  • In this paper, through a series of comparative experiments, effects of two different cure processing methods, cocure and precure, on the mechanical properties of honeycomb core materials for aircraft applications are considered. Mass of moisture accumulated into the closed cells of the sandwich panel specimen from the measured mass of moisture diffused to the full saturation state into the elements(skin, adhesive layer, Nomex honeycomb), consisting the honeycomb sandwich specimen has been calculated. Water reservoir of 70$\^{C}$ was used to have specimens absorb moisture to see the influence of moisture absorbed into sandwich panel on its mechanical properties. For the repair condition holding for 2 hours at 177$\^{C}$(350℉) temperature, a pressure due to the vapor expansion in each cell of the sandwich panel, which may result in the local separation of the interface between laminated skin and the surface of the honeycomb, has been estimated by vapor pressure-temperature relation from the thermodynamic steam table and compared to the pressure from the ideal gas state equation. The bonding strengths of the laminated skins on the flat surface of the Nomex honeycomb have been compared by the flatwise tension test and climbing drum peel test performed at room temperature for dry, wet and wet-repair specimens, respectively.

  • The marine structures with sea water cooling system always expose to the oceanic atmosphere. Therefore, the protection of the equipments is very important. To investigate the effectiveness of advanced composite materials for the application in offshore environments, the tensile test, hardness test, undercutting property test, permeance test and the friction and wear test were carried out by using various applicable coating materials. The main results obtained can be summarized as follows; 1. The micro-hardness of the Archcoat 502B showed the highest value. 2. The coefficient of friction of the Rigspray coating at the speed of 2.21m/sec showed the lowest value, and that of the Archcoat 502B coating at 1.08m/sec and 0.18m/sec indicated the lowest values. 3. The wear mass at the speed of 0.18m/sec and 1.08m/sec in dry condition showed the smallest values. 4. The Archcoat 502B coating is fitted to the dynamic instruments in the range of low speed and middle speed. Rigspray coating is fitted to the dynamic instruments in the range of high speed. 5. The wear mass of five kinds of coating materials at the range of low speed was very small, and those of the Archcoat S02B, Archcoat 402B and Rigspray coating at high speed range were quitely smaller than those of the Modified Epoxy and Tar Epoxy.

Hydrodynamic Response of Spar with Single and Double Heave Plates in Regular Waves

  • The motion response of floating structures should be adequately low to permit the operation of rigid risers along with dry well heads. Though Spar platforms have low heave responses under lower sea state, could become unacceptable in near resonance region of wave periods. Hence the hydrodynamic response, heave in particular, must be examined to ensure that it is minimized. To reduce heave motions, external damping devices are introduced and one such effective damping device is heave plate. Addition of heave plate can provide additional viscous damping and additional added mass in the heave direction which influence the heave motion. The present study focuses on the influence of heave plate on the hydrodynamic responses of Classic Spar in regular waves. The experimental investigation has been carried out on a 1:100 scale model of Spar with single and double heave plates in regular waves. Numerical investigation has been carried out to derive the hydrodynamic responses using ANSYS AQWA. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical simulation and found to be in good agreement. The influence of disk diameter ratio, wave steepness, pretension in the mooring line and relative spacing between the plates on the hydrodynamic responses of Spar are evaluated and presented.

Spirulina platensis의 옥외배양 최적화 및 오염생물 구제 (Optimization of Outdoor Cultivation of Spirulina platensis and Control ofContaminant Organisms)

  • Outdoor cultivation of cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis was carried out for 40 days in a batch mode. A half concentration of the SOT based on the underground water was used as culture medium. Working volume was 5.7 tons with 0.2 m depth. During cultivation, mean water temperature, DO and light intensity were all in proper conditions for the S. platensis growth. The adjustment of pH to over 10 with Na2CO3 and addition of the 1.5% natural salt were very effective to delete contaminant organisms, Chlamydomonas moewusii and Chlorella minutissima occurred one after the other in the culture. The mean productivity of the biomass based on the dry cell weight from 14 to 25 days, after the contaminants were deleted, was 7.8 g ·m–2· d–1, which was relatively high productivity in that a half concentration of the SOT was used for the culture. Underground water used in the culture minimized contaminants invasion and addition of the 1.5% natural salt was effective to delete contaminants as well as acted as mineral supplement in outdoor cultivation of S. platensis. Harvesting using the floating activity of S. platensis was effective from mass floating in day time after overnight without agitation and illumination.

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the evaporation heat transfer for refrigerant R-134a flowing in a plate and shell heat exchanger. The data are useful in designing more compact and effective evaporators for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Two vertical counterflow channels were formed in the exchanger. The R-134a flows up in one channel exchanging heat with the hot water flowing down in the other channel. The effects of the average heat flux, mass flux, saturation temperature and vapor quality were examined in detail. The present data show that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient increases with the vapor quality. A rise in the refrigerant mass flux causes an increase in the $h_r$ value. A rise in the average imposed heat flux causes an increase in the $h_r$, value at the low quality. Finally, at a higer refrigerant saturation temperature the $h_r$, value is found to be lower.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus, and lipid production from a swine wastewater by Botryococcus braunii UTEX 572 in an outdoor photobioreactor. B. braunii successfully predominated in competition with bacteria and other algae, especially Oscillatoria, which were grown spontaneously in a secondary-treated swine wastewater, under the conditions of incubation temperature at $25^{\circ}C$ and increased inoculum amount at 287mg/l. There was a significant relationship between dry weight of B. braunii and absorbance of culture solution at 680mn(r2=0.967), suggesting that the latter is as good as the former commonly used for the measurement of algal biomass which is considerably time-consuming. The removal rates of COD, TOC, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus from the swine wastewater were 33.2$\pm$2.6% and 32.8$\pm$3.2, respectively, which showing no different between them. These results suggested that the mass cultivation of B. braunii in an outdoor photobioreactor could be used for the advanced treatment of swine wastewater and lipid production.

한국남서해역 표층퇴적물 중의 와편모조류 시스트 분포에 영향을 미치는 해양환경요인 (Marine Environmental Characteristics on the Dinoflagellate Cysts Distribution in Surface Sediments in the Southwest Sea, Korea)

  • Marine environmental characteristics on the dinoflagellate cysts distribution in surface sediment of the southwest sea of Korea were investigated from 21 stations in September 2003, and 36 stations in June, 2004. The water mass characteristics indicated that the southwest sea of Korea is characterized by various oceanographic conditions due to coastal waters of Korea and China. The Tsushima warm currents and the cold bottom water of the Yellow Sea. Mud contents and chlorophyll a concentrations were higher in central region such as, Namhaedo, Yeosu and Goheung coast than in western region such as, Wando, Haenam and Jindo coast in the South Sea of Korea. A total of 35 taxa of dinoflagellate cysts were identified representing 21 genera, 33 species, 2 unidentified species. Cyst abundance ranged from 13 to 527 cysts $g-dry^{-1}$, showing higher abundance in the coastal areas than in western region of the South Sea of Korea. From the result of the PCA analysis, the distribution of dinoflagellate cysts was not only related to the different water masses which appeared in the southwestern sea but also to physical and biological parameters such as water temperature, light, surface sediment faces and phytoplankton biomass.

Simulation and Model Validation of a Pneumatic Conveying Drying for Wood Dust Particles

  • Purpose: The simulation model of a pneumatic conveying drying (PCD) for sawdust was developed and verified with the experiments. Method: The thermal behavior and mass transfer of a PCD were modeled and investigated by comparing the experimental results given by a reference (Kamei et al. 1952) to validate the model. Momentum, energy and mass balance, one dimensional first order ordinary differential equations, were coded and solved into Matlab V. 7.1.0 (2009). Results: The simulation results showed that the moisture content reduced from 194% to 40% (dry basis), air temperature decreased from $512^{\circ}C$ to $128^{\circ}C$ with the particle residence time of 0.7 seconds. The statistical indicators, root mean square error and R-squared, were calculated to be 0.079, and 0.998, respectively, between the measured and predicted values of moisture content. The relative error between the measured and predicted values of the final pressured drop, air temperature, and air velocity were only 8.96%, 0.39% and 1.05% respectively. Conclusions: The predicted moisture content, final temperature, and pressure drop values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The developed model can be used for design and estimation of PCD system for drying of wood dust particles.

인간 Glucagon-like Peptide-1 변이체의 재조합 생산 (Recombinant production of human glucagon-like peptide-1 mutant)

  • Human Glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone that promotes secretion of insulin. In order to eliminate the formation of the soluble aggregate, Ala19 in GLP-1 was substituted with Thr, resulting in a GLP-1 mutant GLP-1A19T. The gene synthesis of GLP-1A19T and the fusion of 6-lysine tagged ubiquitin gene were accomplished by using the overlap extension polymerase chain reaction. The ubiquitin fused GLP-1A19T (K6UbGLP-1A19T) is expressed as form of inclusion body with little formation of the soluble aggregation in recombinant E. coli. In order to produce K6UbGLP-1A19T in large amounts, fed-batch fermentation was carried out in a pH-stat feeding strategy. Maximum dry cell weight of 87.7 g/L and 20.4% of specific K6UbGLP-1A19T content were obtained. Solid-phase refolding using a cation exchanger was carried out to renature K6UbGLP-1A19T. The refolded K6UbGLP-1A19T aggregated little and was released GLP-1A19T by on-column cleavage with ubiquitin-specific protease-1. The molecular mass of GLP-1A19T showed an accurate agreement with its theoretical molecular mass.

The Origin of the Dispersion in the Size Distribution of Red Early-Type Galaxies

  • The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ < 10.3 or $M_r$ >-19.5) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ > 11.4 or $M_r$ <-21.4) are by dynamical mass. At fixed mass and luminosity, the sizes of low-mass galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 10.45 and $M_r$~-19.8) are relatively less sensitive to their colors, color gradients and axis ratios. On the other hand, the sizes of intermediate-mass (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 10.85 and $M_r$~-20.4) and high-mass (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 11.25 and $M_r$~-21.0) galaxies significantly depend on those parameters, in the sense that larger red early-type galaxies have bluer colors, more negative color gradients (bluer outskirts) and smaller axis ratios. These results indicate that the sizes of intermediate- and high-mass red early-type galaxies are significantly affected by their recent minor mergers or rotations. Major dry mergers also may have influenced on the size growth of high-mass red early-type galaxies.
