The evaporation characteristics of single and multicomponent droplets hanging at the tip of a quartz fiber are studied experimentally at the different environmental conditions under normal gravity. Heptane and Hexadecane are selected as two fuels with different evaporation rates and boiling temperatures. At the first step, the evaporation of single component droplet of both fuels has been examined separately. At the next step the evaporation of several blends of these two fuels, as a binary component droplet, has been studied. The temperature and pressure range is selected between 400 and 700 $^{\circ}C$, and 0.1 and 2.5 MPa, respectively. High temperature environment has been provided by a falling electrical furnace. The initial diameter of droplet was in range of 1.1 and 1.3 mm. The evaporation process was recorded by a high speed CCD camera. The results of binary droplet evaporation show the three staged evaporation. In the the first stage the more volatile component evaporates. The droplet temperature rises after an almost non evaporating period and in the third stage a quasi linear evaporation takes place. The evaporation of the binary droplet at low pressure is accompanied with bubble formation and droplet fragmentation and leads to incomplete microexplosion. The component concentration affects the evaporation behavior of the first two stages. The bubble formation and droplet distortion does not appear at high environment pressure. Nomenclature

This paper describes an experimental study on the droplet formation and the subsequent motion in a microchannel having a cross junction. While one kind of liquid (pure water or water-surfactant mixture) is drawn into a horizontal inlet channel, the other kind (oil) is introduced through two vertical inlet channels. Due to the effect of surface tension on the interface between the two fluids, the droplets of the first fluid are formed near the cross junction. In this study, we have found that the droplet formation is affected even by slight difference in the surface tension. When the surface tension between two fluids is decreased, the droplet size is decreased in order to keep the equilibration between the pressure and the surface tension. In addition, the time interval between each of the droplet formations is decreased and the distance between droplets is also decreased when the surface tension is decreased.

In this paper, flow characteristics of plasma flow in a micro-tube were investigated experimentally using Micro-PIV. For comparision, the experiments were repeated for DI-water instead of plasma. Both velocity profiles of Plasma and DI-water are well agreed with the theoretical velocity distribution of newtonian fluid. We also carried out generating plasma-in-oil droplet formation at a Y-junction microchannel. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in plasma droplet formation. Rhodamin B were mixed with plasma only for visualization of plasma droplet.
The present study has focused on the characteristics of droplet formation from an inkjet nozzle driven by a piezoelectric actuator. As an operating fluid, ethylene glycol was used and the physical properties of it such as viscosity, surface tension, contact angle and shear stress were measured. During the experiments, various temperatures and driving voltages are imposed on a capillary tube. These conditions result in a proper drive condition or an overdrive condition. In case of the proper drive condition, an image processing technique is applied to measure the diameter of a single free drop. As a result, the size of droplet is increased when the driving voltage is increased from 160 V to 190 V at 25$^{\circ}C$ In the overdrive condition where temperature or driving voltage becomes higher than the proper drive condition, satellites and the misdirected jets happen.

This study was performed to provide the information of the soot formation behavior of octane single fuel droplet under the identical combustion conditions. To achieve this, this experimental study provide the results of the soot formation characteristics of octane droplet in accordance with different initial droplet diameter($d_0$), at the same time, experiment was conducted under the same combustion conditions which are 1.0atm of ambient pressure($P_{amb}$), 21% of oxygen concentration($O_2$) and 79% of nitrogen concentration($N_2$). Visualization of octane droplet combustion was performed by visualization system with high speed camera. The results of maximum soot volume fraction($f_{vmax}$) was almost the same under the equivalent ambient conditions regardless of initial droplet diameter. Furthermore, maximum soot volume fraction was showed the higher value in the measuring direction between $135^{\circ}$ and $315^{\circ}$ since the soot-tail is generated during two opposing igniters movement process.
In this study, we investigated the dynamics of a droplet impacting rough hydrophobic surfaces through high-speed imaging. Micrometer-sized structures with grooves and pillars were fabricated on smooth Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces by laser ablation. We used Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid droplets to study the drop impact dynamics. De-ionized water and aqueous glycerin solutions were used for the Newtonian liquid droplet. The solutions of xanthan gum in water were prepared to provide elastic property to the Newtonian droplet. We found that the orientation of the surface structures affected the maximal spreading diameter of the droplet due to the degree of slippage. During the droplet retraction, the dynamic receding contact angles were measured to be around 90° or less. It resulted in the formation of the micro-capillary bridges between the receding droplet and the surface structures. Then, the rupture of the capillary bridge led to the formation of micrometer-sized droplets on top of the surface structures. The size of the microdroplets was found to increase with increasing the impacting velocity and viscosity of the Newtonian liquid droplets. However, the size of the isolated microdroplets decreased with enhancing the elasticity of the droplets, and the size of the non-Newtonian microdroplets was not affected by the impacting velocity.

Y-junction microchannels are widely used as a flew mixer. Fluids are entered from two branch channels and merged together at a combined channel. In this study, we suggest a simple method to create the fluid digitization using flow instability phenomena. Two immiscible liquids (water/oil) are infused continuously to each Y-junction inlets. Because of the differences in fluid and flow properties at the interface, oil droplet is formed automatically followed by flow instability. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in oil droplet formation, a quantitative flow visualization study has performed. Highly resolved velocity vector fields are obtained by a micro-PIV technique, so that detail flow structures around the droplet are illustrated. In this study, fluorescent particles were mixed with water only for visualization of oil droplet and velocity field measurement in water flow.
In this paper an experimental study is presented to investigate the dynamic behavior of impacting droplet onto a liquid film. The main parameters are the droplet velocity and the thickness of the liquid film. Photographic images are presented to show the formation of crown, central jet and disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The emphasis is on presenting the time evolution of crown diameter, crown height, central jet height and the size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The diameter and height of crown are higher for faster droplet and thinner liquid film. On the other hand, the height of central jet are higher for faster droplet and thicker liquid film. The size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet heavily depends on the droplet velocity; Larger droplet is produced with faster falling droplets.

A micro-water-nozzle, as one of a cooling means of micro-electronic devices, has been proposed and investigated. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle and effect of applied voltage on the meniscus formation and deformation and ejection processes of de-ionized water on the micro-water-nozzle tip have been investigated. The water ejection processes, such as a drop formation, a drop deformation, a dripping, a cone jet, and an atomization, were taken place on the micro-water-nozzle tip by the electrohydrodynamic forces acted by the DC and AC high voltages applied on the meniscus of the micro-water-nozzle tip. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system were different from that of the same metal-point electrode system, due to the meniscus formation and water droplet ejection at the nozzle tip. The positive and negative DC and AC high voltages showed the water droplets ejection, the ejection rates of 1.8, 1.5 and 1.2 g/h respectively, which, however, showed that the proposed micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system could be used as one of an effective pumping means.
