Design and Structural Safety Evaluation of Transfer Cask for Dry Storage System of PWR Spent Nuclear Fuel

  • A transfer cask serves as the container for transporting and handling canisters loaded with spent nuclear fuels from light water reactors. This study focuses on a cylindrical transfer cask, standing at 5,300 mm with an external diameter of 2,170 mm, featuring impact limiters on the top and bottom sides. The base of the cask body has an openable/closable lid for loading canisters with storage modules. The transfer cask houses a canister containing spent nuclear fuels from lightweight reactors, serving as the confinement boundary while the cask itself lacks the confinement structure. The objective of this study was to conduct a structural analysis evaluation of the transfer cask, currently under development in Korea, ensuring its safety. This evaluation encompasses analyses of loads under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions, adhering to NUREG-2215. Structural integrity was assessed by comparing combined results for each load against stress limits. The results confirm that the transfer cask meets stress limits across normal, off-normal, and accident conditions, establishing its structural safety.

  • When spent fuel assemblies from the reactor of nuclear power plants(NPPs) are transported, the assemblies are exposed to short-term operations that can affect the peak cladding temperature of spent fuel assemblies. Therefore, it needs to perform the analysis of heat transfer on spent fuel dry cask during the operation. For 3 dimensional computational fluid dynamnics(CFD) simulation, it is proposed that the short-term operation is divided into three processes: Wet, dry, and vacuum drying condition. The three processes have different heat transfer mode and medium. Metal transportation cask, which is Korea Radioactive Waste Agency(KORAD)'s developing cask, is evaluated by the methods proposed in this work. During working hours, the boiling at wet process does not occur in the cask and the peak cladding temperatures of all processes remain below $400^{\circ}C$. The maximum peak cladding temperature is $173.8^{\circ}C$ at vacuum drying process and the temperature rise of dry, and vacuum drying process occurs steeply.

  • Water condensate accumulated on the surface of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger significantly affects its thermal and hydraulic performances. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of condensate retention on the air-side heat transfer performance and flow friction for various flow and geometric conditions. Total of twelve samples of slit and plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers are tested under dry and wet conditions. The thermal fluid measurements are made using a psychrometric calorimeter. Frontal air velocity varies in the range from 0.7 m/s to 1.5 m/s. Using the experimental data, presented are heat transfer coefficients in terms of Colburn j-factors and friction factors, and these data are compared with the existing correlations.

  • This article deal with an overview of food waste treatment methods in Korea. Garbage trucks are operated manually by garbage workers who pick up the food wastes after food waste is placed in plastic bags by the road sides. However, there are a lot of problems such as, the smell from the split bags and the leachate, the loss of much energy and the complaints regarding the establishment new rubbish tips from the residents in the surrounding area. It also highlights our society's waste of resources. Although the new pneumatic waste transfer system or the dry method seem to have improved some of the environmental conditions, it still bears some problems, for example, the lack of reuse and recycling of resources and the economic problems. We have been analysed the advantages and disadvantages between the existing food waste system and the pneumatic waste transfer system. And the dry method and disposer were discussed. The results will indicate how the disposer can improve more than the existing systems and will provide the evidence to support.

물결형 슬릿핀이 장착된 핀-관 열교환기의 습표면 성능 실험 (Wet surface performance test of fin-tube heat exchangers with slit-wavy fin)

  • In this study, the wet surface heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the heat exchanger with slit-wavy fin were measured. Four sample cores of two or three row with fins of 12 fpi or 16 fpi were tested. Tests were conducted in a closed loop wind tunnel, where the heat exchanger was mounted at 45 degree inclination angle. The wet surface heat transfer coefficient was reduced following the procedure given in ARI 420-81. During the course, new definitions of the $\varepsilon$-NTU applicable to enthalpy driving system were introduced. The wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately equal to the dry surface values. However, the friction factors were approximately 120% to 170% higher than those of the dry surface. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor of the wet surface increased as the relative humidity increased, fin pitch decreased, and the number of row decreased, although the difference was not large.

  • Maintaining proper membrane humidity is crucial to ensure optimal operation of a PEMFC system. A gas-to-gas membrane humidifier is popular technology for external humidification of PEMFC reactant gases. Characteristics of heat and water transfer in shell-and-tube Nafion membrane humidifiers has been experimentally investigated for various dry side inlet temperature of membrane humidifier. The results show that heat flux decreases linearly with dry side inlet temperature of membrane humidifier. The water flux through the membrane varies nonlinearly with the temperature elevation.

  • Dry sliding wear resistance of DLC coated silicon disk with different surface roughness has been evaluated using a ball-on-disk sliding tester. It was found that the transfer layer formed on steel ball produced a low friction regime and the formation of transfer layer was more active with increasing the substrate surface roughness. Wear life of DLC coating was increased as increasing the real area of contact.

  • 유리 표면에 방사성동위원소 $^{14}C$를 고착시키고 문지름 시험을 통해 시험용지별 전이 인자와 표면 형상을 관찰하여 방사성동위원소 누설 점검을 위한 건식 및 습식 문지름 시험법을 연구하였다. 건식 문지름 시험법은 티슈 용지가 종이 필터를 대체 가능할 정도로 2배 높은 전이 인자를 보였고, 습식 문지름 시험법은 종이 필터 용지가 티슈 용지에 비하여 3배 높은 전이 인자를 보였다. 일반적으로 누설 점검을 위해 종이 필터를 사용하고 있지만 건식 문지름 시험법에서 티슈 용지가 대안이 될 수 있음을 보였다.

폴리디메틸실록산(PDMS)을 이용한 그래핀 전사법 개선을 위한 계면처리 연구 (Improvement of PDMS graphene transfer method through surface modification of target substrate)

  • 화학기상증착법(CVD)을 이용하여 Cu-foil 위에 합성된 대면적의 단층 그래핀(Graphene)을 폴리머 탄성융합체 PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane)를 이용하여 건식으로 전사하는 기술을 연구하였다. 이때, $UV/O_3$처리를 통해 목표 기판(target substrate)의 표면 개질을 변화시켜 그래핀의 손상이 최소화되로록 그래핀을 전사하였다. 이 과정을 반복 실행하여 그래핀을 다층(1~4 layers)으로 $SiO_2/Si$기판 위에 적층하였으며, 전사된 다층 그래핀의 품질평가를 위하여 광투과율과 면저항의 변화를 측정하였다.
