  • In this study, a state-of-the-art review on urban inundation simulation technology was presented summarizing major achievements and limitations, and future research recommendations and challenges. More than 160 papers published in major domestic academic journals since the 2000s were analyzed. After analyzing the core themes and contents of the papers, the status of technological development was reviewed according to simulation methodologies such as physically-based and data-driven approaches. In addition, research trends for application purposes and advances in overseas and related fields were analyzed. Since more than 60% of urban inundation research used Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), developing new modeling techniques for detailed physical processes of dual drainage was encouraged. Data-based approaches have become a new status quo in urban inundation modeling. However, given that hydrological extreme data is rare, balanced research development of data and physically-based approaches was recommended. Urban inundation analysis technology, actively combined with new technologies in other fields such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and metaverse, would require continuous support from society and holistic approaches to solve challenges from climate risk and reduce disaster damage.

  • With the recent advancement of 4th Industrial Revolution technology, transportation systems are generating large amounts of mobility data related to the individual movement trajectories of vehicles and people. There are many constraints on utilizing mobility data containing personal information. Thus, in South Korea, the processing and generation of pseudonymized information and the analysis and utilization of this information have been managed in a dual manner by applying separate agencies and technologies through the revision of the Data 3 Act and the enactment of the Data Basic Act. However, this dual approach fails to securely support the entire data lifecycle and suffers from inefficiencies in terms of processing time and cost. Therefore, to compensate for the problems of the existing Expert Data Combination System and Data Safety Zone, this study proposes an Integrated Data Safety Zone Framework that integrates and unifies the process of generating, processing, analyzing, and utilizing mobility data. The integrated process for data processing was redesigned, and common requirements and core technologies were derived. The result is an architecture for a next-generation Integrated Data Safety Zone system that can manage and utilize the entire life cycle of mobility data at one stop.

  • Extending the success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), the spaceborne measurement of precipitation by Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is initiated. The GPM consists of a core satellite which will have a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and a constellation of small satellites equipped with microwave radiometers. The GPM is inherently a global program. Responding to the GPM plan, many other nations are much interested in participating in the GPM team or simply utilizing GPM products aiming at the development of meteorological technology. Korea can fully function its role if Korea is selected as a CAL/VAL site for the GPM because Korea maintains a well-established dense rain gauge network (AWS), precipitation radars, and the Haenam super site for surface observation. In this feasibility study, the necessities of the GPM project in the context of academical and social backgrounds and associated international and domestic activities are investigated. And GPM-related core technologies and application areas are defined. As a result, it is found that GPM will represent a great opportunity for us because of its ability to provide not only much enhanced three-hourly global rain products but also very useful tools for the enhancement of weather forecasting capabilities, management of water resources, development and implementation of monitoring techniques for severe weather phenomena, agricultural managements and climate application. Furthermore, rain retrieval and CAL/VAL technologies obtained during the involvement in the international GPM project will serve as basic knowledges to run our own geostationary satellite program.

  • The roles of the characters of 3D animation Toystory3, which was released in 2010 and achieved worldwide success, can be classified into typical, simple and easy-to-understand roles such as hero, villain, princess, and assistant. However, the process, in which each character's role is finally recognized by the audience, is embodied in a very colorful and exquisite manner and makes the curiosity of the audience continue effectively. The stream of the diverse role changes of the characters of Toystory3 is represented through "visual rhythm of the lighting design" and such rhythm can be confirmed most clearly in the digital colorscript stage. This researcher analyzed the characters' role changes in the work based on Propp's folktale character analysis theory, and extracted the core scenes that lead to inference, doubt, performance, reinforcement by character in order to grasp how the audience gasps major characters' role changes. The visual differences of the lighting design, which the four core scenes of each character show, were represented in graph and analyzed, and the results showed that the changes that one character has constituted rhythmical, visual contrast gradually and the rhythms of each independent character achieve visual contrast and harmony each other like the voice part of polyphony. This researcher calls this "the visual counterpoint of character's changing" and derives the conclusion that a dual visual counterpoint is hidden in the character production of the full-length animation Toystory3. Along with this, this researcher proposes the production of full-length animation that actively utilizes constructive aesthetics.

  • In this study, an efficient analytical model for the dynamic analysis of tall buildings with a shear wall-frame structural system has been proposed. A shear wall-frame structural system usually consists of a core wall showing flexural behavior and a frame presenting shear behavior. Therefore, the deformed shape of the shear wall-frame structural system is shown by the combination of flexural mode and shear mode. These characteristics should be considered when an efficient analytical model is developed. To this end, the effect of shear wall and frame on the dynamic behavior of a tall building with a dual system has been separately investigated. In this study, the structural characteristics of a separated individual shear wall model and the frame model without shear wall has been evaluated. In order to consider the effect of the shear wall in the frame model without shear wall, a rigid body was used instead of the shear wall. Each equivalent model for the separated shear wall part and frame part has been independently developed and two equivalent models were then combined to create an efficient analytical model for tall buildings with a shear wall-frame structural system. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method, time history analyses of tall buildings with a shear wall-frame system were performed. Based on analytical results, it has been confirmed that the proposed method can provide accurate results, requiring significantly reduced computational time and memory.

  • This study set out to investigate the adaptation process and experiential structure of those children who went through sexual abuse by looking into their inner worlds in order to understand what kind of meaning sexual abuse had on them. For that, the investigator conducted in-depth interviews with 13 children aged 8~16 who lived at the shelter after experiencing sexual abuse. The methodology of Grounded Theory by Strauss and Corbin(1990) was used to analyze raw data. The analysis results indicate that the core theme of the adaptation process among the children living at the shelter after sexually abused by kin and kith was "hoping to appear the same as others." According to the results, the core phenomenon was "blaming the victims." The causal conditions include "broken families," "antihuman sexual abuse," "making sexual abuse a public issue," and "the trap of the family." The contextual conditions include "the chain named family," "family as the last fortress" and "structural enforcement of silence." The intervening strategies was "dual emotions toward the shelter." The action/interaction strategies include "aftermath of violence" and "trying to escape." The consequences were "preparation for the future" and "uncertain future." The identified stages include the confusion, keeping the secret, leaking the secret to others, intervention by others, social support and challenge and adjustment stage. The three identified types were "withdrawal and avoidance," "settling down in reality" and "overcoming and challenging." Based on the analysis results, discussions were made about the social welfare plans and intervention strategies in the conclusion.

  • With the recent advance in the performance of mobile phones, many effective interfaces for them have been proposed. This paper implements a hand-gesture-and-vision-based interface on a mobile phone. This paper assumes natural interaction scenario when user holds a mobile phone in a hand and sees the other hand's palm through mobile phone's camera. Then, a virtual object is rendered on his/her palm and reacts to hand and finger movements. Since the implemented interface is based on hand familiar to humans and does not require any additional sensors or markers, user freely interacts with the virtual object anytime and anywhere without any training. The implemented interface worked at 5 fps on mobile phone (Galaxy S2 having a dual-core processor).

  • To the human being, the space as the objective for fundamental thought called 'Being', and the space as the place for actual experience containing 'Life and Experience', have coexisted. Such dual characteristics owned by the space have come to the present creating various spatial viewpoints. As for the space as the objective for various thoughts and interpretations, its emphasis is nowadays being moved to the existence from such being. There is the event in the core of such change. Human's recognition for the space is originated from the observed events, which appears as an immense meaning, as it 'is accumulated as the experience. Therefore, the importance of the event in another viewpoint thinking the space is becoming bigger. This research has tried to grasp the tendency for the place-orientation by grasping the meaning owned by the event through the course that the viewpoint for such space has been changed. This research put its focus on clarifying the relationship between the place and event that are brought into relief by tracking down the transitional process of the viewpoint of space in the history of Occidental philosophy. Through this process, this research came to have a grip on the relationship in which a sense of place obviously stands out in bold relief as a result of an event, an emblem of an event, condition of an event, and as an event itself. Such four patterns are not mutually individual phenomenon, but form a discourse on modern space by traversing each other crisscross.

  • Four programs, i.e. TRMM, ADEOS2, ASTER, and ALOS are going on in Japanese Earth Observation programs. TRMM and ASTER are operating well, and TRMM operation will be continued to 2009. ADEOS2 was failed, but AMSR-E on Aqua is operating. ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) was successfully launched on $24^{th}$ Jan. 2006. ALOS carries three instruments, i.e., PRISM (Panchromatic Remote Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping), AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer), and PALSAR (Phased Array L band Synthetic Aperture Radar). PRISM is a 3 line panchromatic push broom scanner with 2.5m IFOV. AVNIR-2 is a 4 channel multi spectral scanner with 10m IFOV. PALSAR is a full polarimetric active phased array SAR. PALSAR has many observation modes including full polarimetric mode and scan SAR mode. After the unfortunate accident of ADEOS2, JAXA still have plans of Earth observation programs. Next generation satellites will be launched in 2008-2012 timeframe. They are GOSAT (Greenhouse Gas Observation Satellite), GCOM-W and GCOM-C (ADEOS-2 follow on), and GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) core satellite. GOSAT will carry 2 instruments, i.e. a green house gas sensor and a cloud/aerosol imager. The main sensor is a Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and covers 0.76 to 15 ${\mu}m$ region with 0.2 to 0.5 $cm^{-1}$ resolution. GPM is a joint project with NASA and will carry two instruments. JAXA will develop DPR (Dual frequency Precipitation Radar) which is a follow on of PR on TRMM. Another project is EarthCare. It is a joint project with ESA and JAXA is going to provide CPR (Cloud Profiling Radar). Discussions on future Earth Observation programs have been started including discussions on ALOS F/O.

  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a useful rapid prototyping technique for the manufacture of three dimensional (3D) solid objects directly from a scanning data. A new approach called a Selective Multi-Laser Sintering (SMLS) system has been developed at Korea Institute Machinery & Materials (KIMM) as an industrial type SFFS. This SMLS machine is built with a frame, heaters, nitrogen supply part, laser system. This system uses the dual laser and 3D scanner made in $Solutionix^{TM}$ to improve the precision and speed for large objects. The three-dimensional solid objects are made of polyamide powder. The investigation on each part of SMLS system is performed to determine the proper theirs design and the effect of experimental parameters on making the 3D objects. The temperature of the system has a great influence on sintering the polymer. Because the stability of the powder temperature prevents the deformation of each layer, the controls of the temperature in both the system and the powders are very important during the process. Therefore, we simulated the temperature distribution of build room using the temperature analysis with ANSYS program. Selected radiant heater is used to raise temperature of powder to melting point temperature. The laser parameters such as scan spacing, scan speed, laser power and laser delay time affect the production the 3D objects too. The combination of the slow scan speed and the high laser power shows the good results without the layer curling. The work is under way to evaluate the effect of experimental parameters on process and to produce the various objects. We are going to experiment continuously to improve the size accuracy and surface roughness.
