  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.

  • Power packs can change energy to hydraulic energy generated by an engine as a tool for use with civil engineering construction equipment. This paper determines which type of power pack meets the standards of construction machinery. A power pack was formulated as a three-dimensional model by using the software CATIA. A modal analysis was conducted using ANSYS Workbench, and the resonance was checked. Next, a harmonic analysis was conducted. The analytical results show that the dynamic stability of the power pack is assured.

  • Due to the rapid increase of long-distance transportation, particular attentions have been paid to truck tires, especially to their dynamic characteristics. In this research, experimental modal analysis on two kinds of light-truck tires, i.e., radial tire and bias tire, are performed by using GRFP(global rational fraction polynomial) method to investigate differences of the dynamic behavior of the two tires. The test results have shown that the modal frequencies of bias tire are much higher than their corresponding values of radial tire with a similar mode shape, which is in accordance with the fact that the radial rigidity of bias tire is higher than that of radial tire. And most of the modal decay rates of bias tire are larger than those of radial tire within the scope of this experiment. In the frequency domain range of test, the bias tire has extra modes, which do not occur in the radial tire. This difference is based on the fact that the circumferential rigidity of the bias tire is quite low whereas that of radial tire is so high that the frequencies of the corresponding modes are out of the frequency range of test.

  • Static and dynamic responses of micro double cantilever beam structures interacted by electrostatic forces are obtained employing Galerkin's method based on Euler beam theory. Variations of static and dynamic responses as well as natural frequencies are estimated for several sets of beam properties and applied voltages. It is shown that the variations of beam properties resulted by manufacturing process influence the deflections and the modal characteristics significantly. Such information can be usefully employed for the design of MEMS structures.

  • A three-dimensional finite element model for the Jiashao Bridge, the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge in the world, is established using the commercial software package ANSYS. Dynamic characteristics of the bridge are analyzed and the effects of structural system measures including the rigid hinge, auxiliary piers and longitudinal constraints between the girders and side towers on the dynamic properties including modal frequency, mode shape and effective mass are studied by referring to the Jiashao Bridge. The analysis results reveal that: (i) the installation of the rigid hinge significantly reduces the modal frequency of the first symmetric lateral bending mode of bridge deck. Moreover, the rigid hinge significantly changes the mode shape and effective mass of the first symmetric torsional mode of bridge deck; (ii) the layout of the auxiliary piers in the side-spans has a limited effect on changing the modal frequencies, mode shapes and effective masses of global vibration modes; (iii) the employment of the longitudinal constraints significantly increases the modal frequencies of the vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck and have significant effects on changing the mode shapes of vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck. Moreover, the effective mass of the first anti-symmetric vertical bending of bridge deck in the longitudinal direction of the fully floating system is significantly larger than that of the partially constrained system and fully constrained system. The results obtained indicate that the structural system measures of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge have a great effect on the dynamic properties, which deserves special attention for seismic design and wind-resistant design of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge.

  • The paper presents modal testing and analysis in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of a middle spacer grids of a nuclear fuel rod. A spacer grid is one of the important structural elements supporting nuclear fuel rods. Such a fuel rod can be oscillated by its thermal expansion, neutron irradiation and etc. due to cooling water flow under the operation of a nuclear power plant. When the fuel rod vibrates, fretting wear due to repeated friction motion between the fuel rods and spacer grids can be occurred, and so the fuel rod is damaged. In this paper, through modal analysis and testing, natural frequencies and modes of a middle spacer grid were calculated, and the following conclusions were obtained. Firstly the numerical first-seven natural frequencies for spacer grids of a fuel rod having complicated structures have a small difference within 3.8% with experimental natural frequencies, and so the suitability of simulation results was verified. Secondly, experimental mode shapes for a middle spacer grid of a nuclear fuel rod were verified by obtaining lower non-diagonal terms through MAC(Modal Assurance Criteria), and were confirmed by the simulation modes.

  • This paper described the dynamic characteristics of 20-story apartment buildings from the results of full-scale measurements and analysis. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are quantified by measuring and analyzing ambient vibrations of the structure and compared with the results from dynamic analysis. Comparison with computed mode shapes and frequencies shows good agreement with the experimental results. It proved that it is important to estimate coupling beam and soil parameters through a comparison of the measured results with calculated results.

  • The bi-modal vehicle is composed of two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension and all wheels are steerable. Since the bi-modal vehicle has longer wheelbase than most urban buses, the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system is adapted for to ensure safe driving and proper turning radius on a curved road. This paper proposes an AWS control algorithm for stable driving of bi-modal vehicle. Steering angles and directions of each axle of bi-modal vehicle changed according to the driving environment and steering modes. In the case that front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions is a negative mode, and the other case that the axles should be steered in the same direction is a positive mode. For example, in the positive mode, front and real axles are steered in the same direction, while in the negative mode, they are steered in the opposite direction. A multibody model of the vehicle is used to verify the performance of the steering algorithm and simulation results of 2WS are compared with those of AWS under the same condition.

  • Complex dynamic systems are composed of several subsystems. Each subsystems affect the dynamics of other subsystems since they are connected to each other in the whole system. Theoretically, we can derive the exact mass and stiffness matrix of a system if we have the natural frequencies and mode shapes of that system. In real situation, the modal parameters for the higher modes are not available and the number of degree of freedom concerned are not so high. This paper shows a simple method to derive the mass and stiffness matrix of a system considering the connecting points of subsystems. Since the accuracy of reconstructed structure depends on the selection of node and mode, the rule for selection of node and mode are derived from the numerical examples.

  • In this study, the experimental modal analysis is performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of slider-air bearings in hard disk drives. Bump response of the slider is acquired by measuring the relative velocity for two points using the laser interferometer, in which the disk is scratched lightly by a sharp knife to make a bump. From the measurements, the modal parameters of the head slider, modal frequencies and damping ratios of roll and pitch, are estimated by data processing and parameter estimation.
