  • Asymmetrical reinforcement for circular sections in wall piles is an efficient construction component with reduced embodied energy. It has been proven that asymmetrical reinforced wall piles may save more than 50% of the reinforcement than the traditional symmetrically reinforced circular sections. The use of this new type of structural member increases the number of variables in the design problem, which makes its use by engineers more complicated. In order to facilitate the use of the asymmetrically reinforced piles, this paper presents a criterion for the design of this type of structural member. The chosen criterion has been analyzed with the help of flexural capacity-cost curves. The new criterion is similar to the design procedure traditionally used for RC beams.

  • It is difficult for mobile learners to maintain a high level of concentration when learning content for more than an hour while they are on the move. Despite the attention span issue, many m-learning systems still provide their mobile learners with the same content once used in e-learning systems. This has called for an investigation to identify the suitable characteristics of the m-learning environment. With this in mind, we have conducted a survey in hopes of determining the requirements for developing more suitable m-learning content. Based on the results of the survey, we have developed a content model comprised of two types: a segment type and a supplement type. In addition, we have implemented a prototype system of the content model for Apple iPhones and Android smartphones in order to investigate a feasibility study of the model application.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of an arc-type linear pulse motor(ALPM) with permanent magnet are analysed using analytical and 2-D finite element method. To verify the analysing method. An ALPM which can be used as actuators of servo systems is designed and constructed. The stator of the ALPM has a permanent magnet and 4 pole exciters in order to provide a detent and thrust force. It's rotor radius is 70 mm and average torque of 60 $N{\cdot}cm$. The test results of the prototype ALPM have reasonably good agreement with those of analytic solutions.

  • Roadside pollution has been identified as the main cause of PM2.5 in urban areas. Green infrastructure has been understood to mitigate air pollution from roadside traffic effectively, but complication depend on environmental variables. This study aimed to investigate the characteristic of PM2.5 by the type of space in an urban park located in Songsanghyeon Plaza, surrounded by a 12-lane road on all sides. Type of space was typically classified as roadside square (A), sunken square (B), a mix of trees and hedges/shrubs (C), trees only (D), and grass square (E) according to the land-use type and layers of trees. PM2.5 was measured for nine days, three days for three different Air Quality Forecasts-Good level (0~15㎍/m3), Moderate level (16~35㎍/m3), and Unhealthy level (36~75㎍/m3). The analysis result was as follows. At good levels, there was statistical significance in the order of D, E < B, C < A. In the case of moderate levels and unhealthy levels, D and E were statistically lower than other land-use types. The characteristic of PM2.5 in the urban park by type of space was affected by atmospheric flow into the road. The relatively high concentration of A and C was located near the roads. Although B was far away from the road, the reason for the high concentration of PM2.5 was that no structures blocked the air pollution. Thanks to the type of space C, filtering the air pollution from the roads, the concentration of PM2.5 in D and E was relatively low.

  • Second-order rate constants have been determined spectrophotometrically for reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl 2- thiophenecarboxylate (2) with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % DMSO at 25.0 ${\pm}$ 0.1 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Brønsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature, i.e., the slope decreases from 0.74 to 0.34 as the amine basicity increases. The $pK_a$ at the center of the Brønsted curvature, defined as $pK_a^o$, has been determined to be 9.1. Comparison of the Brønsted-type plot for the reactions of 2 with that for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl 2-furoate (1) suggests that reactions of 1 and 2 proceed through a common mechanism, although 2 is less reactive than 1. The curved Brønsted-type plot has been interpreted as a change in RDS of a stepwise mechanism. The replacement of the O atom in the furoyl ring by an S atom (1 $\rightarrow$ 2) does not alter the reaction mechanism but causes a decrease in reactivity. Dissection of the apparent second-order rate constants into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio is not influenced upon changing the nonleaving group from furoyl to thiophenecarbonyl. However, $k_1$ has been calculated to be smaller for the reactions of 2 than for the corresponding reactions of 1, indicating that the C=O bond in the thiophenecarboxylate 2 is less electrophilic than that in the furoate 1. The smaller k1 for the reactions of 2 is fully responsible for the fact that 2 is less reactive than 1.

  • To investigate the role of vitamin E in protection against lipid per-oxide formation and to monitor the changes in the status of vitamin E. A and reduced glutathione(GSH) in fish oil feeding male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. Control group was fed soybean oil and fish oil groups(FO, FI, FII) fed menhaden oil and soybean oil(9:1) mixture at the level of 10% (w/w) respectively. Dietary vitamin E levels were 30 T, E for control and FI, 2 T.E. for FO and 140 T. E for FII Feeding periods were 4, 8, and 16 weeks. Throughout all periods plasma vitamin E levels(either per ml or per mg lipid) of FO group were extremely low and liver and adipose tissue vitamin E levels were also the lowest among four groups, Plasma vitamin E levels per ml were lower in FI and FII than control but per mg lipid were in the order of FII>FI$\geq$control but vitamin E level per mg lipid did not differ in liver and adipose tissue. As feeding prolonged vitamin E levels in plasma and other tissue were decreased in FO but increased in the other groups. Plsama and liver thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance(TBARS) values were elevated in FO. but increased in the other groups. Plasma and liver thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance(TBARS) values were elevated in FO. While plasma TBARS values as per ml plasma were similar or lower in FI and FII as compared to control plasma TBARS values as per mg lipd and liver TBARS values were in the order of $FI\geqFII>control.$ Plasma and liver vitamin A blood GSH but not liver GSH appeared to be in the order of FII control>FI>FO and this was most significant in 8 weeks. This results suggests that both type of dietary oil and levels of vitamin E affect not only lipid peroxidation but also the status of other physiological antioxidants which have the potential to spare the role of vitamin E.

  • 54 clinical isolates of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans showed distinct hybrdization patern(DAN fingerprinting patterns) when the bacterial DNA were hybridized with randomly cloned 4.7 - kb DNA probe. The frequency of the genotypic distribution demonstrated that type C was the most prevalent genotype, the next being D, NT, A, B, and E in the descending order. The most prevalent serotype was serotype c, the next being a, nd, and b in the descending order. It was noted that the one serotype can represent more than two different genotypes and that multiple genotypic variants can also exist in the periodontal pockets within the sam subject.

  • The setting of the factory under this study is as the following. There are multiple assembly lines. Each line can handle any of given set of products. Furthermore each line is capable of assembling several products concurrently, i.e. mixed model assembly line. An incoming production order is characterized by its due-date, product type and quantity. Under this setting we first have to select the starting time and the place(assembly line) for an order to be processed. We also have to devise a way to control orders to be manufactured as scheduled. Finally there should be a mean to reschedule orders when something unexpected happens. This paper offers a scheme that provides the above mentioned necessities. It also provides a case where the scheme is applied.
