  • Fuzzy mathematics is used to elicit and evaluate human psychophysical responses in panel tests. The fundamental instrument used is a bar graph whose data is then converted to a paired comparison matrix. Form this matrix we use the theory of Perron and Froebenius to obtain an eigenvalue and eigenvector which indicates not only the panelist's comparitive responses but also the consistency of the responses from that panelist. Tests were done to evaluate the procedure.

  • In this paper, we propose the AWLS/MFT (Adaptive Weighed Least Squares/ Modulation Function Technique) devised by A. E. Pearson et al. for the transfer function estimation of a modal system and investigate the performance of several algorithms, the Gram matrix method, a Luenberger Observer (LO), Least Squares (LS), and Recursive Least Squares (RLS), for the estimation of initial conditions. With the benefit of the Modulation Function Technique (MFT), we can separate the estimation problem into two phases: the transfer function parameters are estimated in the first phase, and the initial conditions are estimated in the second phase. The LO method produces excellent IC estimates in the noise free case, but the other three methods show better performance in the noisy case. Finally, we compared our result with the Prony based method. In the noisy case, the AWLS and one of the three methods - Gram matrix, LS, and RLS- show better performance in the output Signal to Error Ratio (SER) aspect than the Prony based method under the same simulation conditions.

  • New inclusion sets are obtained for the eigenvalues of real matrices for which the all 1's vector is an eigenvector, i.e., the constant row-sum real matrices. A number of examples are provided. This paper builds upon the work of the authors in [7]. The results of this paper are in terms of $Ger{\check{s}}gorin$ discs of the second type. An application of the main theorem to bounding the algebraic connectivity of connected simple graphs is obtained.

Micro-mechanical modeling for compressive behavior of concrete material

  • This paper presents the micro-mechanical modeling for predicting concrete behavior under compressive loading. The model is able to represent the heterogeneities in the microstructure up to three phases, i.e., aggregate particles, matrix and interfaces. The smeared crack concept based on non-linear fracture mechanics is implemented in order to formulate the constitutive relation for each component. The splitting tensile strength is considered as a fracture criterion for cracking in micro-level. The finite element method is employed to simulate the model based on plane stress condition by using quadratic triangular elements. The validation of the model is verified by comparing with the experimental results. The influence of tensile strength from both aggregate and matrix phases on the concrete compressive strength is demonstrated. In addition, a guideline on selecting appropriate tensile strength for each phase to obtain specified concrete compressive strength is also presented.

  • We demonstrate 4-in QVGA active-matrix electrophoretic display based on ink-jet printed organic transistors on glass substrates. Our TFT array had a bottom-gate, bottom-contact device architecture. The organic semiconductor and gate dielectric were solution processed. The field-effect mobility of the printed devices, calculated in the saturation region, was $0.1{\sim}0.3cm^2/Vs$ at Vg=-20 V.

Suftla Flexible Active-Matrix Electrophoretic Displays

  • We have developed the world's thinnest flexible electrophoretic displays (EPDs). The thin-film displays are 95 ..m thick, which is nearly the same thickness as a standard sheet of paper. Weighing 0.44g including external connection cables, these displays are also probably the world's lightest. We have also developed 7.1-inch-diagonal(paperback-sized) high-resolution flexible EPDs. The displays are large enough to be used as practical e-paper. More than 7 million transistors work correctly on plastic, enabling us to see 3-megapixel images. These flexible displays include active-matrix TFT devices that are fabricated using Suftla transfer technology. Suftla technology demonstrates the potential to achieve thin, flexible displays that will be used as an e-paper in the near future.

  • An efficient adaptive nonlinear compensator, based on a wavelet transform domain adaptive Volterra filter along with a modified escalator algorithm, is proposed to speed up the convergence rate of an adaptive LMS algorithm. In particular, it is well known that the e.g., slow convergence speed of an adaptive LMS algorithm depends on the statistical characteristics (e.g., large eigenvalue spread) of the corresponding auto-correlation matrix of the input vector.   • In this paper, we consider multi-degree reduction of $B{\acute{e}}zier$ curves with continuity of any (r, s) order with respect to $L_2$ norm. With help of matrix theory about generalized inverses we can use Lagrange multipliers to obtain the degree reduction matrix in a very simple form as well as the degree reduced control points. Also error analysis comparing with the least squares degree reduction without constraints is given. The advantage of our method is that the relationship between the optimal multi-degree reductions with and without constraints of continuity can be derived explicitly.

  • Chen and Chen(FSS, 1993, 159-168) presented a reasonable analytical model of fuzzy closed-loop systems and proposed a method to analyze the stability of fuzzy control by the relational matrix of fuzzy system. Chen, Lu and Chen(IEEE Trans. Syst. Man Cybern., 1995, 881-888) formulated the sufficient and necessary conditions on stability of fuzzy closed-loop control systems. Gang and Chen(FSS, 1996, 27-34) deduced a linguistic relation model of a fuzzy closed loop control system from the linguistic models of the fuzzy controller and the controlled process and discussed the linguistic stability of fuzzy closed loop system by a linguistic relation matrix. In this paper, we study more on their models. Indeed, we prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium state $X_e$ in which fuzzy system is stable and give closed form of $X_e$. The same examples in Chen and Chen and Gang and Chen are treated to analyze the stability of fuzzy control systems.

Robust Fuzzy Feedback Linearization Control Based on Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Models

  • In this paper, well-known Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is used as the nonlinear plant model and uncertainty is assumed to be included in the model structure with known bounds. Based on the fuzzy models, a numerical robust stability analysis for the fuzzy feedback linearization regulator is presented using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) Theory. For these structured uncertainty, the closed system can be cast into Lur'e system by simple transformation. From the LMI stability condition for Lur'e system, we can derive the robust stability condition for the fuzzy feedback linearization regulator based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis is illustrated by a simple example.
