The typical design of automotive driveshafts generally utilizes Constant Velocity(CV) joints as a solution to NVH. CV joints are an integral part of vehicles and significantly affect steering, suspension, and vehicle vibration comfort levels. Thus, CV joints have been favored over universal joints due to the constant velocity torque transfer and plunging capability. Although CV joints are common in vehicle applications, current research works on modeling CV joint friction and assumes constant empirical friction coefficient values. However, such models are long known to be inaccurate, especially under dynamic conditions, which is the case for CV joints. In this paper, an instrumented advanced CV joint friction apparatus was developed to measure the internal friction behavior of CV joints using actual tripod-type joint assemblies. The setup is capable of measuring key performance of friction under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, torque and joint installation angles. The apparatus incorporates a custom-installed triaxial force sensor inside of the joint to measure the internal CV joint forces(including friction). Using the designed test setup, the intrinsic interfacial parameters of CV joints were investigated in order to understand their contact and friction mechanisms. The results provide a better understanding of CV joint friction characteristics in developing improved automotive driveshafts.
This paper presents an experimental approach to study the effect of friction on magnerorheological (MR) fluids. Both steady and dynamic modes were employed to investigate MR fluid behaviors. The experimental results indicate that the total MR effects are dominated by two factors: magnetic force and friction force. Conventionally, the magnetic force contribution to MR effect has been intensively studied while the friction force effect has attracted less attention. This study provides a method to quantitatively predict the friction contribution to the total MR effect. It may be used to effectively analyze enhanced MR effects reported by other groups. Also, it might provide good guidance to develop high-efficiency MR fluids.
This paper describes the estimation of the solid friction in mechanical systems by using the extended Kalman filtering techniques. We proposed two stochastic model for the estimation. The one is the 'parametric model' which represents the friction characteristics by an exponential function with unknown parameters. The other is the 'blind model' which does not assume an explicit model but regard the effect of the friction as an unknown input to a known dynamic system. For both models, we give estimation algorithms to generate the filtered estimate and the smoothed estimate with a fixed lag. The filtered estimate can be generated on-line for compensating the solid friction in mechanical systems. Although on-line applications are impossible, the smoothed estimate is more accurate and can be used to grasp precise friction characteristics. Simulation and experimental results arc presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

effect of pounding and friction between oscillators upon global response behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined in this study. For convenience an idealized mechanical model is proposed which still retains the dynamic characteristics of bridge motions using multiple oscillators, Each oscillator is consisting of four degrees-of-freedom to implement the pounding between the adjacent oscillators and friction at movable supports, The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction at movable supports. The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction respectively. Also the effects of abutments are investigated by adding the addition oscillators consisting of two degrees-of-freedom. The effects of pounding and frictions are determined using the proposed model and the effect of the abutment is also verified, It is found that both pounding and friction affect the bridge responses significantly while the first pounding occurs between the abutment and the nearby oscillator.
This paper presents a stabilization control designed to improve position stabilization performance of a position servo-system(turret) mounted on a manuvering platform(vehicle). In the consideration of the motion of the platform, a dynamic model of the stabilization system is derived and shows the viscous and stick-slip friction torques are the major source of stabilization errors. An extended generalized minimum variance control which consists of a feedforward disturbance compensation as well as a pole placement feedback control is suggested to reduce the stabilization errors caused from the friction disturbances. This modeling and control are applied to a small experimental set-up and the experimental results confirm the accuracy of the model and the effectiveness of the suggested control.
The friction is inevitable and unpredictable phenomena, so most mechanical systems are designed to low friction effect by using bearings and lubricants. However, the slip-stick actuator applies the friction force to its movement. The slip-stick mechanism is applied the piezoelectric actuator to overcome short displacement. Fast response of piezoelectric actuator is also good characteristic for the slip-stick mechanism. However, the piezoelectric actuator with slip-stick mechanism isn't common, because its cost and driving voltage are too high. In this paper, a voice-coil actuator with slip-stick mechanism is introduced. The cost and the driving voltage of a voice-coil actuator are much less than the piezoelectric actuator. And a dynamic vibration amplifier is proposed to adjust the dynamic performance of the actuator. By the results of numerical analysis, the feasibility of a dynamic vibration amplifier is verified.
