations of VV Cep were made in 1988-1992 as a part of the Ten-year Observing Program for Long Period Eclipsing Binary Stars(1982-1992) at Yonsei University Observatory. In addition to these the observations in the longer passbands in R and I are also made in the 1991-1992 season at the same observatory. Atmospheric extinction coefficinets determined by a comparison star 20 Cap for B and V each night have been deduced a linear relation, $K_B$=0.159+1.066kV. In this paper, light curves of this star in BVRI passbands for the 1991-1992 season only are presented. Two periodic light variations of both long-term and short-term are found as for 90 days and 20 days, respectively.

  • We have made UBV light curves of a newly discovered eclipsing binary, SAO23229 at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory. We determined a minimum light time of HJD2448636.1170$pm$0.0005 that is 3 minimum later than predicted time, and found a peculiar light variation at phase 0.75 that may not be secondary eclipse. Orbital period of SAO23229 would be 4.2 days rather than 2.1 days. Our analysis of the light curves shows that SAO23229 has a detached configuration consisting of two almost identical F type main sequence stars.

  • As part of the SPVS (Short-Period Variability Survey) which is a wide-field $(90'{\times}60')$ photometric monitering program at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy (BOAO), we performed V band time-series CCD photometric observations ofthe young open cluster NGC 129 for 11 nights between October 12, 2004 and November 3, 2005 using the 155mm refractor equipped with $3K{\times}2K$ CCD camera. From the observation we obtained 2400 V band CCD frames and color-magnitude diagram of the cluster. To transform instrumental magnitude to standard magnitude, we applied ensemble normalization technique to all observed time-series data. After the photometric reduction process, we examined variations of 9537 stars. As a result, sixty six of the new variable stars were discovered. To determine the periods of the sevariables, we used DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) and phase-matching technique. According to light curve shape, period, amplitude and the position on a C-M diagram, we classified these variables as 9 SPB type, 9 ${\delta}$ Scuti type, 29 eclipsing, 17 long term variables. However, two of them were not classified. From this study, we learned that small telescopes could be a very useful tool to observe variable stars in the open cluster in survey program.

  • All times of minimum light for two eclipsing binaries V343 Aql and CX Aqr were collected and analyzed to study their orbital period variations. It was found that the orbital periods for both stars have varied in a cyclical way superposed on a parabola. A secular period decrease of $-261{\times}10^{-7}$ d/y for V343 Aql was calculated while CX Aqr showed a secular period increase of $+2.55{\times}10^{-8}$8 d/y. Possible causes of secular period variations for two systems were discussed. The cyclical period variation was interpreted as light-time effect due to a third body. The resultant period, semiamplitude and eccentricity of the light time orbit were calculated to be 30.3y, 0.0092d and 0.85, respectively, for V343 Aql and 33.0y, 0.0037d and 0.64, respectively, for CX Aqr. The properties of the third bodies suggested in V343 Aql and CX Aqr systems were discussed.

  • High-precision photometric observations were performed in BVI bandpasses using Am robotic telescope at Mt. Lemmon Observatory for two binary stars, which are reclassified as W UMa-type systems from ROTSE(Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment) follow-up observations and show peculiar light variations. In order to analyze W UMa-type eclipsing binaries systematically, the light curve analysis script using 2005 version of Wilson-Devinney binary code is constructed. The orbital inclinations of GSC2S84-1731 and GSC2576-0319 are $43.^{\circ}5\;and\;57.^{\circ}6$ from light-curve analysis, respectively. Spot model is applied to explain the asymmetric light curve for GSC2S84-1731 and the spot parameters are derived.

  • High resolution spectroscopic observations of BX And using the BOBS (Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph) of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory (BOAO) were performod during 26-27, Feb. 2003. From the observations, we obtained 38 line spectra of BX And which cover all phases except the phase interval between $0.^p1$ and $0.^p3$. Both methods of the CCF (Cross-Correlation Function) and BF (Broadening Function) were used to get the radial velocities of primary and secondary components. Both velocities of the primary and secondary stars were calculated with the BF method while only primary velocities were determined with the CCF. Using new radial velocity curves, the maximum radial velocities of the primary and secondary stars were obtained as $K_1=90.1km/s\;and\;K_2=196.6km/s$, respectively. New absolute dimension of BX And was deduced with the combination of our spectroscopic solution with the photometric one of Bell et al. (1990).

  • AQ Cassiopeiae (BD+61`0242, uv=10, Sp=B3+Bg) is a totally eclipsing binary system with the obital period of about 12 days. 71 was observed for 15 nights in 1985 with the1.8-m telescope at the DAO, employing a Reticon and a three-stage image tube attached to the spectrograph. And also, photometric observations of AQ Cas had been made inUBv for six years from 1982 to 1988 at Yonsei University Observatory(YUO). This work includes UBV observations obtained at YUO as a part of The Ten-Year Observing Program(1982-1992). Double lined radial, velocity curves and Ufv light curves of AQC as are constructed. The light curves and radial velocity curves show a strong evidence of circumstellar matter or mass stream. It is clear at the phases of just outside externaleclipse contacts, particularly at phase 0.8-0.9, shown in Figures 1 and 2. A solution by combining the radial velocity and photometric curves of the binary was obtained with the Wilson-Devinney Code. We found that the system is semi-detached with the coolcomponent filling its Roche lobe. The absolute dimensions of AQ Cas are calculated. The result shows that this system consists of two massive and subgiant stars.
