  • Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using hysteretic damper is shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. A mechanical model is determined that can effectively portray the behavior of a typical E-shape device. Comparison with experimental results for a hysteretic damper indicates that the model is accurate over a wide range of operating conditions and adequate for analysis. The seismic performance of hysteretic dampers are studied and compared with the conventional systems as a base isolation system. A five-story building is modeled and the seismic performance of the systems subjected to three different earthquake is compared. The results show that the hysteretic damper system can provide superior protection than the other systems for a wide range of ground motions.

  • The determination of the shape and rising velocity of gas bubbles in a liquid pool is of great importance in analyzing the radioactive aerosol emissions from nuclear power plant accidents in terms of the fission product release rate and the pool scrubbing efficiency of radioactive aerosols. This article suggests a simple parameterization for the gas bubble rising velocity as a function of the volume-equivalent bubble diameter; this parameterization does not require prior knowledge of bubble shape. This is more convenient than previously suggested parameterizations because it is given as a single explicit formula. It is also shown that a bubble shape diagram, which is very similar to the Grace's diagram, can be easily generated using the parameterization suggested in this article. Furthermore, the boundaries among the three bubble shape regimes in the $E_o-R_e$ plane and the condition for the bypass of the spheroidal regime can be delineated directly from the parameterization formula. Therefore, the parameterization suggested in this article appears to be useful not only in easily determining the bubble rising velocity (e.g., in postulated severe accident analysis codes) but also in understanding the trend of bubble shape change due to bubble growth.

  • Regardless of continuous researches, recent researches on the genus Eucampia (Bacillariophyceae) have focused mainly on E. zodiacus f. zodiacus In the present study, species of the genus Eucampia have been studied based on their morphological characteristics. Eucampia species were collected at 24 sites from July 2008 to June 2011 in Korean coastal waters. Species were mainly identified based on the shape of valve, ocellus, and aperture, along with the length and shape of the bipolar elevations. As a result, five Eucampia species were identified: Eucampia cornuta, E. groenlandica, E. zodiacus f. zodiacus, E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis, and E. zodiacus var. cornigera. E. cornuta and E. groenlandica have long pervalvar axis length, but the others display short or moderate length. Ocellus shape of E. cornuta, E. groenlandica and E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis are linear ribs, whereas E. zodiacus f. zodiacus and E. zodiacus var. cornigera have radial ribs with central area. E. cornuta and E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis have long and narrow cylindrical elevations. E. groenlandica and E. zodiacus f. zodiacus have short and broad elevations with blunt tips. E. zodiacus var. cornigera has long and broad conical elevations. In terms of aperture shape, E. cornuta has large elliptical form, E. groenlandica has almost circular to rounded rectangular form, E. zodiacus f. zodiacus has narrow and elliptical rounded rectangular to a narrow lanceolate form, E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis has almost rectangular form, and E. zodiacus var. cornigera has rounded rhombic form. On the basis of elevations in broad girdle view, 5 Eucampia taxa could be divided into 3 types: 'narrow H type', E. cornuta and E. groenlandica; 'regular H type', E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis and E. zodiacus var. cornigera (partial); 'wide H type', E. zodiacus f. zodiacus (almost).

  • 최근 교량의 건설에 있어서 내진설계가 주요문제로 부각되면서, 구조물의 진동응답을 제어 하는 갖가지 형태의 진동제어 기법이 적용되고 있다. LRB(Lead Rebbe.

  • Because of power consumption increase, global warming, and limitation of installation, not only high reliability and interruption capability but also compact and light power apparatuses are needed. In this paper, E field calculation and experiment were processed to identify the influence of the shape of end shield and gap distance. It is expected that the results of FEM simulation and experiments could be the basic data to develop VI. the results of FEM simulation and experiments are as following. Firstly, maximum E fields were compared by means of finite element method as a function of the shape of end shield. 3 types of models were used to analyze maximum E field of each model and the influence of shape of shield could be identified. As a result, proposed L type shield could reduce the maximum E field by 20%. Secondly, the influence of the gap distance between end shields on E field was analyzed. As the gap distance become short the gap distance between inner walls of ceramic also become short. And the maximum E field concentrated on inner wall of ceramic finally increased. Thirdly, the experiment was conducted by fabricating each prototype. As a result, no creepage occurred in shieldless model. In other words, creepage occurred in the shield-installed models. And creepage inception voltages were different from each other because of the difference of maximum E field. Fourthly, The equation that shows relation between calculated E field and measured creepage inception voltage was proposed as a result of FEM analysis and experiment. It is concluded that when designing VI this equation could be important data to reduce time and cost by identifying indirectly the optimal gap distance and the shape of shield required to prevent creepage.

  • Buckling is a significant behavior to be considered whenever we design steel structures. In the case of H-shape beams, the lateral buckling occured by bending moment must be considered. Because of the lateral buckling of H-shape beams, the bending strength of the beams are determined by the lateral buckling stress instead of the allowable bending stress. Lateral buckling stress equation, consisting of two terms, i. e. ${\sigma}_{cr}({\nu},{\omega})={\sqrt{[{\sigma}_{cr}({\nu})]^2+[{\sigma}_{cr}({\omega})]^2}}$ has been using, but for the practical purpose of use the following equations are using two, i. e. ${\sigma}_{cr}({\nu})={\frac{0.65E}{{\ell}_h/A_f}}$, ${\sigma}_{cr}({\omega})={\frac{{\pi}^2E}{({\ell}_b/i_b)^2}}$. When we use the above equations, the results are different according to the shape of beam section, and they a re rather complex. In this study lateral buckling stress equation is derived, and the proposed formula$({\sigma}_{cr}(t))$ is compared with above mentioned two basic and practical equations. To verify the proposed formula experimentaly, 16H-shape beams which have different slender ratios arc tested by applying pure bending momet. Through the experiments the buckling behavior of H-shape beams is clarified, and the results shows that the proposed formula$({\sigma}_{cr}(t))$ is accurate enough for practical purpose.

  • This paper presents a method witch tan improve the dielectric recovery characteristics of UHV class gas circuit breakers by changing the nozzle shape. To calculate the dielectric recovery voltage between electrodes, the flow field and electric field analysis in a 362kV model interrupter has been performed with the commercial programs, RAMPANT and FLUX2D, respectively. As a result, we found that the nozzle shape affects the characteristics of dielectric recovery between electrodes and obtained great improvement of it by the changing the downstream nozzle shape.

  • The structural stress and fatigue behavior of tensile specimen containing internal shrinkage defect were modeled. Real shrinkage defect in casting was scanned by industrial CT (computed tomography), and subsequently its shape was simplified by ellipsoidal primitives for the structural analysis (S.S.M., shape simplification method). The analysis results were compared with the results by real shrinkage shape without any simplification process. It was possible to consider real shrinkage of casting in stress analysis and the method to predict fatigue life of casting with defect was proposed.

  • This study concerns with morphing structures, e.g. as applied in the aerospace industry. A morphing aerofoil structure capable of variable geometry was developed, which was shown to be able to cater for the different aerodynamic requirements at different stages of flight. In this work, the useful and relatively simple method has been applied, which provides a direct method for calculating required morphing shape displacements via finding the most effective bar through calculating bar sensitivity to displacement and calculating set of length actuations for bar assembly to control/adjust shape imperfection of prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements ("macro-elements", e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation. The technique has been verified by experiments on the physical model of an aerofoil shaped morphing pantographic structure. Overall, experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, the technique of multi-iteration adjustment was presented that effective in eliminating errors that occur in the practical adjustment process itself. It has been demonstrated by the experiments on the physical model of pantographic morphing structure. Finally, the study discusses identification of the most effective bars with the objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation.

  • A model of plastic deformation of the shape memory alloys which describes dislocation slip at the microlevel is developed. A condition similar to the Schmid law was adopted for the determination of dislocation slip onset. A description of the interaction of plastic deformation and martensitic transformations by taking into account the densities of deformation defects is proposed. It is shown that the model can correctly describe the effect of plastic strain on the shape memory effect. The proposed model is also capable of describing the two-way shape memory effect.
