Seismic Design of Mid-to-Low Rise Steel Moment Frames Based on Available Connection Rotation Capacity (접합부 회전능력에 기초한 중/저층 철골모멘트골조의 내진설계)

  • A displacement-based seismic design procedure was proposed for mid-to-low-rise steel moment frames. The proposed method was totally different from the current R-factor approach in that it directly uses available connection rotation capacity as a primary design variable. To this end, the relationship between available connection rotation capacity and seismic response modification (R factor) was established first; this relationship has been a missing link in current ductility-based design practice. A step-by-step displacement-based iterative design procedure was then proposed and verified using inelastic dynamic analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was twofold : first, to reduce as much as possible the shaking moments of the crank-type transplanting mechanism of walking-type rice transplanters, and second, to evaluate whether or not a crank-type transplanting mechanism, if its shaking moment is reduced, can be used in riding-type transplanters for high speed transplanting operations. For these purposes, kinematic and force analyses of the currently available crank-type transplanting mechanisms were made and their results were compared with those observed by experimentation. The degree of shaking moment effect was also estimated Various efforts to minimize the shaking moments led to the development of a crank-type mechanism with a balancing gear, in which an eccentric balancing gear is combined into the driven link axis. Analysis of the developed mechanism showed that about 20% of the shaking energy can be reduced and about 40% of reduction in peak shaking moment can be obtained when comparing with those obtained without the balancing gear. It was concluded that crank-type transplanting mechanisms can be used for high speed operations with a forward speed of 0.9-1.2m/s if the balancing gear is additionally mounted. However, further considerations must be made to solve the space constraints in relation to the structural frame of riding type of rice transplanters.

  • Actuator-induced disturbance is one of the crucial factors of spacecraft attitude pointing and stability in fine attitude control problems. The control moment gyros (CMGs) are known as very attractive actuators from the point of high power and low weight. In order to develop a CMG as an actuator for fine controls, CMG-induced disturbances should be analyzed. Therefore, this paper aims to develop an analytic model and predict the effect of disturbances of CMGs by assuming static and dynamic imbalances. The proposed model is induced by the Lagrangian method on the basis of the small signal assumption.

  • Computational fluid dynamic simulation is performed for the floating turbulent premixed flames stabilized in stagnation flows of Cho et al. [1] and Cheng and Shepherd [2]. They are both in the wrinkled flamelet regime far from the extinction limit with $u'/S^{0}_{L}$ less than unity. The turbulent flux is given in the first moment closure as a sum of the classical gradient flux due to turbulent motions and the countergradient flux due to thermal expansion. The parameter $N_{B}'s$ are greater than unity with the countergradient flux dominant over the gradient flux. The countergradient flux is assumed to be zero in $\bar{c}<0.05$. The flame surface density is modeled as a symmetric parabolic function with respect to $\bar{c}$. The product of the maximum flame surface density and the mean stretch factor is considered as a tuning constant to match the flame location. Good agreement is achieved with the measured $\tilde{w}$ and $\bar{c}$ profiles along the axis in both flames.

Design of a New Haptic Device using a Parallel Mechanism with a Gimbal Mechanism

  • This paper proposes a new haptic device using a parallel mechanism with gimbal type actuators. This device has three legs actuated by 2-DOF gimbal mechanisms, which make the device simple and light by fixing all the actuators to the base. Three extra sensors are placed at passive joints to obtain a unique solution of the forward kinematics problem. The proposed haptic device is developed for an operator to use it on a desktop in due consideration of the size of an average Korean. The proposed haptic device has a small workspace for on operator to use it on a desktop and more sensitivity than a serial type haptic device. Therefore, the motors of the proposed haptic device are fixed at the base plate so that the proposed haptic device has a better dynamic bandwidth due to a low moving inertia. With this conceptual design, optimization of the design parameters is carried out. The objective function is defined by the fuzzy minimum of the global design indices, global force/moment isotropy index, global force/moment payload index, and workspace. Each global index is calculated by a SVD (singular value decomposition) of the force and moment parts of the jacobian matrix. Division of the jacobian matrix assures a consistency of the units in the matrix. Due to the nonlinearity of this objective function, Genetic algorithms are adopted for a global optimization.

  • The dynamic response due to the unbalance and crack and the quasi-static response due to gravity are analytically derived based on the complex transfer matrix. The additional slope is expressed as function of the bending moment at crack position based on the fracture mechanics concept, and inversely the bending moment is expressed as function of the additional slope at the crack Position. At each angle step during the shaft revolution, the additional slope and bending moment are calculated by an iterativemethod. The transient behavior is considered by introducing Fourier series expansion concept for the additional slope. Simulation is carried out for a simple rotor similar to those available in the literature and comparison of the basic crack behavior is shown. Using the additional slope, the cracked rotor behavior is explained with the crack depth increased: the magnitude of the additional slope increases and the closed crack duration during a revolution decreases as the crack depth increases. The direction of unbalance is also shown as a factor to affect the crack breathing. Whirl orbits are shown near the sub-critical speed ranges of the rotor.

Topology Optimization of a HDD Actuator Arm (HDD 구동기 팔의 위상 최적화)

  • A study on the topology optimization of Hard-Disk-Driver(HDD) actuator arm in free vibration is presented. The purpose of this research is to increasse the natural frequency of the first lateral mode of the HDD actuator arm under the constraint of total moment of inertia, so as to facilitate the position control of high speed actuator am. The first lateral mode is an important factor in the position control process. Thus the topology optimization for 2-D model of the HDD actuator arm is considered. A new objective function corresponding to multieigenvalue optimization is suggested to improve the solution of the eigenvalue optimization problem. The material density of the structure is treated as the design variable and the intermediate density is penalized. The effects of different element types and material property functions on the final topology are studied. When the problem is discretized using 8-node element of a uniform density, the smoothly-varying density field is obtained without checker-board patterns incurred. As a result of the study an improved design of the HDD actuator arm is suggested. Dynamic characteristics of the suggested design are compared computationally with those of the old design. With the same amount of the moment of inertia, the natural frequency of the first lateral mode or the suggested design is subsequently increased over the existing one.

Low Cost Small CMG Performance Test and Analysis (저가 소형 CMG 성능시험 및 분석)

  • Control Moment Gyro(CMG) is one of the most efficient momentum exchange devices for satellite attitude control and CMG is very essential device for agile satellite. In this study, the essential dynamic equation for the design of gimbal motor and wheel motor is summarized. The development process of SGCMG hardware for agile small satellite system, the description of developed hardware and its performance test results are presented. Test result shows that the developed hardware model can produce an output torque more than 1.2Nm as designed. Other test items are max. torque, gimbal bandwidth, minimum torque, torque error, gimbal rate error.

  • In this paper, we developed modeling of tension and speed dynamics for a two-drum winder in a three span continuous web transport system which had not been previously. Dynamic modeling of the time-varying nonlinear system was derived by considering the effect of the radii and mass moment of inertia in the unwinder and the two-drum winder through winding up the web. After linearizing it, we designed with a variable-gain a PID controller for tension control and a PI controller for speed. Simulation is carried out with the variation of radii and moment of inertia at high speed for the proposed tension control system with the two-drum winder and the variavle-gain a PID controller. Results show good performance of tension control during the speed change speed at a start-up and stop.

Seismic Performance Evaluation According to Rotation Capacity of Connections for Intermediate Steel Moment Frames - II. Cause Evaluation and Alternative (접합부 회전성능에 따른 중간 철골 모멘트 골조의 내진 성능 평가 - II 원인 평가 및 대안)

  • This paper is the sequel of a companion paper (I. Performance Evaluation) evaluating the relation between the seismic performance of steel intermediate moment frames (IMFs) and the rotation capacity of connections. The evaluation revealed that the seismic performance of IMFs having the required minimum rotation capacity suggested in the current standards did not meet the seismic performance criteria presented in FEMA 695. Therefore, thepresent study evaluates the causes of the vulnerable seismic performance for steel IMFs and proposes alternatives to satisfy the seismic performance suggested in FEMA 695. To that goal, the results of nonlinear analysis, which are the pushover analysis and the incremental dynamic analysis, are examined and evaluated. As a result, high-rise IMF systems are seen to have the lower collapse margin ratio after connection fracture than row-rise IMF systems and, the actual response isfound to compared tothedesign drift ratio acting on design load design. Finally, the minimum design load values are proposed to meet the seismic performance suggested in FEMA 695 for IMF systems having vulnerable seismic performance.
