The characteristics of dynamic wheel loads of heavy vehicles running on bridge and rigid surface are investigated by using three-dimensional analytical model. The simulated dynamic wheel loads of vehicles are compared with the experimental results carried out by Road-Vehicles Research Institute of Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to verify the validity of the analytical model. Also another comparison of the analytical result with the experimental one for Umeda Entrance Bridge of Hanshin Expressway in Osaka, Japan, is presented in this study. The agreement between the analytical and experimental results is satisfactory and encouraging the use of the analytical model in practice. Parametric study shows that the dynamic increment factor (DIF) of the bridge and RMS values of dynamic wheel loads are fluctuated according to vehicle speeds and vehicle types as well as roadway roughness conditions. Moreover, there exist strong dominant frequency resemblance between bounce motion of vehicle and bridge response as well as those relations between RMS values of dynamic wheel loads and dynamic increment factor (DIF) of bridges.
The safety evaluations of railway wheelsets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheelset materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheelset for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheelset while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.
The purpose of this study is to examine wheel load variations on the bridge. It had been reported that wheel load variations involved un-sprung mass, sprung mass and train running speed, but there are no examples that measured in the running speed actuality track. In this experiment, Attach measurement sensor to equal distance on the track and measured wheel loads by using a dynamic shear strain technique.

For the improvement of a conventional railway speed, tilting train(Tilting Train express) is under the development aiming for a maximum speed 180km/h. Compared to the existing conventional rolling-stock, tilting train could take an advantage of speed improvement about $20{\sim}30%$ on curve sections due to the improvement of cowing performance. However, this speed increasement creates a severe load at wheels, thus it is necessary to study the safety of wheel for tilting train preferentially. On the other hand, it is under consideration that the wheel for conventional railway rolling-stock at speeds of 150km/h will be applied to tilting train at speeds of 180km/h. In this paper, we have studied the strength of wheel structure, the geometrical contact characteristics, and the dynamic performance of wheel to evaluate the safety of wheel for tilting train.

A Lugged steel wheel was operated with two kinds of travel reduction on a sandy clay. " Small -sized transucers of the three-surfaced lug type " were installed to the wheel for the measurement of normal and tangential forces acting on a trailing lug side, lug face and a leading lug side separately . The external results acting on each surface were calculated from those measured forces. This results proved qualitatively that the relationships between external forces and lug surfaces obtained from mathematical analyses were external forces and lug surfaces obtained from mathematical analyses were correct. The traction, the motion resistance and the dynamic load were changing at the three lug surface under various operating conditions . Therefore, total analyses of three surface were indispensable to discuss the performance of the wheel lug.

An OHT(Over Head Transportation) vehicle is an example of the industrial monorail vehicle, and it is used in the automobile, semiconductor, LCD manufacturing industries. OHT vehicle is moved by main wheels and guide rollers. The major function of the main wheel is to support and drive the OHT vehicle. The roles of the guide roller is the inhibition of derailment and steering of the OHT vehicle. Since the required vehicle velocity becomes faster and the required load capacity is increased, the durability characteristics of the wheel and roller, which was made of urethane, need to be increased. So it is necessary to estimate the fatigue life cycle of the wheel and roller. In this study, OHT dynamic model was developed by using the multi body dynamic analysis program ADAMS. Wheel and roller are modeled by the 3-D surface contact module. Especially, motor cycle tire mechanics is used in the wheel contact model. The OHT dynamic model can analyze the dynamic characteristic of the OHT vehicle with various driving conditions. And the result was verified by a vehicle traveling test. As a result of this study, the developed model is expected to predict wheel dynamic load time history and makes a contribution to design of a new monorail vehicle.

A tilting train, which was developed to run the curve section without reducing the speed and compromising the riding quality, can improve the speed so as to reduce the travel time, compared to the existing trains. Then the force generated by the train operation to the track is in proportion to train operation speed, which means the track shall bear the increased force as much as the increase in train operation speed. Particularly, wheel load and lateral wheel load generated by train operation and distributed to the rail tend to cause the track to suffer the strain and furthermore the severe disaster such as derailment. To deal with such problem and ensure the train will run safety and stably, the tolerance in wheel load change, lateral wheel load and derailment coefficient was determined for quantitative evaluation of the train operation stability. In this study, derailment coefficient of inner and outer rail at existing curve section of tilting train was determined to evaluate the curve radius, possibility of acceleration and the need of rail improvement, which was then compared with the existing traditional train and high speed train. Conducting the quantitative evaluation of dynamic wheel load and lateral wheel load of each train, which was based on field survey, derailment coefficient and static & dynamic wheel load change, which serve the evaluation criteria of train operation stability, were determined for comparison with the standards, thereby analyzing the stability of the tilting train.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of rail corrugation and the track force for concrete track (STEDEF) in the urban transit. From the field measurements, the dynamic wheel load, vertical displacement of sleeper and rail bending stress were measured and it was evaluated by regarding to the rail corrugation. As a result of the study, the causes of rail corrugation was experimentally proved by frequency analysis using measured dynamic wheel load data. The influence of corrugation on dynamic wheel load, rail bending stress and sleeper displacement was evaluated that the periodic irregularities of rail corrugation on the rail surface amplified the dynamic track force such as the dynamic wheel load, and thus the rail bending stress and the vertical displacement of sleeper could be increased by a maximum of 1.7 times.
A trial run of locally-developed tilting train has been in process on Chungbuk line since the test vehicle was first produced. For the system stabilization, interface verification among the systems including track, structure, catenary and signaling system, not to mention the rolling stock, is very crucial. Therefore, in this study, the dynamic rail force of the tilting (Hanvit 200), high-speed (KTX) and general (Mugunghwa) vehicle caused by driving in transition curve track was measured. And, it compared the tilting response with the other by using the measured wheel load data in transition curve track, and then evaluated probability the range of wheel load fluctuation for the variable dynamic vertical and lateral wheel load. As a result, a range of wheel load by occured a change of cant from the high-speed and general vehicle which had fixed bogie structure was distributed throughout small deviation (${\Delta}8{\sim}13kN$). Otherwise, in case of the tilting train which was consisted of the pendulum bogie structure was distributed wide range about large deviation (${\Delta}25{\sim}28kN$) by changed of cant.
The coefficient of derailment and the rate of wheel load reduction were used as the index of train running safety that was directly affected the train derailment safety. In aspects of track, the train running safety depends on the complex interaction between wheel and rail, and the track-vehicle conditions (i.e., the curvature, cant, track system, vehicle speed and the operation conditions, etc). In this study, the relationship between the train running safety and the track curvature and vehicle speed for direct fixation concrete tracks currently employed in Korean light rapid transit was assessed by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along the service lines. The measured dynamic wheel load, lateral wheel load and lateral displacement of rail head were measured for same train running on four tested tracks under real conditions, which included curved and tangent tracks placed on the tunnel and bridge, thus increasing the train speed by approximately maximum design speed of each test site. Therefore, the measured dynamic track response was applied to the running safety analysis in order to evaluate the coefficient of derailment, the rate of wheel load reduction and the track gauge widening at each test site, and compare with the corresponding Korean train running safety standard. As the results, the lateral track response of direct fixation concrete track appeared to increase with the decreased track curvature; therefore, it was inferred that the track curvature directly affected the train running safety.
