  • This paper proposes a new filter topology that suppresses the high voltage gradient(dv/dt) in ac motor terminals. The high voltage gradient(dv/dt) causes over voltages on the motor windings, the degradation or motor insulation, and the bearing failure. Moreover surge voltage with high voltage gradient(dv/dt) in the PWM inverter red drive system where long line cables are required causes more serious problem to the motor. Thus, the most advisable method is attaching output filter to the inverter output terminals. The conventional output filters have several problems such as bulky size, difficulty or parameter tuning. The proposed filter can be relatively smaller than the conventional filters. By the proposed filter, the shaping or PWM waveform can considerably suppress high dv/dt in motor feeding cable from the inverter. The effectiveness or the proposed filter is compared with that or the conventional one and is verified by the computer simulation.

  • In this paper filtering techniques to reduce the adverse effects of motor leads on high-frequency PWM inverter fed AC motor drives are presented. The filter was designed to keep the motor terminal from the cable surge impedance to reduce overvoltage reflections ringing and the dv/dt, di/dt, at the motor terminals. Specially the output filter is used to limit the rate of the inverter output voltage and reduce common mode noise to the motor, The performance of the output filter is evaluated through simulations and experiment on PWM inverter-fed AC motor drive. An experimental PWM drive system reduction of conducted EMI was implemented on an available TMS320C31 microprocessor control board Finally, experimental result shows inverter output filter reduces more common mode voltage than low pass filter also reduce overoltage and ringing at the motor terminal.

  • In general, the generated harmonics and noise of the PWM inverter are affected by PWM switching method, switching frequency, dv/dt and di/dt. Since multilevel inverters are often applied to the high power system, and operates with low switching frequency, theyproduce large size of harmonic contents and noise. Thus it is necessary to install output filters in the multilevel inverter. In this paper a filter design approach for the harmonic and noise reduction the three phase induction motor driving system using H-bridge 7-level inverter system is presented. The passive filter that has low cost and simple structure and can effectively reduce harmonics and noise, is designed and applied to the three phase induction motor drive having multilevel inverter system. The designed system is implemented and verified by simulation and experiments.

  • In motor application, High efficiency is important. So Design engineer select small gate resistor for lower switching. But There is side effect with small gate resistor. It makes large dv/dt and system request large EMI filter. It makes price increase. This paper introduce about gate drive IC which have solution both of lower loss and EMI issue.

  • In this paper, filters are designed to reduce transients overvoltage in inverter fed high-voltage large-capacity induction motor drive system. Design issues for a LCR filter at the inverter output terminals to reduce the dv/dt of the inverter output pulse and a RC filter at the induction motor input terminals to match the characteristic impedance between cable and induction motor are examined in detail. These filters are modeled to be suitable to high-voltage large-capacity induction motor. The performance of the filter is evaluated through simulation using EMTP(ElectroMagnetic Transients Program). We presented filters that used high voltage large-capacity induction Motor on the basis of this. Effect of the filter is analyzed for variation of the cable length. Characteristics of filters are analyzed to reduce harmonic in voltage waveform of induction motor input terminal. The switching surge voltage became the major cause to occur the insulation failure by serious voltage stress in the stator winding of induction motor. Filter for to mitigate transients overvoltage presents a required component in drive system of high-voltage large-capacity induction motor. Also, proposed filters are proved through simulation using EMTP.

  • In this paper, filtering techniques to reduce the adverse effects of motor leads on high-frequency PWM inverter fed AC motor drives will be examined. The filter was designed to keep the motor terminal from the cable surge impedance to reduce overvoltage reflections, ringing, and the dv/dt, di/dt. Therefore, filtering techniques are investigated to reduce the motor terminal overvoltage, ringing, and EMI noise in inverter fed ac motor drive systems. The output filter is used to limit the rate of the inverter output voltage and reduce EMI(common mode noise) to the motor. The performance of the output filter is evaluated through simulations (PSIM) and experiment on PWM inverter-fed ac motor drive(3phase, 3hp(2.2kw), input voltage 220/380V, induction motor). An experimental PWM drive system reduction of conducted EMI was implemented on an available TMS320C31 microprocessor control board. Finally, experimental results showed that the inverter output filter reduces more CM noise than the LPF(low pass filter) and reduce overvoltage and ringing at the motor terminal.

  • In this paper, we investigate a filtering technique to reduce the adverse effect of long motor leads on H-bridge cascaded 7-level inverter fed ac motor drive. The switching surge voltage becomes the major cause to occur the insulation failure by serious voltage stress in the stator winding of high voltage induction motor. However, the effect of switching surge appears un seriousin high voltage induction motor than low voltage induction motor. Consequently, we demonstrated that the filter connected to the motor terminals greatly reduces the transient voltage stress and ringing, moreover we show lowers the dv/dt of the inverter switching pulse. The results of simulation show the suppression of dv/dt and the reduced peak voltage at the motor end of a long cable.

  • Higher operating frequency provides rising output power from modern power electronics devices. Nevertheless, the switch-mode operation results in EMI which is produced due to large di/dt and/or dv/dt. The methods to reduce EMI are the use of classic and expensive input filters or the addition of the active filter into the main circuits. In this paper, by using the randomized PWM the EMI effect can be reduced and implementation of the proposed control scheme into the forward converter can improve the harmonic spectrum as well

  • This paper provides a comparison of power converter loss and thermal description for voltage source and current source type 5MW-class medium voltage topologies of wind turbines. Neutral-point clamped three-level converter is adopted for voltage source type topology while two-level converter is employed for current source type topology considering the popularity in the industry. In order to match the required voltage level of 4160V with the same switching device of IGCT as in voltage source converter, two active switches are connected in series for the case of current source converter. The loss analysis is confirmed through PLECS simulations. In addition, the loss factors due to di/dt and dv/dt snubber and ac input filter are presented. The comparison result shows that VSC-based wind turbine system has a higher efficiency than that of CSC under the rated operating conditions.

  • The development of advanced Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor(IGBT)has enabled high-frequency switching operation and has improved the performance of PWM inverters for motor drive. However, the high rate of dv/dt of IGBT has adverse effects on motor insulation stress. In many motor drive applications, the inverter and motor are separated and it requires long motor feds. The long cable contributes high frequency ringing at the motor terminal and it results in hight surge voltage which stresses the motor insulation. The inverter output filter and RDC snubber are conventional method which can reduce the surge voltage. In this paper, we propose the new low loss snubber to reduce the motor terminal surge voltage. The snubber consists of the series connection of charging/discharging capacitor and the voltage-clamped capacitor. At IGBT turn-off, the snubber starts to operate when the IGBT voltage reaches the voltage-clamped level. Since dv/dt is decreased by snubber operating, the peak level of the surge voltage can be reduced. Also the snubber operates at the IGBT voltage above the voltage-clamped level, the snubber loss is largely reduced comparing with RDC snubber. The proposed snubber enables to reduce the motor terminal surge voltage with low loss.
