To promote greater acceptance and use of composite RCS systems, a two-bay two-story frame specimen with improved composite RCS joint details was tested in the laboratory under reversed cyclic loading. The test revealed superior seismic performance with stable load versus story drift response and excellent deformation capacity for an inter-story drift ratio up to 1/25. It was found that the failure process of the frame meets the strong-column weak-beam criterion. Furthermore, cracking inter-story drift ratio and ultimate inter-story drift ratio both satisfy the limitation prescribed by the design code. Additionally, inter-story drift ratios at yielding and peak load stage provide reference data for Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) approaches for composite RCS frames. An advantage over conventional reinforced concrete and steel moment frame systems is that the displacement ductility coefficient of the RCS frame system is much larger. To conclude, the test results prove that composite RCS frame systems perform satisfactorily under simulated earthquake action, which further validates the reliability of this innovative system. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS frame systems.
Current seismic design code is based on the assumption that the designed structures would be behaved inelastically during a severe earthquake ground motion. For this reason, seismic design forces calculated by seismic codes are much lower than the forces generated by design earthquakes which makes structures responding elastically. Present procedures for calculating seismic design forces are based on the use of elastic spectra reduced by a strength reduction factors known as "response modificaion factor". The effect of hysteretic behavior, as well as maximum ductility ratio and period on the inelastic strength demand is investigated. Special emphasis is given to the effects of the hysteretic characteristics such as strength degradation or pinching. Results indicate that inelastic strength demands are strongly dependent on level of inelastic deformation, period and hysteretic behavior.

Excessive torsional behavior of asymmetric building structures is observed to be the main cause of the poor seismic performance. Concepts of current design provisions for torsion are based on the assumption that the strength of the lateral load resisting elements can be adjusted without changing their stiffness. This paper investigates inelastic torsional effects of multi-story high rise residential building in Korea on increase of strength demand and ductility of members using some methods published in literature. The methods analyze the reduction of strength and member ductility resulting from torsional mechanisms. This study shows that use of these concepts control inelastic torsion during preliminary seismic design of multi-story building of irregular plans.
The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior and evaluate structural performance of columns in Ordinary Moment Resting Concrete Frames (OMRCF). For this purpose 3 story OMRCF building was designed and detailed in compliance to ACI 318 (1999). Only gravity load is considered for the design. It is important to note that details strongly relate to the structural performance. The 1st story columns in the 3 story building are considered in this study since 다lese columns shall resist the largest axial and lateral forces during an earthquate. Four test specimens were made for representing the upper part and lower part of exterior and interior columns. All specimens are two-third scale. Based on the test results this study estimates deformation, ductility, strength, and energy absorption capacities as well as plastic hinge length.
Beside the invaluable advancements in constructing more secure buildings, the post-earthquake inspections have reported considerable damages. In other words, the modern buildings satisfactorily decrease fatalities but the monetary impacts still mostly remain an unsolved concern of the stakeholders, the insurance companies and society together. Therefore, the fundamental target of the researches shifted from current force-based seismic design regulations to the Performance-Based earthquake engineering (PBEE). At the moment, some probabilistic approaches, such as PEER framework have been developed to predict the performance of building at any desired hazard levels. These procedures are so time-consuming, to which many details are needed to be assigned. It causes their usage to be limited. On that account, developing more straightforward methods seems indispensable. The main objective of the present paper is to adapt an equivalent static method in different damage states. Consequently, constant damage spectrums corresponding to different limit states, soil types, ductility and fundamental periods are plotted and tri-linear formulas are proposed for further applications. Moreover, the sensitivity of outcomes to the employed hysteresis model, ductility, viscous damping and site soil type is investigated. Finally, a case study building with moment-resisting R.C. frame is evaluated based on the both of new and current methods to ensure applicability of the proposed method.

Seismic evaluation of a 32-story reinforced concrete framed tube building is performed by checking damageability, safety, and toughness limit states. The evaluation is based on Standard 2800 (Iranian seismic code) which recommends equivalent lateral static force, modal superposition, or time history dynamic analysis methods to be applied. A three dimensional linearly elastic model checked by ambient vibration test results is used for the evaluation. Accelerograms of three earthquakes as well as linearly elastic design response spectra are used for dynamic analysis. Damageability is checked by considering story drift ratios. Safety is evaluated by comparing demands and capacities at the story and element force levels. Finally, toughness is studied in terms of curvature ductility of members. The paper explains the methodology selected and various aspects in detail.
