This study used in vivo intracellular recording in rat hippocampus to evaluate the effect of lidocaine and MK-801 on the membrane properties and the synaptic responses of individual neurons to electrical stimulation of the commissural pathway. Cells in control group typically fired in a tonic discharge mode with an average firing frequency of $2.4{\pm}0.9$ Hz. Neuron in MK-801 treated group (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.) had an average input resistance of $3.28{\pm}5.7\;M{\Omega}$ and a membrane time constant of $7.4{\pm}1.8$ ms. These neurons exhibited $2.4{\pm}0.2$ ms spike durations, which were similar to the average spike duration recorded in the neurons of the control group. Slightly less than half of these neurons were firing spontaneously with an average discharge rate of $2.4{\pm}1.1$ Hz. The average peak amplitude of the AHP following the spikes in these groups was $7.4{\pm}0.6$ mV with respect to the resting membrane potential. Cells in MK-801 and lidocaine treated group (5 mg/kg, i.c.v.) had an average input resistance of $3.45{\pm}6.0\;M{\Omega}$ and an average time constant of $8.0{\pm}1.4$ ms. The cells were firing spontaneously at an average discharge rate of $0.6{\pm}0.4$ Hz. Upon depolarization of the membrane by 0.8 nA for 400 ms, all of the tested cells exhibited accommodation of spike discharge. The most common synaptic response contained an EPSP followed by early-IPSP and late-IPSP. Analysis of the voltage dependence revealed that the early-IPSP and late-IPSP were putative $Cl^--and\;K^+-dependent$, respectively. Systemic injection of the NMDA receptor blocker, MK-801, did not block synaptic responses to the stimulation of the commissural pathway. No significant modifications of EPSP, early-IPSP, or late-IPSP components were detected in the MK-801 and/or lidocaine treated group. These results suggest that MK-801 and lidocaine manifest their CNS effects through firing pattern of hippocampal pyramidal cells and neural network pattern by changing the synaptic efficacy and cellular membrane properties.
Recently, there is greater demand for stable supply of electric power as higher level of our living. It becomes the important problem that the cause of fault in power system is found out in early stage, if once it occurs. In this respect, accurate classification of arcing faults in power systems is vitally important. This paper presents a new classification method for arcing faults in power system. To obtain data of various faults including high impedance fault(HIF) and low impedance fault(LIF), HIF model with the ZnO arrester is adopted and implemented within the overall transmission system model based on the electromagnetic transients program(EMTP). Results of phase plane trajectory if Clarke modal transformation using postfault current and voltage are utilized to classify types of arcing faults. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a typical 154 kV korean transmission system under various fault conditions. As can be seen from results, phase plane trajectory of postfault current should be combined with that of o component from Clarke modal transformation to give reliability of clear fault classification. Thus the proposed method can classify arcing faults including LIFs and HIFs accurately in power systems.

As a LCD monitor is larger and thinner, a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) for backlight in LCD monitor gradually becomes longer and thinner. The backlight of a large LCD monitor, however, has a limitation in its brightness. In this study, a parallel multi-lamp is used in order to supply enough brightness. Though the CCFLs are made through a detail and equal manufacturing process, they don't have exactly the same features individually in their brightness, frequency, voltage and current. Consequently, it is difficult to have equal brightness at an early lighting condition or during lighting time. In this paper, a parallel multi-lamp which can have the same output under the same condition is designed. For this, 18 inch LCD monitor with four lamps is used. An inverter for multi-lamp driving is also used in this study. The newly designed inverter shows more than $90\%$ efficiency in its brightness input and output. Besides, it is also available for a multi-drive of other lamps.
In the early design stage of underwater vehicles, it is important to estimate the vehicle's underwater motion performance. The key design elements for the motion are propellers, battery power, and underwater resistance of the vehicle. Small thrusters with motor and propeller are usually used for the UUV(unmanned underwater vehicles). In this study, a multiphysics thruster model combining electro-mechanical and hydrodynamics characteristics was proposed to estimate the thruster performance. To show the applicability of the mathematical model, an sample thruster was used for the derive the unknown parameters of thruster. Hydrodynamic parameters were calculated for a 3D geometry model of the propeller by ANSYS/CFX program. Finally, Matlab/simulink program was used for the numerical simulation to predict the thruster performance from the given voltage/current input to the motor. Also, proved validity of simulation model by experiment test. Test were done by 2 mode(middle/high speed, reverse). The thruster performance curves obtained from this simulation were confirmed to be similar with experiment results.
Carbon/epoxy composite(CFRP) coupons previously damaged by low velocity impact were tested under static tensile loading and microscope progress of damage was characterized by ultrasonic C-scan, Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) and Acoustic Emission(AE) techniques which were based on the application of elastic waves. The degress of impact damage has been correlated with the AE activity during monotonic or loading/unloading tensile testing as well as the result of ultrasonic test. The coupons were subjected to impact velocities ranged from 0.71 to 2.17 m/sec, which introduced the amount of damage rated as 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% with reference to the total absorbed energy at fracture. Special attention was paid to determine optimal AE parameters to characterize the microscopic fracture process and to predict the residual strength of composite laminates. AE RMS voltage during the early stage of tensile loading was found an effective parameter to quantify the degree of impact damage. It was also found that the Felicity ratio is closely related to the stacking sequence and the residual strength of the CFRP laminates.
Resistance switching memory cells were fabricated using atomically dispersed Pt-$SiO_2$ thin film prepared via RF co-sputtering. The memory cell can switch between a low-resistance-state and a high-resistance-state reversibly and reproducibly through applying alternate voltage polarities. Percolated conducting paths are the origin of the low-resistance-state, while trapping electrons in the negative U-center in the Pt-$SiO_2$ interface cause the high-resistance-state. Intermediate resistance-states are obtained through controlling the compliance current, which can be applied to multi-level operation for high memory density. It is found that the resistance value is related to the capacitance of the memory cell: a 265-fold increase in resistance induces a 2.68-fold increase in capacitance. The exponential growth model of the conducting paths can explain the quantitative relationship of resistance-capacitance. The model states that the conducting path generated in the early stage requires a larger area than that generated in the last stage, which results in a larger decrease in the capacitance.
GCB(Gas Circuit Breaker) and GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear) using $SF_6$ are worldwidely applied over 72.5KV classes. It Is known that $SF_6$ gas has the most superior characteristics among the extingushing and insulating media. Our Company has produced GCB and GIS from early 1980's and at present, we are producing 362KV 40KA class which is the highest voltage in our country. According to change KEPCO's standards (ESB standards), our company has redeveloped and tested for all productions type from 1989. During redeveloping, we largely contribute raise reliability of power system, through all the more improvement for performance and quality of manufactures. One of them, we developed 170KV 50KA GCB with common three-pole operating mechanism and sucessfully completed test of KERI under KEPCO presence, at first in our country. Thus, we announce the outline of it.
Recently, much attentions have been paid on the commercialization of PEMFC, especially for the applications of residential and portable. In order to achieve the early commercialization of PEMFC, thee are two hurdles to overcome. One is cost down and the other is improvement of durability of the system components. Numerous companies have tried to reduce the production cost and the main research topics have been changed from performance to durability improvement. In this work, acceleration test were performed to find and evaluate the main reason of degradation of the MEA(membrane-electrode assembly) which is one of the core component of the PEMFC system. Based upon the test results, a way to make durable MEA was suggested. Acceleration tests were made by applying high voltage of 1.2V to the several kinds of single cells to increase the growth of catalyst particles. Cell performance, ac-impedance and electrochemically active area measurements were made atfter every 8 hours of acceleration test. Degradations of catalyst and membrane were examined by SEM, TEM and XRD. Obtained results were discussed in terms of structural stability and loss of catalyt and ionomers in the electrode layer. In addition, the way to make highly durable MEA was suggested.

The Electro-optical camera subsystem as a payload of a satellite system consists of OM (optical module) and CEU(camera electronics unit), and most performances of the camera subsystem depend a lot on the CEU in which TDI CCDs(Time Delayed Integration Charge Coupled Device) take the main role of imaging by converting the light intensity into measurable voltage signal. Therefore it is required to specify and design the CEU very carefully at the early stage of development with overall specifications, design considerations, calibration definition, test methods for key performance parameters. This paper describes the overview of CEU development. It lists key requirement characteristics of CEU hardware and design considerations. It also describes what kinds of calibration are required for the CEU and defines the test and evaluation conditions in verifying requirement specifications of the CEU, which are used during acceptance test, considering the fact that CEU performance results change a lot depending on test and evaluation conditions such as operational line rate, TDI level, and light intensity level, so on.
