  • The outrigger system with a core is widely used for lateral load resisting system of tall building. Recently, structural systems in tall building are adopted to eccentric core and offset outrigger or one-armed outrigger system by trends in planning buildings of irregular type. Therefore, the performance of outrigger system with eccentric core in tall building is evaluated by 50-stories examples which are analyzed for variables such as layout of core and outrigger, arm length of outrigger and depth of outrigger and belt wall.

  • The eccentric extrusion and bending process for the forming of the curved rectangular hollow tube is newly developed. Generally the bending process of hollow tube is the secondary process followed by the extrusion process of the hollow tube from the round billet. So many defects such as wrinkling and the difference of wall thickness can be happened during the secondary bending process. In order to avoid the defects the new process named as "the eccentric extrusion and bending process" is suggested and applied to the U-bending of rectangular hollow tube. In this paper the kinematically admissible velocity field between the dies surface and the internal plug boundary surface s developed for the curving velocity. By the using of this curving velocity field the curvature of extruded products can be calculated with the parameters such as eccentricity dies length friction constant aspect ratio.

  • This paper describes experimental and theoretical investigations on the behaviour of thin walled composite (TWC) filled columns under eccentric loading conditions. Details of the experimental investigation including description of the test columns, testing arrangements, failure modes, strain characteristics, load-deformation responses and effects of various geometric and material parameters are presented. The current paper also introduces the use and effect of lightweight Volcanic Pumice Concrete (VPC) in TWC columns. Analytical models for the design of columns under eccentric loading conditions have been developed taking into consideration the effect of confined concrete. The performance of design equations is validated through experimental results. The proposed design models are found to produce better results compared with available design procedures and Code based formulations. A computer program is developed to generate the interaction diagrams based on the proposed design equations that can be used for design purposes.

  • Basic equations and their solution procedure we derived for the analysis of an annular pump seal in which the rotor has a large static displacement from the centered position. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a control volume set in the seal clearance and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in axial and circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about an eccentric position. Flow variables are expanded by using Fourier series for the solution procedure. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the 12 elements of rotordynamic coefficients of the eccentric annular pump seal. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients aye presented and compared with the Marquette's experimental results and the San Andres' theoretical analysis.

  • The kinematically admissible velocity field is developed for the eccentric extrusion of circular shaped products. The curving of product in extrusion is caused by the difference of the linearly distributed longitudinal velocity on the cross-section of the workpiece at the dies exit. The results of the eccentric extrusion by upper bound analysis show that the curvature of product increases with the increase in eccentricity of gravity center of the cross-section of workpiece at dies entrance from that of the corss-section at the dies exit end. By the DEFORMTM-3D analysis, the curving of circular shaped product in extrusion is changed by the eccentricity, die land length and the die length. The result of the analysis by DEFORMTM-3D software shows that the curvature of circular shaped product increases with the eccentricity. The two analysis and one experiment show the curving phenomenon in eccentric extrusion process.

  • The influence of bi-directional earthquake-induced loading on eccentric (plan-asymmetric) building systems has been investigated. In the first part of the study, comparisons have been made with equivalent results from uni-directional studies. The results are important in developing analytical models appropriate to the formulation of design recommendations. It is concluded that for valid comparisons, both perpendicular horizontal earthquake components must be considered when using models with transversely-orientated elements. In the second part of the study, an assessment has been made of a simplified, unidirectional (lateral) design approach. For stiffness-eccentric systems, the latter approach gives accurate and reasonably conservative estimates of the critical flexible-edge deformation, but may under estimate the stiff-edge element ductility demand by a factor of two in the short-period range.

  • In this paper, optics polishing technology using adaptive tool and eccentric motion mechanism was suggested. Optics polishing can make high reflective and accurate surface. The optics polishing process based on the eccentric motion mechanism has been used to manufacture the ophthalmic lens mold. Also ophthalmic lens mold factory hold conventionally a lot of the curved polishing tools for the versatile mold curves of eye diopters and want to reduce tool numbers. Therefore, a polishing machine with adaptive airbag tool was developed and experimentally verified in view of surface roughness and form accuracy.

  • An active mass damper system for flutter control of bridges is presented. Flutter stability of bridge structures is improved with the help of eccentric rotational actuators (ERA). By using a bridge girder model that moves in two degrees of freedom and is subjected to wind, the equations of motion of the controlled structure equipped with ERA are established. In order to take structural nonlinearities into consideration, flutter analysis is carried out by numerical simulation scheme based on a 4th-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. An example demonstrates the performance and efficiency of the proposed device. In comparison with known active mass dampers for flutter control, the movable eccentric mass damper and the rotational mass damper, the power demand is significantly reduced. This is of advantage for an implementation of the proposed device in real bridge girders. A preliminary design of a realization of ERA in a bridge girder is presented.

  • This study investigates the eccentric performance of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) stub columns strengthened with steel tube and sandwiched concrete (STSC) jackets. It was revealed that the STSC jacketing method effectively weakened the cracking of concrete in CFST columns on the convex side and the crash on the concave side. Substantial increases in the eccentric bearing capacities were demonstrated after strengthening. A numerical study was further conducted. The decrease in diameter-to-thickness ratio and increase in strength of outer tube contributed to increase in peak load of all components, whereas the increase in sandwiched concrete strength resulted in load increase on itself and had negligible effects on other components. The parametric study showed the effect of inner concrete strength on columns' bearing capacity was magnified after strengthening, whereas that of inner tube thickness was reduced. Within the parameters investigated, high-strength concrete and high-strength steel can be applied without the concern of early abrupt failure of inner low-strength concrete or steel tube.

  • Many experiments have been performed to investigate eccentric shear strength and unbalanced moment-carrying capacity of flat plate-column connections under combined gravity and lateral load. However, each existing experiment used different test setup, and the shear strength of the connection was different depending on the test setup. Current design methods which were based on the experimental results might not accurately explain the shear strength of the flat plate. In a companion study, based on results of nonlinear finite element analyses, an alternative design method for the plate-column connection was developed. However, in this method, eccentric shear strength of the connection which was required for assessing unbalanced moment-carrying capacity was evaluated by an empirical formula. In the present study, a theoratical approach using Rankine's failure criterion was attemped to investigate failure mechanism of the eccentric shear. Based on the results, an improved strength model of the eccentric shear was developed, and it was verified by comparison with the existing experimental results. By means of the strength model, the design method developed in the companion study was re-verified.
