Definition of Scientific Hypothesis: A Generalization or a Causal Explanation?

  • This study reviewed and discussed the nature of scientific hypothesis described in philosophy, the philosophy of science, science, and science education. In these descriptions, a hypothesis was defined as one of five types: hypothesis as an assumption, hypothesis as a prediction, hypothesis as a tentative explanation, hypothesis as a tentative law, and hypothesis as a tentative causal explanation. Most scholars agreed that a hypothesis is a proposition or a set of propositions proposed as an explanation for an observed situation. In this view, a hypothesis is a possible answer to or an explanation of a question that accounts for all the observed facts. Also, it is a statement that explains why things happen in nature or an explanation for an observation that can be tested. In the five types of hypothesis meanings, a tentative explanation includes a tentative law and a tentative causal explanation. However, tentative laws are not explanation but description which are general statements drawn from specific experiences by way of a process known as induction. A number of studies also have distinguished hypothesis from assumption, tentative explanation, tentative law, and prediction. Therefore, a hypothesis is concluded to be a proposition or a set of propositions proposed as a tentative causal explanation for an observed situation.

The Elementary School Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions of Seasonal Length of Day and Night: Focus on the Types of Explanations in Written and Drawn Description ('계절별 낮과 밤의 길이'에 대한 초등 예비교사의 인식: 글과 그림에서 드러나는 설명 유형을 중심으로)

  • In this study, we analyzed the written and drawn explanations of thirty elementary school pre-service teachers in order to examine their perception on the seasonal length of day and night. The main findings are as follows: First, pre-service teachers used the most common term in the description of the texts, such as meridian altitude, axis of rotation, and revolution, and there were more misconceptions in the drawn explanation than in the written explanation. Second, by analyzing the pre-service teachers' perceptions by combining written and drawn explanations, it is possible to detect scientific errors that the distance between the Earth and the Sun is closer when the axis of rotation is tilted in relation to the revolution and seasonal changes due to changes in the orbital radius of the Earth. In addition, there have been types of explanations such as seasonally changing meridian altitudes related to the rotation of the Earth but no change in the location of the Sun. Based on the results of the analysis, we discussed the lack of experience in constructing an explanatory system of specific phenomena using scientific knowledge, lack of observational experiences about natural phenomena, and lack of exposure to other explanatory systems that cause cognitive conflicts. We hope that it will be concrete and practical help to improve the understanding of pre-service teachers in the science domain of primary teacher training program.

Subjective Explanation of Pictures Considering Feelings of Objects in Pictures

  • This paper aims at the construction of the system that outputs subjective and consistent linguistic expressions of some pictures. Input to this system is information on some pictures and this system outputs explanations of basic contents of pictures and consistent connective relationships between pictures. The present system consists of the explaining part of basic contents and the explaining part of connective relationship. The former part explains behaviors and feelings of objects drawn in pictures. The latter one explains the matters not drawn in pictures by guessing them from pictures. This part considers consistency of connective relationships. From the viewpoint that the interpretation of pictures is dependent on individual subjectivity, the present system has individual database for individual subjectivity. In order to confirm the usefulness of the present approach, simulation experiments are performed. In the experiments the individual databases of subjects are constructed and the outputs of the system are evaluated. Experiment results show that good evaluation is obtained.

A Comparative Study on the Tailored Collar Patterns of Women's Jackets - Focus on Clothing Construction Textbooks - (여성복 테일러드 칼라 패턴 비교연구 - 의복구성학 교재를 중심으로 -)

  • This study selected and compared 7 tailored collar making factors from 15 clothing construction university textbooks. According to the results, in 15 clothing construction textbooks, the neckline of a tailored collar was drawn at the same length as the back neck circumference of the bodice and the length of collar stand was 3cm in 10 textbooks. In addition, the length of the collar laying varied between 2cm and 4.5cm regardless of the width of the upper collar or the textile thickness. In 7 out of the 15 textbooks, the gorge line of the collar was drawn by illustrating the collar pattern on the bodice based on the roll line and then copying it symmetrically. On the other hand, the pattern of upper collar was made in 5 ways; and 2 books did not give any explanation in the sections dealing with patterns or sewing. In addition, 6 textbooks explained that inner and outer collars are sewn with a difference. The lapel pattern of the facing part was made in 4 ways; in addition, 3 textbooks did not provide an explanation and 4 books explained that the difference is given in the sewing. The textile thickness and elasticity need to be considered in collar pattern making; however, they were not specifically mentioned in most of the textbooks.

The Effects of POE Science Class Emphasizing Explanation Phase on Elementary School Students (설명 단계를 강조한 POE 과학수업이 초등학생들에게 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to see the influences of POE science class that emphasizes explanation on science research ability, motivation of science class as well as scientific attitude of elementary students. The results drawn from this analysis were as below. Firstly, positive relationship was found between science research ability and POE science class was shown among research group. This shows that science research ability was improved as POE science class encouraged the research activities of students. It indicates that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving science research ability of students. Secondly, positive relationship was found between motivation of science class and POE science class among research group and this means that POE science class that emphasizes explanation stimulates intellectual curiosity of students and improves their attitude by actively promoting research activities. Thirdly, there was a positive relationship between scientific attitude and POE science class among research group. This presents that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving students' attitude toward science by promoting research activities. Above results show that POE science class emphasizing explanation is highly effective for elementary students. It is considered that scientific writing, discussion and debate classes have positive influences on research ability, motivation of science class and scientific attitude of elementary students. Thus, it is needed to apply POE science class to current science class as it can promote wider scientific activities among students.

  • Marketing practice varies among firms. However, the prescriptive literature emphasises a universal view of practice, a 'one size fits all' view. This paper addresses the issue of explaining diversity in marketing practice in competitive space and in time. Diversity in competitive space reflects the existence of different routes to high performance. Diversity in time reflects some combination of change in the individual firm and change in a population of firms. In the former case, diversity is shaped by organisational change; in the latter by the disbandment and founding of firms in the population. In so far as diversity is the norm, the manner in which practice will be shaped by evolutionary processes is considered. Fnally, the role of the academy as one of the forces driving the evolutionary process is discussed. Miles and Snow's (1978, 1986) work is taken as a main point of departure in the search for explanation and ecological and evolutionary concepts are drawn on for support and to suggest an explanation for the nature of diversity over time.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Medical Accident Patients: The Interaction Effect of Clinicians' Explanation and Attitude and Social Support (의료사고 환자들의 외상후 스트레스 장애(PTSD) 실태: 의료진의 설명 및 태도와 사회적 지지의 상호작용)

  • Most research on medical accidents is related to medical disputes and malpractice of relief system. Therefore, there is a lack of research which explores the psychological experiences of patients injured by medical accidents. The purpose of this study was to investigate Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) of patients harmed by medical accidents and to examine the moderating role of social support on the relationship between clinicians' explanation and attitude and PTSD symptoms. A total of 180 patients were drawn from a medical accident organization and online communities related to medical accidents. Results showed that 171 (95%) of the subjects experienced full PTSD symptoms and their severity of the PTSD Symptoms was as high as those who experienced other severe traumatic events. Though the main effect of clinician's explanation and attitude on PTSD symptoms was not significant, the moderating effect of social support was significant in the relationship between clinicians' explanation and attitude and PTSD symptoms. In other words, when the level of social support was low, the poorer the explanation and attitude of clinicians, the more severe the symptoms of PTSD. Drawing from these results, psychological, social, and institutional strategies were suggested to alleviate and prevent PTSD symptoms of patients injured by medical accidents. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

A Study on Relations of Peripheral Arterial Disease Marker and Photoplethysmography Measured from the Lower Limb (하지에서의 광용적맥파와 말초동맥질환 표지자의 상관관계 연구)

  • In this study, photoplethysmography(PPG) was suggested as a way to replace the ankle-brachial index(ABI) in diagnosing PAD. The method using the PPG was presented for the simplification of the PAD diagnosis method which was used before. And the index related to the health condition of the artery from the PPG measured in both big toes of the subjects through the experiment was drawn. The indexes showing the significant relativeness in the Pearson correlation analysis with the ABI were the stiffness index(SI), reflection index(RI); it was confirmed each of them had the correlation coefficient of 0.688, and 0.637 at p < 0.05. The explanation ability of the linear regression equation derived using ABI, SI and RI was 52.5%. The explanation ability of the secondary curve regression equation derived using ABI, squared SI was 54.7%. It is expected to provide patients with significant results and draw the index associated with PAD by measuring PPG easily in the real life instead of the ambulatory care field.

The Relationships among Components of Thinking related to Statistical Variability (통계적 변이성 사고 요소 간의 관계 연구)

  • This study distinguished thinking related to statistical variability into six components - the noticing of variability, the explanation of variability, the control of variability, the modeling of variability, the understanding of samples, and the understanding of sampling distribution and investigated the relationships among the thinking components. This study found that this distinction of thinking components related to statistical variability is reasonable. The results showed that each correlation coefficient of the modeling of variability, the understanding of samples, and the understanding of sampling distribution with regard to the noticing of variability, the explanation of variability, and the control of variability is similar. Based on this results, new variable, the understanding of sampling, has been drawn. The results also showed that while the noticing of variability and the control of variability influence the understanding of sampling, the explanation of variability does not influence it.

Interaction Patterns in Dialogic Inquiry of Middle School Students in Small Groups in the Natural History Gallery (자연사관 관람에서 중학생 소집단의 대화적 탐구에서 나타나는 상호작용 유형)

  • Inquiry became an essential methodology in science education. Recently, argumentation becomes more important in inquiry, but inquiry-based teaching in school science would not provide enough opportunities for students to have voluntary and active interactions during inquiry activities. Informal science learning can be an alternative for authentic inquiry. Accordingly, this study aims to find interaction patterns in dialogic inquiry of junior high school students in small groups in the natural history gallery. Inquiry elements and interaction patterns are analyzed with 42 dialogues of 13 small groups. As a result, seven interaction patterns are identified. First, five major interaction patterns were drawn as follows; Sharing questions, asking questions and simple response, asking questions and simple explanation, asking questions-simple explanation-(collecting data)-data based explanation, and asking questions-collecting data-data based explanation. Second, pattern 2, 'asking questions and simple response', is subdivided into three categories; passive and/or evasive response, inaccurate response, and repeated patterns of asking questions-simple response. The results of the study provide different patterns of dialogic interactions in a small group inquiry in informal contexts from formal contexts, and provide foundations to understand middle school students' interactive dialogues of inquiry occurred in the natural history gallery.
