  • In this study, we studied the photocatalytic functionality such as deodorant, antibacterial, antistatic of polyester fabrics treated with visible-light responsive photocatalyst. According to UV/visible spectrometry result, the UV-visible peak of visible-light responsive photocatalyst was found to be red shift at 420 nm sensitive in the visible light region. Also, the deodorizing and antimicrobial performance were shown to be retained more than 99% both before washing and even after 25 times washing. According to washing durability of polyester fabrics treated with visible-light responsive photocatalyst, the reduction effects for gas such as ammonia, trimethylamine, formaldehyde and toluene after 25 times washing appeared to be retained as much as before washing. At both before washing and after 25 times washing, antistatic property showed frictional voltage of approximately 250V.

  • The functionality such as deodorant, antibacterial, ultraviolet shielding of titanium dioxide self-actuated photocatalyst $Weltouch^{TM}$ treated polyester fiber was characterized in conditions without light. The deodorizing capacity was maintained more than 97% reduction irrespective of before washing and after 20 times repeated washing, and antimicrobial capacity was also retained more than 99.9% reduction. Titanium dioxide self-actuated photocatalyst was still maintained to the surface of polyester fiber without separation even after 20 times repeated washing. According to washing durability of polyester fiber, the reduction effect for ammonia was still retained even after 20 times repeated washing as much as before washing. The ultraviolet shielding capacity was still maintained at least 83% irrespective of before washing and 20 times repeated washing.

  • This study aimed to ex situ colorize laccase-entrapped bacterial cellulose (BC) with natural phenolic dyes, namely, madder, turmeric, and cochineal, and to determine the effect of laccase entrapment on the dyeability of BC using color strength (K/S) analysis. Results showed that laccase entrapment improved the dyeability of BC and that pre-entrapment was the most effective method, compared with meta-entrapment and post-entrapment methods. In addition, surface characterizations confirmed the successful entrapment of laccase inside the BC nanostructure and retention of the cellulosic and crystalline structures of BC. The washing durability test confirmed that the K/S value of BC had improved after laccase entrapment. Furthermore, laccase-entrapped BC colorized with cochineal dye had the highest washing durability due to the high molecular weight of cochineal dyerelative to the other dyes. This study suggests a novel method for enhancing the dyeability and washing durability of BC colorized ex situ with natural phenolic dyes by laccase entrapment.

  • Cotton fabric was treated with chitosan solution by pad-dry(-cure) method to impart antimicrobial properties. Four chitosans of different degree of deacetylation(DAC: 65~95%) with similar molecular weight(ca. 50, 000) and one chitosan oligomer(MW 1, 800, DAC 86%) were used. Antimicribial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated by the Shake Flask Method. Treated fabrics were laundered up to 20 times according to AATCC Test Method 60-1986 and antimicrobial activity of laundered fabrics was evaluated. The antimicrobial activity was increased with the concentration and DAC of chitosan used. And the cured samples showed better durability to laundering than not-cured samples. Crosslinker and binder decreased the antimicrobial activity of fabrics treated with chitosan oligomer and were not effective to improve the durability to washing.

  • The effects of e-beam irradiation on water-repellency and washing durability of water-repellent finished chemically-recycled PET(CR-PET) fabrics were investigated. As results, more doses of e-beam irradiation damaged the fabric surface more severely. It was thought because the high densed energy was formed, where the more e-beam was converged. The contact angle measurement showed that as the dose of e-beam irradiation increased, water wettability of the CR-PET fabric increased slightly. It was thought to be due that the surface etching by e-beam irradiation let water droplet permeate into the fabric surface better. The concentration of the water-repellent finishing agent was more important factor than curing temperature as finishing parameter. It was considered because the water-repellent finishing agent used in this study got to cure sufficiently at low temperature. Consequently, e-beam irradiation improved the washing durability of water-repellent finishing on the CR-PET fabrics.

  • In this study, characteristics of visible-light responsive photocatalyst Weltouch, especially VOCs reduction of visible-light responsive photocatalyst coated nylon/polyester composite fiber for vehicle interior parts and materials were evaluated. Visible-light responsive photocatalyst Weltouch was observed for both anatase phase and rutile phase. It is activated by light longer than 420nm. VOCs and formaldehyde generated from visible-light responsive photocatalyst treated nylon/polyester composite fiber were reduced confirmly. Visible-light responsive photocatalyst was firmly attached to the surface of nylon/polyester composite fiber without elimination even after 25 times repeated washing. And washing durability of nylon/polyester composite fiber confirmed the excellence that reduction effects of VOCs after repeated washing has appeared as much as before washing.

  • Combat uniforms require higher tensile and tear strength than civilian products, and applied infrared reflectance from the recently developed nighttime fluoroscopy equipment to ensure combatant survival at night. Unlike other uniforms for civilian use, combat uniforms require durability against laundering because they may not be supplied again, once originally provided. Therefore, this study examined the changes in strength and changes in infrared reflectance after multiple washing of combat uniforms. The experiment confirmed that the strength change after the washing of combat uniforms 15 times was maintained in the same manner as the result after washing five times. In the case of infrared reflectance, the difference in reflectance after multiple washing treatments was greater than that in the case where washing was not performed. Therefore, although the durability in the case of combat uniforms is strong, it is necessary to maintain a reflectance higher than a certain level through the development of materials and the development of dyes.

  • In this study, one of disadvantages is to improve the durability of natural dyeing. In order to enhance linkage of Chitosan or Linkage of between Chitosan and cotton fabrics, effect of increasing amount of Silane on Chitosan durability and possibility of using Chitosan as natural mordant were reviewed. After treatment of chitosan with silane, color effect is similar to dyeability used metal mordant. And the durability's washing fastness and air permeability as using chitosan with silane is better than treatment of metal mordant. Chitosan with silane can perform the natural mordant.

  • This study has been carried out for the antimicrobial effects of organic silicon quaternary ammonium salt with which cotton, polyester, and wool were treated respectively, using Esherichia coli and Proteus bulgaris which are experimental bacteria for clothing materials. As a results, the best antimicrobial effects of organic silicon quaternary ammonium salt came out from cotton ; the next form wool ; and lower from polyester. With the changes of the temperature, the antimicrobial effect with soaking time, there was no changes with cotton after 10 minutes passed. It seemed to have reacted entirely in the early stage. The longer the soaking duration was, the higher the effect from polyester was. The effect from wool was increased until 20 minutes, but decreased after 30 minutes. The optimal processing condition of cotton was in the condition of liquor ratio 40:1, concentration 0.5%, soaking time 5 minutes, and temperature 3$0^{\circ}C$ ; wool was 1.5%, 20 minutes, and 6$0^{\circ}C$ ; polyester was 2.0%, 30 minutes, and 3$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The changes of the effect by washing was as followings : The processing effect on cotton and wool appeared to be everlasting, since they had no changes by washing 10 times ; while, it was remarkablely decreased with polyester by washing only once, and was almost disappeared after washing 10 times, which means that polyester has no durability to washing.

  • In the process of long-term use of PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells), chemical degradation of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) occurs due to corrosion of stack elements and contamination of supply gas. In this study, we investigated whether chemically degraded MEA can be recovered by acid washing. The performance was measured and compared in a PEMFC cell after contamination with iron ions and washing with an aqueous sulfuric acid solution. The performance was reduced by about 25% by 0.5 ppm iron ion contamination, and 97.1% performance recovery was possible by washing of 0.15 M sulfuric acid. The membrane resistance was increased due to iron ion contamination of the polymer membrane, and the ionic conductivity was restored by washing the iron ions from the membrane while minimizing the loss of the electrode catalyst by washing with a low-concentration sulfuric acid aqueous solution. The possibility of solving the decrease in durability caused by chemical contamination of PEMFC MEA by the acid washing was confirmed.
