  • E-Catalogs which describe products or services are one of the most important data for the electronic commerce. E-Catalogs are created, updated, and removed in order to keep up-to-date information in e-Catalog database. However, when the number of catalogs increases, information integrity is violated by the several reasons like catalog duplication and abnormal classification. Catalog search, duplication checking, and automatic classification are important functions to utilize e-Catalogs and keep the integrity of e-Catalog database. To implement these functions, probabilistic models that use statistics of index words extracted from e-Catalogs had been suggested and the feasibility of the methods had been shown in several papers. However, even though these functions are used together in the e-Catalog management system, there has not been enough consideration about how to share common data used for each function and how to effectively manage statistics of index words. In this paper, we suggest a method to implement these three functions by using simple SQL supported by relational database management system. In addition, we use materialized views to reduce the load for implementing an application that manages statistics of index words. This brings the efficiency of managing statistics of index words by putting database management systems optimize statistics updating. We showed that our method is feasible to implement three functions and effective to manage statistics of index words with empirical evaluation.

  • Electronic catalog contains ich semantics associated with products, and serves as a challenging practical domain for ontology application. Ontology is concerned with the nature and relations of being. It can play a crucial role in e-commerce as a formalization of e-Catalogs. Description Logics provide a theoretical core for most of the current ontology languages. In this paper, we present an ontological model of e-Catalogs in DL. We take an Extended Entity Relationship approach for conceptual modeling method, and present the fundamental set of modeling constructs and corresponding description language representation for each construct. Additional semantic knowledge can be represented directly in DL. Our modeling language stands within SHIQ(d) which is known reasonably practical with regard to its expressiveness and complexity. We illustrate sample scenarios to show how our approach may be utilized in modeling e-Catalogs, and also implement the scenarios through a DL inference tool to see the practical feasibility.

  • As the electronic market grows, the vendors establish internet shopping mall with a plenty of electronic catalogs and prepare to respond rapid electronic market growth. Consequently, building attractable electronic catalogs is very important to give a customer satisfaction. Based on prior researches, this study suggest a research model to understand the factors of electronic catalogs and their impact on the customer's relationship quality. As a result, this study confirmed that accuracy, timeless, interaction, presentation, and information structure of electronic catalog were important factors. And their impact on the customer satisfaction and trust were proved to be substantial. These results will contribute to provide implicit guidelines to the developers of internet shopping malls.

  • The population of consumers who purchase goods through electronic commerce(EC) is increasing due In the advance of Internet. They can purchase goods freely without time and space restriction and can have variety of choices of goods. Now most of e-Catalogs rely on the simple texts or images to present information on goods. As such, there is limitation in describing goods in detail, which might not make consumers interested in those goods. To solve the problem, more advanced e-Catalogs are demanded compared with the existing ones, requiring research on the e-Catalog authoring techniques that utilize dynamic multimedia data such as audios or videos in addition to the conventional texts and images. In this paper, we describe development of an e-Catalog authoring tnol that is based on SMIL(Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) which is one of XML applications.

  • A clearly defined e-catalog (or product) information is a key foundation for an e-commerce system. A classification (or categorization) is a core information to build clear e-catalogs, can play an important role in quality of e-commerce systems using e-catalogs. However, as the wide use of online business transactions, the volume of e-catalog information that needs to be managed in a system has become drastically large, and the classification task of such data has become highly complex. In this paper, we present an e-catalog classifier system, and report on our effort to improve an e-catalog management process and to standardize e-catalogs for enterprises by use of automated approach for e-catalog classifier systems. Also we introduce some of the issues that we have experienced in the projects, so that our work may help those who do a similar project in the future.

  • Electronic catalog is a kind of electronic document to exchange product and service data for B2B or B2C EC(electronic commerce). Up to date a lot of selution/service providers which develop EC systems such as shopping malls, have constructed electronic catalogs. However, they use different contents, formats, and exchange methods without a standardized concept and consistent definition of components. This causes problems that time and cost to develop catalogs are duplicated and data exchange across e-marketplaces is difficult. In order to resolve these problems, standardization works for electronic catalog are carried out inside and outside the country. In this paper, we introduce types of standards concerned with electronic catalog, trends of standardization activities, and domestic standardization activities by industry such as electronics, automobile, shipbuilding, heavy industry, steel, electricity, construction, distribution, biomedical, and textile.

  • The aims of automation efforts in libraries are the rationalization of interval work and improvement of user services. After a period of exclusive internal computer utilization, later voluntary contact with the computer (e.g., circulation control with self services), patrons of American libraries now have to go to a computer terminal if they want certain information. Online public access catalogs(OPAC) have been used in American libraries since the end of the seventies. But OP AC are accepted by patron only if they have a useful and flexible user interface. This paper briefly describes the use of online catalogs in different type of libraries, categories of user (user, non-user), aspect of catalog use in context with computer experience etc. The disscussion then focuses on the characteristics of the final report of online catalog use study of Council on Library Resources and user problems in searching, as reported in many other catalog use studies.

  • E-Catalogs are often duplicated in multiple database systems due to various reasons. This causes the problem of assuring ACID properties of global transactions in multi-database management systems. We suggest a log-based synchronization mechanism for a special situation that catalogs can be changed only in one system and the changes spread to other systems. We have defined several conditions that have to be satisfied to assure the synchronization of the information. We show that the information can be kept identical in a delayed manner if synchronization module fulfills the defined conditions. Finally we show that the suggested mechanism is useful by showing a real world application that uses this synchronization mechanism in e-commerce environment.
