This paper presents a mathematical model for optimizing earthwork allocation plan that minimizes earthwork cost. The model takes into account operational constraints in the real-world earthwork such as material-type (i.e., quality level of material) and quantities excavated from cut-sections, required quality of material and quantities for each embankment layer, top-down cutting and bottom-up filling constraints, and allocation orders. These constraints are successfully handled by assuming the rock-earth material as the three dimensional (3D) blocks. The study is of value to project scheduler because the model identifies the optimal earth allocation plan (i.e., haul direction (cut and fill pairs), quantities of soil, type of material, and order of allocations) expeditiously and is developed as an automated system for usability. It is also relevant to estimator in that it computes more realistic earthworks costs estimation. The economic impact and validity of the mathematical model was confirmed by performing test cases.

Earthwork is the starting work of construction process, which has the greatest impact on the productivity of the construction project among the works. However, it is difficult to derive accurate productivity becuase the earthwork plan is affected by geological condition of the jobsite. Therefore, a simulation model for productivity analysis of earthwork was developed using CYCLONE modeling method in this study. In this paper, simulation model was made considering the impact factors of earthwork productivity. The proposed model can be utilized for sensitivity analysis in future studies.

Purpose: Fine dust is classified as a group 1 carcinogen and poses a significant environmental problem that urgently requires improvement to protect the environmental rights of citizens. Given the difficulty of implementing measures to reduce overseas sources of fine dust, it is essential to first devise specific measures to address domestic emission sources. As such, this study aims to analyze the correlation between earthwork volume control and fine dust concentration as preliminary management measures to reduce the impact of scattering dust at construction sites. Based on real-time air quality information, field management measures will be presented to mitigate the effects of dust emissions. Research design, data and methodology: As examples, we selected construction sites that had recently undergone small-scale environmental impact assessment consultations. The standard earthwork volume was classified into grades using 20% intervals, and we applied AERMOD to predict the weighted concentration of fine dust based on the earthwork volume class and analyzed its correlation. Results: The results of this study demonstrate a strong correlation between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration. By utilizing the correlation analysis between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration on-site, this finding can be utilized as an effective fine dust management plan. Conclusions: This involves determining the daily earthwork intensity based on real-time air quality information and implementing measures to reduce scattering dust.

The former researches on earthwork automation were mainly focused on GPS and sensor application, environment modelling, equipment path planning, work information management, and remote control etc. Recently, reducing $CO_2$ emission becomes one of main focuses for an automation research. In the case of earthwork operations, many kinds of construction machines or robots are involved, which can cause high level of $CO_2$ in a construction site. An effective earthwork plan and construction machine operation can both increase productivity and safety and decrease $CO_2$ emission level. In this research, some automation concepts for green earthworks are suggested such as a 3D construction site model, a 3D earthwork distribution based on two different earthwork methods, and an earthwork package construction method. A excel-based simulator is developed to generate the 3D earthwork distribution and to estimate the level of $CO_2$ emission for the given earthwork.

Earthwork is an operation that provides space for structures, and it takes up a large portion of the construction costs in a construction project. In large-scale earthwork, numerous types of construction equipment are used in the operation. The types of equipment should be selected based on the field conditions and the construction methods. These construction vehicles are constantly changing positions during the earthwork operation. Therefore, the equipment operators require effective communication to ensure the efficiency of the earthwork operation. All equipment operators should exchange information with the other equipment operators. Information should be exchanged continuously to support decision making and increase productivity during the earthwork operation at the construction site. This paper investigates the attributes required for an information interface between construction vehicles during an earthwork operation. This paper 1) discusses the importance of an information interface for construction vehicles in order to increase productivity during an earthwork operation, 2) analyses the types of attributes that need to be communicated between construction vehicles, and 3) provides a database that has been built for attribute control. The database built for the information interface between construction vehicles will enhance communication between vehicle operators. Table I shows the typical attributes that should be shared between the excavator operator and the dump truck operator. This information needs to be shared among the operators, as it helps them to plan the earthwork operation in a more efficient manner. A database has been developed to store this information in an entity relation diagram. A user-interface display environment is also developed to provide this information to the operators in the construction vehicles. The proposed interface can help exchange information effectively and facilitate a common understanding during the earthwork operation. For example, the vehicle operators will be aware of the planned volume, excavated volume, transportation time, and transportation numbers. As a part of this study, mobile devices, such as mobile phones and google glasses, will be used as hands-on communication tools.
The purpose of this study is digitalization of earthwork such as development of 3D terrain analysis platform using latest technologies including unmanned aerial vehicle and terrestrial laser scanner to ultimately achieve earthwork automation. It is necessary to develop related element technologies and to establish regulations so that it can be applied to the domestic construction projects. As a result of pilot project about the earthwork surveying automation technology, it was confirmed that information such as terrain coordinates, soil, boring, and excavation volume is acquired smoothly. In this paper, we investigate related regulations and manuals in Japan and propose the improvement plan of domestic regulation. We plan to study regulations from early to final construction stage, combine with the 'regulation for public surveying', and improve the regulations in detail.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the optimized transfer algorithm of earthwork considering the precluded area such as the lake, bogs. The earthwork transfer plan in massive cutting and banking should be established because of affecting the construction cost highly. Until now, there was the study about the optimized earthwork transfer model considering the OR(Operating Research). but isn't the study about the model considering the precluded area such as the lake, bogs. In most cases, the engineer adjusts the earthwork transfer path considering the precluded area, manually. The presented model suggests to calculate various visibility paths with $A^*$algorithm after converting the precluded area to polygon topology. By using this paths, the minimum cost path to optimize the earthwork transfer can be obtained. In this study, the validity of the model was proved as implementing the system for the optimized earthwork transfer considering the precluded area.

Land development is an essential process to provide lands for housing, industrial, and tourism complex. The development and application of construction automation technology in land development construction are, however, not matured yet. Since land development requires massive investment in terms of cost and effort, the benefits of implementing earthwork construction automation technology could also be enormous. As such, the deployment of advanced technology needs to be assessed. In this paper, by investigating domestic and international advanced earthwork technology, 8 candidate technologies to be developed is derived. These technologies are then prioritized using AHP and web-based survey that distributed to experts in the field of civil and infrastructure. As a result, advanced earthwork fleet management platformization and tele-operation systems for unmanned earthwork are identified as the top priority. Besides through sensitivity analysis, the trends of the technology rank by the weight distribution of the evaluation factor is investigated. Consequently, the research and development processes for the earthwork construction automation technology in land development are explored and based on the results, the research and development road map plan is established.

The existing literature has witnessed the importance of productivity assessment and deducing factors affecting it. However, yet many models have shown limitations in practical applications in actual construction sites for process planning due to uncertainty and lack of data. This research presents a productivity assessment and database generation framework using simulation and compares the results with RSMeans to derive appropriate equipment combinations alternatives for earthwork operations. Data of 15 different conditions was collected from 5 different construction sites. Prediction accuracy above 90% were achieved for the simulation models with average error rate of 7.4%. The construction productivity assessment framework presented in this study is expected to be highly applicable to operation planning for earthwork operations.
The calculation of earthwork plays a major role in plan or design of many civil engineering projects and thus it has become very important to advanced the accuracy of earthwork calculation. The purpose of this paper is to calculate the excavation volume of terrain using a proposal area formular in eathwork volume determination for reclamation of the harbor. A proposal area formular by first and third equation is compared with end area, middle area, prismoidal formula by trapezoidal, simpson formular to excavation volume for an experimental terrian $1\sim12$. As a result of this study, algorithm of a proposal area formula by prismoidal formula should provide a better accuracy than end area, middle area, prismoidal formula by trapezoidal formular, simpson formular.
