Ford Madox Ford, the early twentieth-century writer most famous for his novel The Good Soldier, perceived his "business in life [as an] ... attempt to discover and to try to let you see where you stand." With this grand purpose in mind, Ford disregarded distinctions of genre in his prolific output of what we would consider novels, memoirs, literary criticism, travel writing, and history. Claiming that "the Novelist ... [is a] historian of his own time," Ford sought his own version of the "truth," a truth that was more faithful to his own subjective impressions than to verifiable "fact." Among these works that depict his age are a series of "memoirs" or "reminiscences," works published from the 1910s to the 1930s which carry out his Impressionistic purpose. What lies behind these memoirs is Ford′s view that his own individual history can be understood as his contemporary society′s collective history. This article explores Ford′s experimentation with boundaries of fact and fiction, and history and narrative, as he employs and expands the memoir form. In particular, 1 focus on two works, Memories and Impressions (1911) and It Was the Nightingale (1933), and Ford′s techniques in these memoirs, such as 1) the adoption of fictional personae from which to comment on his society at large and 2) the use of emblematic "parables" to encapsulate larger lessons of life within the minutiae of existence. Current theorists on the memoir form share interests in these questions of genre and of the social role of the memoir Nancy Miller, for instance, terms the memoir "the record of an experience in search of a community." This article engages these current discussions of the memoir genre by examining Ford′s early twentieth-century examples as innovative experiments that play with the boundaries between fiction and history, and personal impressions and collective truth.

The egg development and early life history of Acheilognathus majusculus which is Korean endemic species from Yeong river were observed under the controlled water temperature, $18.0{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs are opaque yellow in color and round oval shaped measuring 2.12 (2.08~2.18) mm in length and 1.86 (1.80~1.98) mm in breadth. The number of eggs averaged 72 (40~112) per an oviposition. The eggs of this species began to hatch about forty three hours after insemination and the total length of larvae was 4.23 mm mean. S form moving of larvae were not observed during larval development. The larvae reached at the heterotrophic stage about twenty-five days after hatching. It is estimated that the larvae was comming out from freshwater bivalve since that time in nature. A. majusculus was grew up to be adult stage enough which can be join to new production for three hundred days after hatching with over 67.8 mm in total length.

The egg development and early life history of Acheilognathus macropterus from Japan which is an exotic bitterling from China were observed under the controlled water temperature, $20.0{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs are opaque yellow in color and long elliptic globe shaped measuring $2.78{\pm}0.12mm$ in length and $1.44{\pm}0.04mm$ in breadth. The number of egg averaged 151 per an oviposition. The eggs of this species began to hatch about seventy eight hours after insemination and the mean of total length of larvae were 3.8 mm. S form moving of larvae were observed from three days after hatching. The larvae reached at the heterotrophic stage about twenty-five days after hatching. Morphological character and analysis of cytochrome DNA of this species from Japan were relatively similar to Korean but spawned egg shape was different remarkably. Taxonomical research is necessary in the future.
The spine loach, Cobitis hankugensis endemic to Korea were collected at the Nokdong River, Unbong-eup, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do during June 2007 for study its eggs development and early life history. The eggs were obtained by injecting gonadotropin (LHRH-1) to female and were fertilized by dry method in the laboratory condition. The matured eggs were separative, demersal and light yellowish with $1.29{\pm}0.07mm$ in diameter average. Under $23{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, the eggs were hatched in 45~52 hours after fertilization, and just hatching larvae were $4.5{\pm}0.24mm$ in total length. On 5 days after hatching, they were $6.6{\pm}0.13mm$ in total length and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. From 25 days after hatching, they became the juvenile stage with $9.0{\pm}0.49mm$ in total length. On the 100 days after hatching, their external forms and band patterns were similar to those of adults with average $27.3{\pm}2.82mm$ in total length.
Some of ecological factors and the early life history of endangered freshwater fish, Pseusobagrus brevicorpus, were investigated to proliferate artificially and to restore the population by release seedlings. The density of population in restricted area by small scale dam was 1.25 ind. $m^{-2}$, and the low capacity for reproduction having 200$\sim$250 eggs ind$^{-1}$. were thought to be a reason of this endangered situation. From the result of induction of natural spawning in aquarium after hormone injection it was considered that the spawning substrate would be aquatic plants with slender branches. The hatching was observed after 50 hrs after fertilization and the larvae showed aggressive behavior. Yolk was almost absorbed 3 days after hatching, and the larvae shaped tad-pole grew up to fry after 30 days. We discussed on the strategies for conservation of this species according to those results from investigation on ecology and early life history.
An artificial breeding method was carried out to investigate development of eggs and the early life history of Iksookimia longicorpa. The eggs of the female were obtained by injecting gonadotropin (LHRH) and fertilizingby the dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were separate, demersal, light yellowish, and averaged $1.53{\pm}0.07mm$ in diameter. In water temperature of $23{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, the eggs hatched in 50~72 hours after fertilization, and their lengths reached $5.1{\pm}0.23mm$ in total length. On Day 4 after hatching, they averaged $7.1{\pm}0.47mm$ in total length and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. From 25 days after hatching, they attained a juvenile stage reaching $12.8{\pm}0.49mm$ in total length. On the 100th dayafter hatching, their band patterns and external form were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $38.5{\pm}2.95mm$ in total length.
The morhology and life history of Stylonema cornu-cervi Reinsch from Japan were investigated. The species had multiseriate erect thalli from a basal cell. The thalli usually branched dichotomously, occasionally trichotomously near the base, and non-branched thalli were sometimes observed. A dichotomous branch on the upper portion near the base occurred only one time on each erect branch. Cells contained a stellate chloroplast, which was composed of a central rounded part with an obscure pyrenoid and 5-8 cup-like lobes connected to the central part by a small thin stipe. The biseriate part was observed on the six-celled stage in culture, and the grown thalli were multiseriate except for base and apices. Monospores forming from the immediate transformation of vegetative cells were observed. Thalli grew at 15-25$^{\circ}C$ and died at 10 and 30$^{\circ}C$. The fastest growth and maturation were observed under 25$^{\circ}C$ and 14L:10D. Although S. alsidii (Zanardini) Drew usually had uniseriate thalli, irregularly branched multiseriate thalli had been reported in cultures. It is possible that in the previous report the thalli were confused with S. cornu-cervi. In this report, S. cornu-cervi were distinguished from S. alsidii in that the branches were few, the multiseriate portions were observed on the early stage (six-celled stage), and the grown thalli were multiseriate except at the base and apices.
Egg development and early life history of the endangered species, Microphysogobio rapidus was investigated to get a basic information for biological characteristics and recovery strategy. Eggs were obtained from females by injecting Ovaprim (0.5 mL/kg) and artificially fertilized by dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were slightly adhesive and separated with light bluish green and $0.63{\pm}0.02mm$ (n=20) in diameter. Number of eggs in the ovaries were $3,827{\pm}1,225$ (2,850 ~ 5,916). The hatching occurred at 72 hours after fertilization under water temperature of $21{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larvae were $2.79{\pm}0.04mm$ (n=10) in total length. At 5 days after hatching, they were average $4.10{\pm}0.07mm$ (n=10) in TL and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. 30 days after hatching, they became to juvenile stage and reached $9.74{\pm}0.24mm$ (n=10) in TL. At 100 days after hatching, the band patterns and external form were similar to those of adults, average $27.00{\pm}1.94mm$ (n=10) in TL.
Kim Su-On(1409~1481) was a editor in King Sejong's times who worked on the publication of "Euibangyoochui(醫方類聚)" and other major publications led by the royal family. This paper will review the works of Kim Su-On based on the medical background of early Joseon Dynasty and the medical book-reading officer system, and also evaluate his contribution to the development of medicine in early Joseon Dynasty, factoring in his life, ideas, and literary talent. By looking at the life of Kim Su-On, we can understand the role of Confucian doctors(儒醫) in the early Joseon Dynasty, how Confucian scholars who were learned in medicine supervised the compilation and correction of "Euibangyoochui(醫方類聚)". Especially, from the poetry of "Sikujip(拭疣集)", contents regarding the proofreading of "Euibangyoochui(醫方類聚)" between Im Won-jun and Kim Su-On shows the publication process of "Euibangyoochui(醫方類聚)" at the reign of King Sungjong. His outstanding achievements are largely due to the medical book-reading officer system implemented around the time "Euibangyoochui (醫方類聚)" was published. The medical book-reading officer system aimed to increase the knowledge of various matters for the civil service bureaucrats, allowing them to become high-ranking officials in the fields of technology. Its another purpose was to compile specialty publications. Many of the civil service bureaucrats who participated in the medical book publications arranged the theoretical basis of medicine and modified experience medicine to a new medical system. The first edition of "Euibangyoochui(醫方類聚)" at King Sejong's reign collected vast medical information into 365 books. Then it was corrected during King Sejo's reign then finally completed and published at King Seongjong's reign. During this period, the experience medicine inherited from Goryeo Dynasty was reestablished into a new form of theoretical interpretation.
This study was to explore the life history of an elderly woman who had six times of imprisonment and entered a Samchung re-education camp. This study of life history followed the analysis of Mandelbaum(1973) pointing three perspectives of life: dimensions, turnings, and adaptations. Participant's dimensions of life were exploitation of labor, hostess life for U.S. military, prison life, Samchung re-education camp, marriage with the disabled, life of a farm worker. Turnings of life were serving as a maid, confinement of prison, life of hostess for living, being remanded to Samchung re-education camp by state violence, marriage and divorce, denial of social welfare service. Adaptations of life were downright adaptation in early life, exaggerated act in juvenile reformatory, prostituted women as a simple fortune-maker, adaption as a good wife and wise mother after marriage, resistive adaption as a self-employed. and farm worker. Based upon this results outcome, discussions and implications were suggested.
