  • Changes in viscosity and dynamic theological properties of Job's-tears were measured by Bohlin dynamic tester as a function of moisture, and measurement was performed within a linear viscoelastic range. The result of the shear stress vs shear rate of Job's-tears at different moisture contents $(50{\sim}75%)$ was applied to mathematical models and Herschel-Bulkley model showed the highest correlation coefficient. Lower moisture content (55%) produced higher yield stress and consistency index, but lower flow behavior index, whereas higher moisture content showed reverse effects. Job's-tears with $50{\sim}70%$ moisture contents showed a higher storage modulus (G') than loss modulus (G') at all frequencies, showing a higher concentrated polymer characteristics. However, higher moisture content (>75%) showed crossover point between G' and G', and frequency dependency. As the moisture content was increased, the amount of viscoelastic properties such as G', G', complex viscosity decreased during heating, and initial temperature and miximum value of viscoelastic properties shifted to higher temperatures, representing the moisture-dependence of Job's-tears upon theological properties.

  • In hot pressed wood of Pseudotsuga menziesii compressed to 0 - 50 percent at temperature 60 - $180^{\circ}C$, relative humidity conditions affecting dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity and internal friction were investigated. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Moisture absorption of the hot pressed wood decreased with increasing press temperature, but there was no effect on the amount of compression. Thickness swelling dereased with increasing press temperature, and increased with increasing amount of compression. In general, dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity showed a straight line with increasing specific gravity of specimens. Dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity decreased with increasing moisture content, but internal friction increased with increasing amount of moisture content. Dynamic Young's modulus of R specimens pressed in the radial direction showed hight values than T specimens pressed in the tangential direction.

  • The effects of moisture content on non-fracture dynamic properties and fracture gel quality of Pacific whiting surimi were investigated to determine their relationships. Surimi samples were tested at various moisture contents (75, 78, and 81 %). Torsion test showed that shear stress decreased rapidly and strain values decreased gradually as moisture concentration increased. Dynamic storage modulus (G') also decreased as moisture content increased. A strong positive correlation ($R^2=0.90$ to 0.99) was found between the G' measured at temperatures between 10 and $45^{\circ}C$ and fracture stress values. The results indicate that dynamic rheological measurements could be used as a tool for early gel quality assessment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among density, moisture content, and modulus of elasticity in which are important characteristics in physical and mechanical properties of woods. In this study, the dynamic MOE was calculated through the combination with resonance frequency of transverse vibration method and density, and the estimated moisture contents were calculated with two different equations (1, 2) in order to compare with experimental moisture contents. The following results from this study were obtained: 1. According to the regression analysis with two different parameters (E and density), the two regression lines appeared to be straight intersecting at 0.6 density. As another factor, moisture contents in wood also influenced on the analysing regression at the below F.S.P. 2. When considering the relationship between moisture contents and E, the tendency of each moisture content and E showed very similar pattern suggesting that moisture contents in addition to density are very important parameter. 3. When together with moisture contents and density as parameters for multiple regression analysis, coefficiences of determinations are dramatically improved. Interestingly, the coefficiences of determinations are further increased when analysing at the below point of F.S.P. and when analysing higher and lower density separately. In summary, more correct estimation of the dynamic MOE of woods can be possible with only transverse vibration and density in wood. Therefore, with this indirect method, the calculation of MOE in all kinds of woods including timber, live tree and wood products can be feasible resulting in accelerating the efficiency of time and labor.

  • High performance concrete (HPC) has been extensively used in thin overlay for repair purpose due to its excellent strength and durability. This paper presents an experiment, where the sensor-instrumented HPC overlays have been followed by dynamic strain and moisture content monitoring for 1 year, under normal traffic. The vibrating wire and soil moisture sensors were embedded in overlay before construction. Four given HPC mixes (2 original mixes and their shrinkage-modified mixes) were used for overlays to contrast the strain and moisture results. A calibration method to accurately measure the moisture content for a given concrete mixture using soil moisture sensor was established. The monitoring results indicated that the modified mixes performed much better than the original mixes in shrinkage cracking control. Weather condition and concrete maturity at early age greatly affected the strain in concrete. The strain in HPC overlay was primarily in longitudinal direction, leading to transverse cracks. Additionally, the most moisture loss in concrete occurred at early age. Its rate was very dependent on weather. After one year, cracking survey was carried out by vision to verify the strain direction and no cracks observed in shrinkage modified mixes.

  • Viscoelastic characteristics of agricultural products may be determined through three basic tests ; stress relaxation, creep, and dynamic test. Considering the changeability of living materials, dynamic test in which information is derived in a relatively short time appears to be highly desirable, in which either cyclic stress or cyclic strain is imposed and the remaining quantity (strain or stress) is measured. The periodically varying stress will also result in periodically varying strain which in a viscoelastic material should theoretically be out of phase with the stress, because part of the energy subjected to sample is stored in the material as potential energy and part is dissipated as heat. This behavior results in a complex frequency-dependent compliance denoted by J($i{\omega}$). The complex compliance and therefore the storage compliance, the loss compliance, the phase angle, and percent energy loss for the sample should be obtainable with a given static viscoelastic property of the material under static load. The complex compliance of the rough rice kernel were computed from the Burger's model describing creep behavior of the material which were obtained in the previous study. Also, the effects of cyclic load and moisture content of grain on the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of the samples were analyized. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The storage compliance of the rough rice kernel slightly decreased with the frequency applied but at above the frequency of 0.1 Hz it was nearly constant with the frequency, and the loss compliance of the sample very rapidly decreased with increase in the frequency on those frequency ranges. 2. It was shown that the storage compliance and the loss compliance of the sample increased with increase in grain moisture content. Effect of grain moisture content on the storage compliance of the sample was highly significant than effect of the frequency applied, but effect of the frequency on the loss compliance of the sample was more significant than effect of grain moisture content. 3. In low moisture content, the percent energy loss of Japonica-type rough rice was much higher than that of Indica-type rough rice, but, in high moisture content, vice versa.

  • Paulownia wood has been used as sound board for Korean traditional musical instruments such as Keomungo(Korean lute), Kayagum(twelve-stringed Korean harp) and Changgu(hour-glass shaped drum), etc. The acoustic properties of wood affected not only by dimensions but also by density and stiffness of wood. Due to inhomogeneity and hygroscopicity of wood. the acoustic properties of wood are inconsistent. To clarify the effect of moisture content and air dry density on acoustic properties, longitudinal vibration experiment was accomplished in 3 moisture content levels of 9.6, 11.1 and 12.5% and in 3 air dry density levels of 0.22, 0.25 and 0.28g/$cm^3$. The results were as follows: As the moisture content increased, the fundamental frequency. specific dynamic Young's modulus and sound velocity decreased, but the internal friction increased so that loss of energy increased. The values in damping of sound radiation were rapidly decreased at 12.5%. It meant that the damping of internal friction was larger than damping of sound radiation at high moisture content. As the air dry density increased, the fundamental frequency, specific dynamic Young's modulus and sound velocity increased, but the internal friction and damping of sound radiation decreased so that loss of energy decreased. And acoustic converting efficiency was hardly influenced by increasing air drying density.
