  • Traffic nonuniformity degrades the performance of DCMA cellular systems. This paper presents a new algorithm called the Soft Handoff with Dynamic Thresholds (SHDT) which reduces the performance degeradation due traffic nonuniformity on CDMA systems. Unlike the conventional fixed handoff thresholds, algorithm allows the handoff thresholds (T_ADD and T_DROP) to vary dynamically according to the traffic density of each cell. This algerian has been implemented by means of computer simulation and the results show that SHDT improves the overall CDMA system performance in terms of outage probability. The SHDT algorithm can easily be applied to CDMA cellular systems without my modification.

  • Many new structural systems have been developed to build free-form structures, which is the new architectural trend for aesthetic beauty. The diagrid system resists both gravity and later loads, with its perimeter-diagonal columns. In the current seismic-design provisions, however, a seismic-performance factor for a new structural system has not yet been provided. ATC-63 provides a new methodology for defining various seismic-performance factors, including the response modification factor. In this paper, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were conducted for the 3D diagrid frame, with each load applied at $0-180^{\circ}$ degrees. Through these analyses, the seismic performance of the diagrid system was evaluated.

  • In this study, the PPS/ABS blend system was investigated in order to collectively identify the relationship among blend morphology, chemical compatibilization and thermal property. ABS resin was chemically modified by the incorporation of maleic anhydride through reactive extrusion for enhanced compatibilization, and PPS, ABS and the modified ABS were blend by a sing twin screw extruder. The effect of chemical modification of ABS on the morphological, mechanical, and thermal properities of the resulting blend was examined. A strong interaction was observed between PPS and MABS by optical microsopy as well as scanning electron microscopy, exhibiting a well-dispersed morphological feature. The PPS/MABS blend showing a single glass transition temperature was observed in dynamic mechanical analysis, demonstrating a pseudo-homogeneous phase morphology induced by chemical compatibilization. PPS/MABS blend also exhibited an enhanced thermal stability and heat distortion temperature compared with modified PPS/ABS blend.

  • In this paper, the vibration and shock of an HDD car-holder are reduced through vibration analysis and a structural modification. In order to identify the exciting frequency components of vibration and shock, vibration signals are measured and analyzed from the wind shield or dashboard. In addition, the modal test for the current HDD car-holder is performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the car-holder. From these experiments, it is found that the exciting frequencies coincide to the natural frequencies of the car-holder. For the purpose of avoiding resonance, some FEM simulations are carried out and then structural modifications are made for the car-holder. Based on the results of simulations, a prototype of new car-holder are manufactured and tested to demonstrate the reduction of vibration and shock. It is verified by the test that a considerable amount of vibration and shock are reduced.

  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.

  • This paper presents regularly micro-textured glass surfaces ensuring the superhydrophobic properties in the Cassie-Baxter regime. The proposed surfaces were fabricated simply and efficiently by filling the glass material into a silicon micro-mold with periodic micro-cavities based on a thermal-reflow process, resulting in a successful demonstration of the textured glass surface with periodically-arrayed micro-pillar structures. The static and dynamic wetting properties of the micro-textured glass surfaces were characterized by measuring the static contact angle (SCA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH), respectively. In addition, the surface wettability was estimated theoretically based on Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter wetting theories, and compared with the experimental ones. Through the experimental and theoretical observations, it was clearly confirmed that the proposed micro-textured glass surfaces showed the slippery superhydrophobic behaviors in the Cassie-Baxter wetting mode.

  • Because present road traffic reaches to the limitation of its faculty, Korean tilting train was developed to find the solution by increasing the speed of rail road. A tilting train can run on a curved rail at high speed so it improves a speed of a rail transit without constructing a new line. Only minimum modification is necessary for a existing line. According to above requirement, Korean tilting train was developed in 2007 and the try run has been executing since April, 2007 in order to validate its safety and reliability in a service lines. And this test and estimation will be completed in 2009. After completing a try run, main parts of tilting train will be studied again to commercialize and localize including a bogie and its commercial model design will be finalized by 2012. In order to achieve the development target as mentioned above, the study have been done to improve the bogie system. As the first step to design commercialized bogie system, measurements from the try run and a dynamic analysis were used to find problems of present bogie system well. So this project is performed to decide what parts of the bogie should be modified in basis of this result.

  • In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was employed to model the stretchable Ising monolayer film to investigate the effect of the spatial distance variation among magnetic atoms on magnetic behavior of the film. The exchange interaction was considered as functions of initial interatomic distance and the stretched distance (or the strain). Following Bethe-Slater picture, the magnetic exchange interaction took the Lennard-Jones potential-like function. Monte Carlo simulations via the Wolff and Metropolis algorithms were used to update the spin systems, where equilibrium and dynamic magnetic profiles were collected. From the results, the strain was found to have strong influences on magnetic behavior, especially the critical behavior. Specifically, the phase transition point was found to either increase or decrease depending on how the exchange interaction shifts (i.e. towards or away from the maximum value). In addition, empirical functions which predict how the critical temperatures scale with initial interatomic distance and the strain were proposed, which provides qualitatively view how to fine tune the magnetic critical point in monolayer film using the substrate modification induced strain.

  • Utilization of fiber beam-column element has gained considerable attention in recent years due mainly to its ability to model distributed plasticity over the length of the element through a number of integration points. However, the relatively high sensitivity of the method to modeling parameters as well as material behavior models can pose a significant challenge. Residual drift is one of the seismic demands which is highly sensitive to modeling parameters and material behavior models. Permanent deformations play a prominent role in the post-earthquake evaluation of serviceability of bridges affected by a near-fault ground shaking. In this research, the influence of distributed plasticity modeling parameters using both force-based and displacement-based fiber elements in the prediction of internal forces obtained from the nonlinear static analysis is studied. Having chosen suitable type and size of elements and number of integration points, the authors take the next step by investigating the influence of material behavioral model employed for the prediction of permanent deformations in the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The result shows that the choice of element type and size, number of integration points, modification of cyclic concrete behavior model and reloading strain of concrete significantly influence the fidelity of fiber element method for the prediction of permanent deformations.

  • The risk of offshore wind turbine support structures by scour has been proposed. The proposed utilize probabilities of scour depths and fragilities according to scour depth and a modification of a seismic risk analysis method. The probability distribution of scour depth was calculated using a equation which is suitable to consider marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant period, and current velocity, and dynamic analysis was performed on an offshore wind turbine equipped with an suction bucket to find fragility. Then, the risk of offshore wind turbine support structure considering scour can be found by integrating the scour probability and the fragility.
