  • This study was carried out to investigate the causes of fish kills in the Yudeung Stream in Daejeon, Korea using literature reviews, governmental and our water quality monitoring data of the study site, rainfall data, intensive water quality monitoring during rainfall events, sediment pollutant contents and laboratory bioassay tests. Fish kill in urban streams can be caused by combined effect of reduction in dissolved oxygen concentration, increase in toxic material or increase in turbidity in waterbody due to introduction of surface runoff or effluent of combined sewer overflows after rainfall from the watershed areas. Despite of extensive and intensive field surveys and laboratory tests, it was found that those conventional methods have limitations to identify causes of fish kills in urban streams. It would be necessary to use dynamic water quality modeling to predetermine the range and level of water pollution in the stream and automatic water quality monitoring system that can collect water samples and detect water quality continuously.

  • This paper describes the mathematical modeling, control algorithm, system design, hardware implementation and experimental test of a Manta-type Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (MUUV). The vehicle has one thruster for longitudinal propulsion, one rudder for heading angle control and two elevators for depth control. It is equipped with a pressure sensor for measuring water depth and Doppler Velocity Log for measuring position and angle. The vehicle is controlled by an on-board PC, which runs with the Windows XP operating system. The dynamic model of 6DOF is derived including the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle, while the hydrodynamic coefficients related to the forces and moments are obtained from experiments or estimated numerically. We also utilized the values obtained from PMM (Planar Motion Mechanism) tests found in the previous publications for numerical simulations. Various controllers such as PID, Sliding mode, Fuzzy and $H{\infty}$ are designed for depth and heading angle control in order to compare the performance of each controller based on simulation. In addition, experimental tests are carried out in a towing tank for depth keeping and heading angle tracking.

  • As the complexity of the power system becomes higher, tests of the new devices, such as exciter and PCS(Power Conversion System) of the distributed generation sources, in the real operating condition are more important. However tests of the unverified devices in the real power system may cause hazardous malfunction of the system. In order to avoid this problem, power devices may be tested with the real-time simulators instead of the real power system. This paper presents an real-time multi machine power system simulator using PCs(Personal Computer) and Fast Ethernet. Developed real-time simulator performs the electro-mechanical dynamic simulation of multi-machine power system by the network distributed computing technique. Because the simulator consists of usual PCs and Fast Ethernet, it is possible to make up a simulation system very cheaper than the conventional real-time simulator which consists of dedicated expensive hardware devices. The performance of the developed simulator is tested and verified with the scaled model excitation system. The test which adjust the control parameters of the exciter is performed with the well-known New England 10 generator 39 bus sample power system.

  • Coupling systems under train's collision should take the impact by absorbing the impact energy caused from the collision, so the systems are very important parts for the safety of the trains. However, it is not easy to evaluate the performance of the system because it requires a huge testing facility, which is able to control the impact and to handle many safety issues. In this paper, test results are provided, which are obtained from collision tests of a single train having a coupling system in the front, and the results are analyzed in order to understand the characteristics and the dynamic behaviors of energy absorbing materials in the coupling system, such as a hydraulic buffer, and two rubber buffers. The results show that the force of each component could be empirically described by the compression displacement and velocity. The analyzed results will be applied to simulation models, and advanced studies wouuld be available if the simulation models are well validated with the test results.

  • Cancer treatment has been stratified by companion biomarker tests that serve to provide information on the genetic status of cancer patients and to identify patients who can be expected to respond to a given treatment. This stratification guarantees better efficiency and safety during treatment. Cancer patients, however, marginally benefit from the current companion biomarker-aided treatment regimens, presumably because companion biomarker tests are dependent solely on the mutation status of several genes status quo. In the true sense of the term, "personalized medicine", cancer patients are deemed to be identified individually by their molecular signatures, which are not necessarily confined to genetic mutations. Glycosylation is tremendously dynamic and shows alterations in cancer. Evidence is accumulating that aberrant glycosylation contributes to the development and progression of cancer, holding the promise for use of glycosylation status as a companion biomarker in cancer treatment. There are, however, several challenges derived from the lack of a reliable detection system for aberrant glycosylation, and a limited library of aberrant glycosylation. The challenges should be addressed if glycosylation status is to be used as a companion biomarker in cancer treatment and contribute to the fulfillment of personalized medicine.

  • A drop weight type impact test system is designed and set up to experimentally investigate impact responses of composite laminates subjected to the low-velocity impact. Using the test system, the impact velocity and the rebound velocity of the impactor as well as the impact force history are measured. An error of the measured data due to a difference in measuring position of the sensor is corrected and, for the estimation of real contact force history, a method of correcting an error due to friction forces is developed. Experimental methods to fix the boundary edgy of laminate specimens in impact testing are investigated and the impact tests on the specimens fixed by those methods are performed. Impact force histories and dynamic strains measured from the tests are compared with numerical results from the finite element analysis using the contact law. Consequently, the nonlinear numerical results considering the large deflection effects are agreed with the experimental results better than the linear ones.

  • The acceptance test of KTX has been performed in Korea. During the test, lateral vibration of carbody over the accepted value called swat was found. KTX has 20 car trainsed formation whose trailer cars are linked by articulate bogies. So this study is performed to see the effects of long trainsed formation on vehicle dynamics and the train stability by 20 car vehicle model. Firstly the reliable vehicle model which shows well the tendencies appeared in the tests on the high speed test line is required to find the cause of lateral vibration and the countermeasure. Vehicle model was made for the analysis with VAMPIRE. The analysis results show that secondary air spring lateral stiffness is the most significant parameter to cause carbody lateral vibration. Mode analysis results show that he least damped mode shape is similar to the vibration pattern shown in the tests that the amplitude of the motion increases along the train set and decreases in the tail part. For the case of short train formation with 7 or 10cars, sway does not happen. But in the case of longer train formation with 16 or 20 cars, sway was found.

  • A nanosatellite designed by the Korea Microgravity Science Laboratory (KMSL) is currently under development. The KMSL nanosatellite is designed to perform two different scientific missions in space. To successfully complete missions, a variety of tests must be conducted to verify the performance of the designed satellite before launch. As part of the qualification test campaign, the KMSL nanosatellite underwent high level vibrational tests (to comply with Falcon 9 qualification level) to demonstrate the integrity of the system. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the primary structure and all electronic and mechanical components can withstand the vibrations and the loads experienced during the launch period. To this end, the KMSL nanosatellite was exposed to static and dynamic loads and various types of vibrations that are inevitably produced during the space vehicle launch period. The vibration test results clearly demonstrated that all avionics and mechanical components can withstand the vibrations and the loads applied to the KMSL nanosatellite's body through a Pico-satellite Orbital Deployer (POD).

  • The galvanostatic tests for corrosion protection are conducted at various applied current densities during 93,600 sec, and evaluated in terms of the variations in current density with time and in the potential at the applied current density. In addition, the corrosion damage depth is analyzed with 3D analysis optical microscope after galvanostatic tests. In this study, it was investigated to decide condition of the corrosion protection gavalnostatic method for Cu-Al alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance. In the galvanostatic test under the cavitation environment, the energy was reflected or cancelled out by the collision with the oxygen gas generated by the oxygen reduction action. The surface observation showed neither the cavitation damage nor the electrochemical damage in the current density over 0.01 $A/cm^2$ in the dynamic state under the cavitation environment.
