  • This paper presents the results of a cooperative research on remote parallel pseudo-dynamic testing on a base-isolated bridge with multiple piers using Internet between KAIST, Korea and Kyoto Univ., Japan. Experimental facilities located at two institutions were parallelly used to test the nonlinear behavior of the base-isolators. Two data communication schemes for parallel tests were developed and the performance is compared. The results indicate that the elapsed time may vary widely depending on the data communication and testing schemes : i.e. 1-25sec for each time step. But it is fairly comparable with the time required for pseudo-dynamic testing. The testing method can become more powerful, as the data communication and monitoring techniques through Internet improve further.

  • The rolling-stocks on conventional line have suffered wheel problems due to the incompatibility between wheel and track condition. Especially, The 1:40 coned wheel profile's wear is very severe and these increase wheel maintenance cost. Thus we designed several arc-type wheel profiles coned 1:/20 to reduce the wheel flange wear and analyzed the dynamic performance of designed profiles. Tests carried out in service line to analyse the dynamic performance and verify the wear reduction for two cases of profiles. Test results shows the equal level of dynamic performance and the improvement of wheel flange wear compared with the conical wheel profile coned 1:40.

  • This paper presents the test results to evaluate the healthiness of the ballast in subway. The test includes the dynamic load test in servicing Line the screen classification test of aggregates and the wear test. From the results, the aspect and the property of the ballast are evaluated. The dynamic load tests explain the relationship between the deterioration of the ballast and the fluctuation of loads. The assessment of impact factor based on the field test results in a good property of test blocks is proposed.

  • Hammer forging was employed for Alloy 718 disk. The change in grain size during hot forging depends very much on dynamic recrystallization. The final grain size depends especially on the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$/TEX> for dynamic recrystallization and Zener-Holloman parameter(Z). In this study, the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$, the strain for 50 pct. recrystallization$($\varepsilon$_{0.5})$ and fraction of dynamic recrystallization(Xdyn) were measured by compression tests. FE simulation was also carried out ot predict the evolution of microstructure. The strain, strain rate and temperature distribution predicted by forging simulation can be effectively used to predict the distribution of grain sizes in the forged workpiece. The present model predictions showed an excellent agreement with the microstructural evolution of hammer-forged Alloy 718 disks.

  • Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concern about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers, which were nonseismically or seismically designed in accordance with the provision of Korea Highway Design Specification. Further experimental investigations have been doing to figure out the retrofitting effects of nonseismic R/C bridge piers confined with glass fiber at the plastic hinge zone. Pseudo-dynamic tests have been carried out in nine scaled R/C column specimens to investigate their hysteretic behavior under earthquake loading. Test parameters are axial load, input ground motion confinement steel ratio, glass fiber and etc.

  • The method based on various mathematical characteristic equations for identifying tensile forces in the cable structure system are used as response data to reflect the properties of the dynamic sensitivity. The vibration tests have been conducted with respect to levels of applied weight for the sagged cable. In this study, a set of natural frequencies are extracted from the measured dynamic data. Next, existing characteristic equation methods based these extracted natural frequencies are applied to identify tensil forces of the sagged cable system. Through several verification procedures, the proposed methods could be applied to a sagged cable system when the initial material data are insufficiency.

  • In this paper, a Petrov-Galerkin natural element method (PG-NEM) based upon the natural neighbor concept is presented for the free vibration and dynamic response analyses of two-dimensional linear elastic structures. A problem domain is discretized with a finite number of nodes and the trial basis functions are defined with the help of the Voronoi diagram. Meanwhile, the test basis functions are supported by Delaunay triangles for the accurate and easy numerical integration with the conventional Gauss quadrature rule. The numerical accuracy and stability of the proposed method are verified through illustrative numerical tests.

  • The dynamic model of a tractor-trailer system developed in the first part of this paper was verified in this article by comparing the simulated acceleration responses of the system with actually measured ones. A commercially available tractor and a trailer were used for the verification test. Values of the model parameters were measured or theoretically derived if the measurement was practically impossible. The tractor-trailer system was operated with different forward speeds over three equally spaced half-sine bumps on the flat concrete surface. Results of the verification tests showed that autospectra of the measured and simulated accelerations of the tractor-trailer system agreed well up to the frequencies slightly feater than the fundamental frequencies of the ground excitations and at the frequencies of engine excitations. The mean of normalized errors of the simulated responses to the measured ones was estimated to be less than 10% for all the test runs. The peak responses in the autospectra also coincided well both in the frequency and magnitude.

  • Static and dynamic crushing behaviors of composite box tube show the difference with those of metal tube. This paper investigates the characteristics of static and dynamic crushing test which were conducted to characterize the energy absorption and collapse mode of composite box tubes. Sixteen kinds of tube specimens were fabricated from[0/90] woven Glass/Epoxy fabric and autoclave cured. Axial crushing tests were performed using Instron and Dynatup Impact Tester. It is shown that collapse mode and energy absorption capacity can vary according to the aspect ratio, length, loading rate, lay-up direction of fabric, and trigger geometry of the composite box tube.

  • In this paper, a blackbox approach is carried out to model the nonlinear dynamic bushing model. One-axis durability test is performed to describe the mechanical behavior of typical vehicle elastomeric components. The results of the tests are used to develop an empirical bushing model with an artificial neural network. The back propagation algorithm is used to obtain the weighting factor of the neural network. Since the output for a dynamic system depends on the histories of inputs and outputs, Narendra's algorithm of ‘NARMAX’ form is employed in the neural network bushing module. A numerical example is carried out to verify the developed bushing model.
