The study, with regard to unsymmetrically inclined backfilled wall, was intended to estimate the lateral earth pressure, develop the equation for lateral earth pressure and eventually identify the mutual behavior, based on the modified Kellogg theory, while changing the width between the walls, wall angle, relative density and wall friction angle. To verify the geostatic pressure obtained from the study, the results in the wake of 62 kinds of model tests performed were compared and evaluated with the behaviors based on theoretical equations. As a result, the wall inclination angle was found to be the factors affecting the earth pressure the most, when both walls were inclined unsymmetrically. And the narrower the backfill space and the larger the wall inclination angle to the horizontal level, the greater the effect of the wall friction. The equation considering the wall friction reaction indicated the value, which was closer to the actually-measured earth pressure, and when the width between the warts was narrow, the arching effect appeared to be great, thereby indicating the difference between the measured earth pressure, theoretically calculated earth pressure and the geostatic pressure proved to be insignificant.
Earth pressure due to gravity generally increases linearly with the depth, but the distribution of earth pressure due to surface load depends on the loading condition, the ground condition, and the boundary condition. In this study, the earth pressure on a rigid wall due to the vertical surface load was measured in experiments. Rigid wall was built in the model test box, and it was filled with homogeneous sandy ground (width 30 cm, height 88 cm, length 110 cm). Rigid wall was composed of 8 segments, which were tested on the two load cells. In the tests, we observed the distribution of the earth pressure on the rigid wall depending on the vertical surface load and it's location. According to the test results, the lateral earth pressure due to the vertical surface load showed its maximum value at a constant depth and decreased with the depth, to the negligible value at the critical depth. The critical depth and the depth at which lateral earth pressure reaches its maximum were not decided by the magnitude of the vertical surface load. They were dependant on the distance from the rigid wall.
Current methods to estimate the earth pressure for retaining wall analysis are based on Rankine or Coulomb approaches, in which the soil mass behind wall is assumed to reach to failure state with sufficient lateral movements. Some of recent research works carried out by field measurements reveal that the active earth. pressures by Ranking or Coulomb method are underestimated. It means that the lateral movements of wall and soil would not be mobilized enough to reach the failure state. In this study, the finite element method with Drucker -Prager model for soil is employed to investigate the behavior of concrete cantile, tier retaining wall, together with the influence of inclined backfill. The results indicate that the earth pressures on the retaining wall are strongly related to the mobilized lateral movements of wall and soil and that Ranking and Coulomb methods underestimate the resultant earth pressures and the increasing effect on earth pressure by inclined backfill. Based on this study, a simplified method to determine to earth pressures on cantilever retaining wall with horizontal backfill is proposed.
We intends to understand the rammed earth method and suggest the possibilities of adoption on high-rise rammed earth structures through the case study on the method. The rammed earth construction has been regarded as one of the solutions in the modern environmental-friendly construction field, thus according to such trend, this study tries to find out the limitations of the rammed earth structures to be multistory and grope for solutions in the attached wall construction method. The procedures of this research is to figure out the limitations of rammed earth structures through theoretical consideration on those structures and analyze the actual cases of them, and to assure the possibilities on the development of the rammed earth method that can make the structures multistory earthen structures in the rammed earth method and induce immediate issues for it.
This paper describes the stability evaluation of reinforced earth wall using geosynthetic strip based on field test. The wall facing, which is applied in field, is able to present excellent scenery, and the reinforcement has improvement effect of pullout resistance based on rounded band anchor. The measurement is conducted according to construction elapsed time of structure for earth pressure, horizontal displacement of wall facing and reinforcement strain in field test. The evaluation results show that the measured earth pressure is less than theoretical earth pressure due to dispersion effect of earth pressure by geosynthetic strip. The horizontal displacement of wall facing is also satisfied a empirical criteria. The measured strain of reinforcement had nearly no effect on stability of the reinforced earth wall. Therefore, the geosynthetic strip with rounded band anchor can be applied in the reinforced earth wall, and the reinforced earth wall with geosynthetic strip can be commonly used in field because it has a structural stability.

This paper intends to investigate such effects through experiments. The contents of the investigation are effects of position of repeated loading and unloading, passing frequency. For the purpose of the investigation an experimental load-deflection system is developed and the system is possible to measure deflection of the wall and earth pressure due to different size of strip loading and cyclic loading. The findings from the experiments are as follows: 1. As repeated loading approaches to the wall, the measured horizontal residual earth pressure agrees well with Rowe's empirical formula, while as the loading is far from the wall the earth pressure consists with Boussinesq's and Spangler's formulas. Also it is found that below 0.6m depth from ground surface the effects of repeated loading can be nearly neglected. 2. From comparison analyses of earth pressure theories and experimental results, a reagression equation is suggested herein, and earth pressure at any depth and maximum earth pressure due to cyclic loading can be estimated from the equation.
In this paper, the active lateral earth pressure is evaluated using the stress characteristics or slip line method. The lateral earth pressure is expressed as the lateral earth pressure coefficients due to the surcharge, the unit weight and cohesion of the backfill soil. Seismic horizontal and vertical pseudo-static coefficients are used to consider the seismic effects. The equilibrium equations along the characteristics lines are solved by the finite difference method. The slope of the ground surface, the wall angle and the adhesion and friction angle of the soil-wall interface are also considered in the analysis. A computer code is provided for the analysis. The code is capable of solving the characteristics network, determining active lateral earth pressure distribution and calculating active lateral earth pressure coefficients. Closed-form solutions are provided for the lateral earth pressure coefficients due to the surcharge and cohesion. The results of this study have a good agreement with other reported results. The effects of the geometry of the retaining wall, the soil and soil-wall interface parameters are evaluated. Non-dimensional graphs are presented for the active lateral earth pressure coefficients.

In this paper, a dynamic centrifuge model test was conducted on a 24.8-meter-deep excavation consisting of a 20 m sand layer and 4.8 m bedrock, classified as S3 by Korean seismic design code KDS 17 10 00. A braced excavation wall supports the hole. From the results, the mechanism of seismically induced earth pressure was investigated, and their distribution and loading points were analyzed. During earthquake loadings, active seismic earth pressure decreases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill laterally expands at the movement of the wall toward the active direction. Yet, the passive seismic earth pressure increases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill pushes to the wall and laterally compresses at it, moving toward a passive direction and returning to the initial position. The seismic earth pressure distribution shows a half-diamond distribution in the dense sand and a uniform distribution in loose sand. The loading point of dynamic thrust corresponding with seismic earth pressure is at the center of the soil backfill. The dynamic thrust increased differently depending on the backfill's relative density and input motion type. Still, in general, the dynamic thrust increased rapidly when the maximum horizontal displacement of the wall exceeded 0.05 H%.

Numerical analysis was carried out in order to simulate the development of the large deformation that took place on the reinforced earth wall, a part of the Tottori expressway planned to pass Hyogo, Japan. Since this reinforced earth wall had experienced unexpected deformation of the wall during construction, the wall was re-constructed twice. However, the wall deformation showed no sign to cease even at the final stage of the construction. Countermeasures to re-stabilize the wall were demanded. In part I of this paper, it was manifested that subsidence of a 3-meter weak soil due to seepage flow was responsible for the large deformation. A part of concrete panel wall was severely damaged due to extremely large pulling force of geotextile induced by the hammock state. As for the countermeasures, "grouting with slag system" was applied to fill voids of the backfill, and also to prevent further development of settlement in the weak soil layer. "Ground anchor" was also considered to achieve the prescribed factor of safety.
