This study was conducted to obtain the basic information on the burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) curing methods. The effects of the three kinds of curing methods on the dry weight losses during curing, chemical contents and physical properties of cured leaves, and organoleptic and smoking qualities were observed. The dry weight losses during curing was the highest in the stalk curing, and the lowest in the conventional priming. The longer the curing periods was, the more the loss of dry weight. The percent of the excessive dried leaves was high and the price per kilogram was low in the conventional priming. The chemical contents and the physical properties of the cured leaves in the conventional priming were similar to those of yellowing or browning stage of curing. But, the chemical contents and the physical properties of the cured leaves in the stalk curing were comparable to those of the air curing. The smoking quality was the best in the stalk curing.
This study was been conducted to determine chemical characteristics of soils in the major districts cultivating flue-cured tobacco plant. Also native soil productivities were measured by means of bioassay planting tobacco plant without fertilizer at 87 selected lolls through pot and field experiments. Inorganic nutrient in soils affecting the dry weight of tobacco leaves cultivated in the field were investigated. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Among soil chemical characteristics, pH, $NO_3$-N, $NH_4$-N , $P_2O_5$, and Mg Influenced significantly the dry weight of tobacco loaves In pot experiment, whole In the field experiments, pH, $NO_3$-N, $NO_3$-N+$NH_4$-N, and Ca had influence. 2. Correlation coefficients between soil chemical characteristics and dry weight of tobacco leaves were higher in pot experiment than field. The results revealed that soil morphological characteristics might more close influence on dry weight of tobacco leaves than chemical characteristics. 3. For prediction of dry weight (Productivity) of tobacco leaves without fertilizer multiple regression analysis were introduced using troll chemical characteristics. A combination of pH, $NO_3$-N, and Ca was very reliable for prediction of productivity as equation. y=5.02+18.07$x_1$ +2.61$x_2$ +5.36$x_3$ R=0.444** Where $x_1$ : pH, $x_2$ : $NO_3$-N, $x_3$:Ca
This study had been conducted to determine morphological characteristics of soil in the major districts cultivating flue-cured tobacco plant. Also native soil productivities were measured by means of bioassay planting tobacco plant without fertilizer at 87 selected soils through field experiment. Morphological characteristics of troll affecting the dry weight of tobacco leaves cultivated in the field were investigated Among soil morphological characteristics, topograpy, slope, topsoil depth, soil depth, and soil texture had influenced with high significant on the dry weight of tobacco leaves. For prediction of dry weight (productivity) of tobacco leaves without fertilizer , multiple regression analysis were introduced using soul morphological characteristics. A combination of topography, slope, topsoil depth, and soil texture was very reliable for prediction of productivity. The regression equation was y = -16.88 -14, 34$X_1$ +20.43$X_2$ +50.21$X_3$ -7.54$X_4$ +13.45$X_5$ R = $0.670^{**}$ Where $X_1$ : Topography $X_2$ : Slope $X_3$ : Topsoil Depth $X_4$ : Soil Depth $X_5$ : Soil Texture
Experiments were conducted to evaluated the sucker control efficiency of several suckercides and their combinations for flue-cured tobacco in Korea. In 1999, Flumetralin(Prime+, P+), Butralin(B), Fatty alcohol(FA, n-decanol 85%), pottasium salt of maleic hydrazide(MH), tank mix of MH with P+ (MH·P+), and another tank mix of MH with FA(MH·FA) were applied after topping, respectively, then sucker number and sucker dry weight were investigated on the 30th and 50th day from treatment. Sucker number and dry weight were significantly lowered by P+, B, FA and MH·P+ applications compared with those of MH and MH·FA for both investigated periods. A significant reduction in sucker number and dry weight was observed in P+, B, and MH·P+ applications. FA treatment was not so much effective in sucker control as P+. In 1999 and 2000, several suckercides and tank mixes of their combinations were applied first at button stage and second after topping, respectively, to compare the effects of sucker control on yield, price index and chemical components of cured leaves. Compared to the standard method of FA 30x at button stage followed by MH40x application after topping(FA 30x + MH 40x), sucker number and dry weight decreased by [FA 30x (or P+ 1%] or [FA 30x(or B 1.5%) + MH 60x·B 1.5%] treatments, even at reduced MH levels. But yield, price index and chemical components of cured leaves were not differed among treatments.
This study was carried out to investigate the changes of dehydration process and quality of cured leaves with crushed midribs and cut of the yellowed leaves during drying stage of flue-cured tobacco. The crushed midribs of yellowed leaf dried out before raising the highest temperature of midrib drying stage and reduced the curing time by about 20 hours. However, the cut of yellowed leaf was not affected the curing time and dehydration process during drying stage of flue-curing due to a problem with the cut leaves packing excessively in the curing container. The cured weight yield was increased with crushed midrib and cut leaves, and nicotine and sugar contents of cured leaves and quality in terms of dollars per kilogram were decreased with crushed midrib and cut leaves.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of fertilization level, additional dressing time and form of nitrogen on the growth and formation of Alkaloid in flue-cured tobacco. The results are abstracted as follows. Length and width of harvested leaves, area of a leaf, leaf area per plant, number of harvested leaves, weight of a leaf, and leaf weight of a plant were larger in the $NO_3$-N plot than $NH_4$-N plot. Length, width and area of the middle leaves increased by additional dressing on 7 days before topping, but the dry weight Per unit leaf area of those was decreased. Leaf shape was broaden in additional dressing plots in comparison with 100% of basal dressing plot, but there is no difference among the additional dressing plots. And the smallest leaf shape index was shown at upper leaves in 100% of basal dressing Plot. Leaf weight of a Plaint was the highest in 12kg/10a Plot among $NO_3$-N form and in 12kg/10a plot among $NH_4$-N form. Total Alkaloid content was higher in $NH_4$-N plot between fertilization forms, and highest in 15kg/10a plot among fertilization levels and at the position of middle and upper leaves in the plot of 7 days before topping among additional dressing times.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different soil moisture contents on the growth and chemical constituents of burley tobacco and on the protein pattern in tobacco leaf. Height, stem diameter, and largest leaf length of tobacco droughted from 45 to 60 days after transplanting was not recovered by rewatered amount of water supply from 60 to 75 days after transplanting, but leaf width enlarged. Dry weight per unit leaf area and total nitrogen content showed high values in low soil moisture, but total alkaloid contents were not different according to soil moisture contents. Soil moisture content didn't effect on the protein pattern of middle and upper leaves, but lower leaves showed the mild color and fewer numbers of the protein bands than those of midd1e and upper leaves.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of plant density and urea supplement on the yield, quality, value and total nitrogen, alkaloid contents of burley tobacco leaves. The results were as fellows; As urea supplement were increased from 0kg/10a to 50kg/10a, yield, total alkaloid, total nitrogen of cured leaf were significantly increased. The lower plant density levels also increased dry weight and leaf area per plant. Price of cured leaves were not influenced by plant density and amounts of urea supplemented. The effects of plant density and urea supplement on the number of leaves were not detected.
This experiment was conducted with three varieties (Hicks, Burley 21, Sohyang) and cropping systems (Improved mulching, Mulching, Non mulching) of NC 2326 to analyze growth kinetics by means of growth function involving its velocity and accelerated velocity. The basic growth data were obtained by harvest method at interval of ten days from transplanting to hundred days and analyzed by , regression equation, determinant of matrix, and differentiation. The plot of total dry weight of leaves, stalk and roots per a plant vs. time forms a sigmoid curve and its function fitted logistic satisfactorily. Tobacco plant grows at an accelerated velocity. And growth velocity, symmetric about an inflection point, is proportional to biomass attained and to the difference between biomass attained and the maximum, and to the decrease according to the biomass. Of varieties and cropping systems, the most maximum velocity was 9.58g per day per plant in mulching cultivation of NC 2326 and maximum accelerated velocity was 264mg per $day^2$ per plant in Burley 21.
Growth response and evapotranspiration of tobacco as to each soil moisture condition treated with different height of ground water table such as 30cm, 100cm, 170cm, and 230cm were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Soil water potential in the rhizosphere (25cm depth from surface) treated with ground water table (G.W.T) of 230 cm was less than -6.5 bar at 60 days after transplanting. 2. Dry weight of leaves per plant was the highest in the pot treated with 100 cm G.W.T and was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T.. Leaves/Stem ratio of dry weight was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T. This would show that extension of leaves as compared with elongation of stem was suppressed. .3. In the roster stress condition of 230 cm G.W.T., extension of leaves was continued until the latter growth stage, Relative growth rate of leaf area per plant of the pot with 30 cm G.W.T. was the highest through all growth period after fixation of G.W.7., but owing to lower density of leaf, the dry weight of leaves per plant was less rather than that of the pot with 170 cm G.W.T. at 64 days after transplanting. 4. The highest evapotranspiration per plant per day was shown at the 45th day after transplanting in the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. and at 60 days in the pots with 170cm and 230cm G.W.T respectively. 5. In the soil moisture conditions with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T., evapotranspiration per plant per hour was much higher in the daytime that at night as well as in clear day than in rain-cloudy day owing to loner relative humidity , but in the water stress condition with 230 cm G.W.T., that was much lower. 6. Total evapotranspiration per plant during the whole growing period of 64 days was in order of 30cm > 100 cm > 170 cm > 230 cm G.W.T.. Total evapotranspiration for 34 days after fixation of G.W.T was much higher at night than in the daytime in case of water stress conditions i.e 170cm and 230cm G.W.T. but in normal condition of the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. that was much higher in the daytime than at night. 7. Leaf water potential of the 3rd and 6th leaf from top at 64 days after transplanting was in order of 100cm > 30 cm > 170cm > 230cm G.W.T. The reason why leaf water potential in the pot with 30cm was less than that in the pot with 100cm G.W.T. would be the abnormal turgidity with low density of cell substrates by the excess water absorption in the pot with 30cm G.W.T..
