Improvement of waste landfill by dynamic compaction method (동다짐공법에 의한 쓰레기매립지반의 개량특성 분석)

  • Dynamic compaction is an efficient ground improvement technique for loose soils and waste landfill. The improvement is obtained by controlled high energy tamping and its effects vary with the soil properties and energy input. This study demonstrated the application of dynamic compaction method for the improvement of waste landfill in construction site. Various tests and measurements such as standard penetration test, bore hole loading test, crater settlement, ground settlement, pore water pressure were peformed during dynamic compaction field test. From the field test results, the efficiency of dynamic compaction method for the improvement of waste landfill was proved.

Construction stage effect on the dynamic characteristics of RC frame using operational modal analysis

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of RC frame is determined for different construction stages using Operational Modal Analyses method under ambient vibration. Full scaled, one bay and one story RC frames are selected as an application for different construction stages such as plane, brick in-filled and brick in-filled with plaster. The RC frame is vibrated by natural excitations with small impact effects and the response signals are measured using sensitive accelerometers during ambient vibration tests. Measurement time-frequency span and effective mode number are determined by considering similar studies in literature. Sensitive seismic accelerometers are used to collect signals obtained from the experimental tests. To obtain experimental dynamic characteristics, output-only system identification technique is employed namely; Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique in the frequency domain. It is demonstrated that the ambient vibration measurements are enough to identify the most significant modes of RC frames.

  • In this paper, we fabricate arrayed-type flexible capacitive touch sensor using liquid metal (LM) droplets (4 mm spatial resolution). Poly-4-vinylphenol (PVP) layer is used as a dielectric layer on the electrode patterned Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) film. Bonding tests between hydroxyl group (-OH) on the PVP film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are conducted in a various $O_2$ plasma treatment conditions. Through the tests, we can confirm that non-$O_2$ plasma treated PVP layer and $O_2$ plasma treated PDMS can make a chemical bond. To measure dynamic range of the device, one-cell experiments are conducted and we confirmed that the fabricated device has a large dynamic range (~60 pF).

  • A study has been performed to investigate on the dynamic behavior of bridges crossed by the KTX(Korea Train eXpress). The investigated bridge is a 2-span continuous concrete box bridge with spans of 40m length named Yeon-Jae bridge. We have performed many field tests on the dynamic behaviors of a real bridge for KTX using various sensors. For this study, various sensors have been installed on the Yeon-Jae bridge located in the experimental section of the KHSR(Korea High-Speed Railway) track and tests have been performed. Through this study, it is known that effects of local modes and sleepers in the box-girder bridge for the KTX on the dynamic responses is remarkable. Therefore, in the investigation on the accelerations of the box-girder bridge, three dimensional model should be adopted in numerical analysis including the effects of sleepers. The effect of temperature on the accelerations of the bridge should be investigated in the further studies to determine the reason of excessive acceleration.

  • In this study, the variations of transformed impact factors and load carrying capacity of highway bridges measured from the state of expansion joint are evaluated. the field loading tests were performed on the highway bridge with damaged expansion joint to investigate the variation of the load carrying capacity. From the field loading tests in case that damaged expansion joint exist or do not exist, the static displacements and dynamic displacements were measured, and TIF were calculated, respectively. dynamic test is performed in order to estimate dynamic displacement and TIF according to the level of damage of expansion joint. From the results of TIF, the load carrying capacity of highway bridges with damaged expansion joint were estimated.

  • PURPOSES : Evaluation of input parameters determination procedure for dynamic analysis of aggregates in DEM. METHODS : In this research, the aggregate slump test and angularity test were performed as fundamental laboratory tests to determine input parameters of spherical particles in DEM. The heights spreads, weights of the simple tests were measured and used to calibrate rolling and static friction coefficients of particles. RESULTS : The DEM simulations with calibrated parameters showed good agreement with the laboratory test results for given dynamic condition. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the employed calibration method can be applicable to determine rolling friction coefficient of DEM simulation for given dynamic conditions. However, further research is necessary to connect the result to the behavior of aggregate in packing and mixing process and to refine static friction coefficient.

  • The tests in a battery can be performed in different sequences, and different sequential testing strategies will have exactly the same overall performances for that battery, but at different expected total costs and expected time consumptions. By using a multiobjective dynamic programming model, we are able to find all noninferior testing strategies for a given battery of tests and a stopping rule.

  • The shear modulus of 3-bar lap rubber shear dynamic test specimen is investigated through incremented shear strain tests. The shear force-strain relation of rubber specimen is also calculated by ABAQUS using hyper-elastic material properties of high damping rubber. Detailed Investigation on the Dynamic Excess Pore Water Pressure through Liquefaction Tests using Various Dynamic Loadings (다양한 진동하중의 액상화 시험을 통한 동적 과잉간극수압에 대한 상세분석)

  • In most experimental researches on the liquefaction phenomenon, an earthquake as a random vibration has been regraded as a sinusoidal wave or a triangular wave with an equivalent amplitude. Together with the development in the part of signal control and data acquisition, dynamic experimental equipments in the soil dynamics have also developed rapidly and further more, several real earthquakes have been simulated in the large model test such as shaking table tests and centrifuge tests. In Korea, several elementary laboratory tests to simulate the real earthquake load were performed. From these test results, it was reported that the sinusoidal wave cannot reliably reflect the soil dynamic behavior under the real earthquake motion. In this study, 4 types of dynamic motions such as the sinusoidal wave, the triangular wave, the incremental triangular wave and several real earthquake motions which were classified with shock-type and vibration-type were loaded to find something new to explain the change of the excess pore water pressure under the real earthquake load. Through the detailed investigation and comparison on all test results, it is found that the dynamic flow is generated by the soil plastic deformation and the velocity head of dynamic flow is changed the pressure head in the un-drained condition. It can be concluded that the change of the excess pore water pressure is related to the pressure head of dynamic flow. Lastly, a new hypothesis to explain such a liquefaction initiation phenomenon under the real earthquake load is also proposed and verified.

  • In this study, seismic performance tests for 500 kV EBA are conducted through the IEEE Std. 693. It is hard to conduct both the static tests and dynamic tests for 500 kV EBA as IEEE Std. 693 because the size of specimen, 9 m in height, is too large to be examined. To do so, it can cause the unnecessary time and cost, and also the damage on the specimen. However, in this study, both static tests and dynamic tests are conducted in the same test field as IEEE Std. 693 to achieve more accurate and reliable test results. From the test results Taihan Electric Wire Co. can win contract for 500 kV extra-high voltage project in the U.S.A., therefore it can be evaluated that the tests are conducted successfully and the capability to estimate large electric power facilities are achieved as IEEE Std. 693.
