Within the context of continuum mechanics, inelastic behaviours of constitutive responses are usually modelled by using phenomenological approaches. Elasto-plastic damage modelling is extensively used for concrete material in the case of progressive strength and stiffness deterioration. In this paper, a review of the main features of elasto-plastic damage modelling is presented for uniaxial stress-strain relationship. It has been reported in literature that the influence of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) can lead to severe degradations in the modulus of elasticity and compression strength of the concrete material. In order to incorporate the effects of ASR related degradation, in this paper the constitutive model of concrete is based on the coupled damage-plasticity approach where degradation in concrete properties can be captured by adjusting the yield and damage criteria as well as the hardening moduli related parameters within the model. These parameters are adjusted according to results of concrete behaviour from the literature. The effect of ASR on the dynamic behaviour of a beam and a column are illustrated under moving load and cyclic load cases.

Generally, finite element models used in structural analysis have some uncertainties of the geometric dimensions, applied loads and boundary conditions, as well as in material properties due to the manufacturability of aluminum intensive body. Therefore, it is very important to refine or update a finite element model by correlating it with dynamic and static tests. The structural optimization problems of automotive body are considered for mechanical structures with initial stiffness due to preloading and in operation condition or manufacturing. As the mean compliance and deflection under preloading are chosen as the objective function and constraints, their sensitivities must be derived. The optimization problem is iteratively solved by a sequential convex approximation method in the commercial software. The design variables are corrected by the strain energy scale factor in the element levels. This paper presents an updated method based on the sensitivities of structural responses and the residual error vectors between experimental and simulation models.

The non-linear dynamic characteristics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid are investigated when the pipe is clamped at both ends. To consider the geometric non-linearity for the radial and circumferential displacements, this study adopts the Lagrange strain theory for large deformation and the extensible dynamics based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory for slenderness assumption. By using the Hamilton principle, the non-linear partial differential equations are derived for the in-plane motions of the pipe, considering the fluid inertia forces as a kind of non-conservative forces. The linear and non-linear terms in the governing equations are compared with those in the previous study, and some significant differences are discussed. To investigate the dynamic characteristics of the system, the discretized equations of motion are derived form the Galerkin method. The natural frequencies varying with the flow velocity are computed fen the two cases, which one is the linear problem and the other is the linearized problem in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position. Finally, the time responses at various flow velocities are directly computed by using the generalized- method. From these results, we should to describe the non-linear behavior to analyze dynamics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid more precisely.
The structural integrity of a dual-purpose metal cask currently under development by the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) was evaluated, through numerical simulations and a model test, under high-speed missile impact reflecting targeted aircraft crash conditions. The impact conditions were carefully chosen through a survey on accident cases and recommendations from literature. In the impact scenario, a missile flying horizontally hits the top side of the cask, which is freestanding on a concrete pad, with a velocity of 150 m/s. A simplified missile simulating a commercial aircraft engine was designed from an impact loade-time function available in literature. In the analyses, the dynamic behavior of the metal cask and the integrity of the containment boundary were assessed. The simulation results were compared with the test results for a 1:3 scale model. Although the dynamic behavior of the cask in the model test did not match exactly with the prediction from the numerical simulation, other structural responses, such as the acceleration and strain history during the impact, showed very good agreement. Moreover, the containment function of the cask survived the missile impact as expected from the numerical simulation. Thus, the procedure and methodology adopted in the structural numerical analyses were successfully validated.

Many items, as internal pressure, thrust, temperature, strain, etc. are measured in Ground Firing Test (GFT) of rocket motors. But these items are influenced by various phenomena occurred during propellant combustion. In this study, natural frequencies of motor itself and system(motor+loadcell) on Stand were measured. Also motor responses were measured during burning and analyzed so that the vibration characteristics occurred during GFT and the causes and characteristics of vibration signal appearing on thrust curve were identified.
This paper presents the structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge located in Hangzhou, China. The structural health monitoring (SHM) system is designed and implemented for the footbridge to monitor the structural responses of the footbridge and to ensure the structural safety during the period of operation. The monitoring data of stress and displacement measured by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors installed at the critical locations are used to analyze and assess the operation performance of the footbridge. A linear regression method is applied to separate the temperature effect from the stress monitoring data measured by the FBG-based strain sensors. In addition, the static vertical displacement of the footbridge measured by the FBG-based hydrostatic level gauges are presented and compared with the dynamic displacement remotely measured by a machine vision-based measurement system. Based on the examination of the monitored stress and displacement data, the structural safety evaluation is executed in combination with the defined condition index.

In this study, a method to estimate the suspension bridge deflection is developed using mode decomposition technique. In order to examine the suspension bridge stability against these dynamic loadings, the prediction of displacement response is very important to evaluate bridge stability. However, it is recognized that any measurement of movement for suspension bridges may be difficult for the absence of proper methods to measure the displacement response on site. This study aims at suggesting a method to estimate the displacement response from the measured strain signals in an indirect way to predict the displacement response, not a direct way to measure the displacement response. Additionally, by applying the FBG sensors with multi-point measurements not influenced by electric noise, it can be expected that the technique would be applicable to infrastructures.
This paper presents nonlinear oscillations of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the von Kármán nonlinearity. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The frequency response equation and the forced vibration response of the system are obtained. Effects of patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the nonlinear responses of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.

In this study, a numerical analysis method for soil-pile interaction in frequency domain problem is presented. The total soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts so called near field and far field. In the near field, beam elements are used lot a pile and plain strain finite elements for soil. In the far field, dynamic fundamental solution for multi-layered half planes based on boundary element formulation is adopted lot soil. These two fields are coupled using FE-BE coupling technique. In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis, the dynamic responses of pile on multi-layered half planes are simulated and the results are compared with the experimental results. Also, various numerical analyses of piles considering different conditions of soil-pile interaction system are performed to examine the dynamic behavior of the system. It has been found that the developed method which satisfies the radiation conditions of multi-layered half planes can be applied to various structure systems effectively in frequency domain.
