  • The region of the marine environment between shallow waters and deep-sea (30-150 m in depth) is referred to as the twilight or mesophotic zone. This zone has been scarcely examined, as these depths are too shallow for safe submersible operation. Since 2018, a survey of mesophotic echinoderms in Korea has yielded many specimens of interest. In this study, we present two newly recorded echinoderms, Henricia irregularis and Parastichopus nigripunctatus based on morphological redescriptions with high-definition photographs and DNA barcoding data for P. nigripunctatus.

  • As a part of chemical study on the bioactive metabolites from marine organisms, we have investigated cytotoxicity using brine shrimp bioassay for each solvent fractions of the marine algae(12 species), marine sponges(3 species), coelenterates(2 species), echinoderms(4 species), marine molluscs(17 species), and ascidians(2 species), respectively. As the results, chloroform extract of Stichopus japonicus (LC$_{50}$ : 274 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), ethyl acetate extract of Anthocidaris crassispina(LC$_{50}$ : 121 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), n-butanol extract of Unda), ia Pinnatifida (LC$_{50}$ : 178 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), and water extract of Thais clavigera (LC$_{50}$ : 61 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) displayed the most significant cytotoxic activity against brine shrimp. Among the marine organisms tested, echinoderms and marine molluscs were thought to be the most active Phylums on screening of new bioactive compounds.

  • In echinoderms, the SALMFamide neuropeptides sharing the SxL/FxFamide motif seem widespread throughout the phylum and may be important signalling molecules that mediate various physiological functions. Recent identification of S1 and its analogues, MagS3 and MagS4, along with the S2 analogue, MagS2 from the starfish $Marthasterias$ $glacialis$, indicated that SALMFamides in the class Asteroidea are more diverse than previously thought. Further, isolation of the neuropeptides from the radial nerve cord and studies on pharmacological actions of the neuropeptides on the cardiac stomach warrant studies on the tissue distributions of these peptides in both the nervous and digestive systems. In the present study, antisera raised against an S1 analogue, KYSALMFamide, and an S2 analogue, KYSGLTFamide, were used to localize the distribution patterns of the S1- and S2-like immunoreactivities (S1-IR/S2-IR) in the nervous and digestive systems of the starfish. In the nervous system, cell bodies in the ectoneural part were immunostained for both S1 and S2 peptides, while in the digestive system, the basiepithelial plexus and mucosal cell bodies were immunoreactive. These immunocytochemical data support the notion that the SALMFamides may play a neuroendocrine role in mediating feeding behaviour of the starfish. Further studies including identification of peptide binding sites and differential expression pattern of mRNAs encoding the peptides are required to elucidate their physiological functions.

  • Micronesia is an island nation located north of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean. A survey was executed on Kosrae, which is one of the four main islands of Micronesia, during January 23-30, 2011 and January 8-15, 2012. The echinoderms were collected at eight intertidal areas and at 12 SCUBA diving points at depths of 10-50 m in the subtidal zone. They were identified based on morphological characteristics. In total, 50 species from 276 individuals were identified: three crinoids, 11 asteroids, seven ophiuroids, 10 echinoids, and 19 holothuroids. Among them, two crinoids, five asteroids, three ophiuroids, four echinoids and two holothuroids were newly recorded from Kosrae.

  • Three new species of Collocheres are described as associates of crinoid and ophiuroid echinoderms from Cheju Island, Korea: Collocheres brevipes n. sp. from the crinoids Comanthus solaster A. H. Clark and Decametra tigrina (A. H. Clark); C. solidus n. sp. from two species of the crinoids Comanthus solaster and Comanthus japonicus (Muller) and one species of ophiuroid-Ophiomastax mixta (Lutken); and C. tamladus n. sp. from the crinoid Catoptometra rubroflava (A. H. Clack). The three species are distinguished from one another and other congeners by the body size, dimension of caudal ramus and free segment of leg 5, and shape and ornamentation of urosome.

  • Two newly recorded sea stars, Henricia densispina (Sladen, 1879) and H. reniossa asiatica Djakonov, 1958, collected from the East Sea of Korea using fishing nets, were described in this study. Morphologically, H. densispina is characterized by the shape (sub-triangular) similarity of the intermarginal plates to the superomarginal plates. Henricia reniossa asiatica Djakonov, 1958, has long and slender arms (R/r=7.2-9.1); clustered abactinal paxillae with 3-13 abactinal spinelets; a denuded abactinal skeleton made up of crescentic, elongated cross-shaped, the presence of small ossicles that divided the papular areas; and an adambulacral armature comprised of 14-17 spinelets. This study provides the first occurrence of H. densispina and H. reniossa asiatica in the Korean fauna and a detailed morphological description of these species' key characteristics is provided.
