  • In this work, a numerical and experimental study was done to get an optimum cam profile considering dynamic characteristics of a cam-valve system. First of all, a four degree of freedom dynamic model was set up for an OHV type cam-valve acceleration while not modifying original cam shape greatly. Also another optimization which aims to enlarge the valve displacement area while reducing the peak valve acceleration, was tried. The optimized cam profile was tested experimentally and found that the measured valve displacement and pushrod force show only very small error from the analytically predicted model simulation results.

  • This paper analyzed a drainage tower used to drain water in flooded areas. Multi-body dynamics simulation was used to analyze the dynamic behavior of the drainage tower. Structural analysis, flexible-body dynamic analysis, and rigid body dynamic analysis were done to study the maximum Von-Mises stress of the drainage tower. The results showed that the maximum Von-Mises stress occurs at the turn table, and it decreases when the angle of the boom is increased. Also, the rate of the change of angle affects the maximum stress so that the maximum stress changes more when the angular velocity of the boom increases. Based on the rigid body dynamic analysis and the theoretical analysis results, the centrifugal force from the angular velocity makes the difference in the maximum stress at the turn table because of the difference in their direction. Consequently, it was concluded that the centrifugal force should be considered when designing construction machinerythat can rotate.

  • Generally, the accuracy of motion control systems is strongly influenced by both the mechanical characteristics and servo characteristics of feed drive systems. In the fed drive systems of machine tools that consist of mechanical parts and electrical parts, a torsional vibration is often generated because of its elastic elements in torque transmission. Especially, a torsional vibration caused by the elasticity of mechanical elements might deteriorate the quick movement of system and lead to shorten the life time of the mechanical transmission elements. So it is necessary to analyze the electromechanical system mathematically to optimize the dynamic characteristics of the feed drive system. In this paper, based on the simplifies feed drive system model, radius errors due to position gain mismatch and servo response characteristic have been developed and an optimal criterion for tuning the gain of speed controller is discussed. The proportional and integral parameter gain of the feed drive controller are optimal design variables for the gain tuning of PI speed controller. Through the optimization problem formulation, both proportional and integral parameter are optimally tuned so as to compensate the radius errors by using the genetic algorithm. As a result, higher performance on circular profile tests has been achieved than the one with standard parameters.

  • Nowadays, there are two classes of methods for damage detection in structures consisting of static and dynamic. The dynamic methods are based on studying the changes in structure's dynamic characteristics. The theoretical basis of this method is that damage causes changes in dynamic characteristics of structures. The dynamic methods are divided into two categories: signal based and modal based. The modal based methods utilize the modal properties consisting of natural frequencies, modal damping and mode shapes. As the modal properties are sensitive to changes in the structure, these can be used for detecting the damages. In this study, using dynamic method and modal based approach (natural frequencies and mode shapes), the objective function is formulated. Then, detection of damages of truss structures is addressed by using Simplified Dolphin Echolocation algorithm and solving inverse optimization problem. Many scenarios are used to simulate the damages. To demonstrate the ability of the algorithm, different truss structures with several multiple elements scenarios are tested using a few runs. The influence of the two different levels of noise in the modal data for these scenarios is also considered. The last example of this article is investigated using a different mutation. This mutation obtains the exact answer with fewer loops and population by limited computational effort.

  • The primary suspension system of a railway vehicle restrains the wheelset and the bogie, which greatly affects the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle depending on the stiffness in each direction. In order to improve the dynamic characteristics, different stiffness in each direction is required. However, designing different stiffness in each direction is difficult in the case of a general suspension device. To address this, in this paper, an optimization technique is applied to design different stiffness in each direction by using a conical rubber spring. The optimization is performed by using target and analysis RMS values. Lastly, the final model is proposed by complementing the shape of the weak part of the model. An actual model is developed and the reliability of the optimization model is proved on the basis of a deviation average of about 7.7% compared to the target stiffness through a static load test. In addition, the stiffness value is applied to a multibody dynamics model to analyze the stability and curve performance. The critical speed of the improved model was 190km/h, which was faster than the maximum speed of 110km/h. In addition, the steering performance is improved by 34% compared with the conventional model.

  • This paper presents design and analysis of ultrasonic vibrator featuring the piezoelectric actuator. After describing a geometric configuration of the proposed vibrator, an analytical model of the ultrasonic vibrator is formulated by adopting liquid film pattern theory and wave theory. The dynamic analysis and geometric optimization are then undertaken using a software ANSYS. The optimization is performed by taking the amplitude of the tip displacement as an objective function. The fluid flow characteristics of the proposed vibrator are analyzed by taking three different fluids: water, silicon oil and ethylene-glycol. This is achieved using a software FLUENT.

  • This paper describes the optimum design for journal bearings by using simulated annealing method. Simulated annealing algorithm is an optimization technique to calculate global and local optimum solutions. Dynamic characteristics of the journal bearing are calculated by using finite difference method (FDM), and these values are used for the procedure of journal bearing optimization. The objective is to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) of the simple rotor system supported by the journal bearings. Bearing clearance and length to diameter ratio are used as the design variables.

  • Substructures position is considered as design parameter to obtain optimal structural changes to raise its dynamic characteristics. In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. For effective structural modification the eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to that design parameter is derived based on measured frequency response function. The optimal structural modification is calculated by combining eigenvalue sensitivities and eigenvalue reanalysis technique iteratively. Numerical examples are presented to the case of beam stiffener optimization to raise the natural frequency of plate.
