  • In this study, partially stabilized zirconia was synthesized using a chemical $Y_2O_3$ stabilizer and hydrothermal method. First, $YCl_3-6H_2O$ and $ZrCl_2O-8H_2O$ was dissolved in distilled water. Y-TZP (a $Y_2O_3$-doped toughened zirconia polycrystalline precursor) was also prepared by conventional co-precipitates in the presence of an excess amount of $NH_4OH$ solution under a fixed pH of 12. The Y-TZP precursors were filtered and repeatedly washed with distilled water to remove $Cl^-$ ions. $ZrO_2$-Xmol%$Y_2O_3$ powder was synthesized by a hydrothermal method using Teflon Vessels at $180^{\circ}C$ for 6 h of optimized condition. The powder added with the Xmol%- $Y_2O_3$ (X = 0,1,3,5 mol%) stabilizer of the $ZrO_2$ was synthesized. The crystal phase, particle size, and morphologies were analyzed. Rectangular specimens of $33mm{\times}8mm{\times}3$ mm for three-point bend tests were used in the mechanical properties evaluation. A teragonal phase was observed in the samples, which contains more than 3 mol% $Y_2O_3$. The $3Y-ZrO_2$ agglomerated particle size was measured at $7.01{\mu}m$. The agglomerated particle was clearly observed in the sample of 5 mol % $Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$, and and the agglomerated particle size was measured at 16.4 um. However, a 20 nm particle was specifically observed by FE-SEM in the sample of 3 mol% $Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$. The highest bending fracture strength was measured as 321.3 MPa in sample of 3 mol% $Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$.

  • Thin film on SiO$_2$ glass was synthesized by a dip-coating method from the ZrO$_2$ sol which had dispersed nanosize Au particle under ambient atmosphere. After heat treatment of the prepared thin film, the characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, UV-VIS spectrometer, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It was found that ZrO$_2$ thin film with 100 nm thickness was crystallized to tetragonal phase at 50$0^{\circ}C$. The size of dispersed Au particle was 15∼40nm and the film had a smooth surface with a roughness of 0.84 nm. The film showed nonlinearity characteristics with absorption peaks at 630∼670nm visible region because of the plasma resonance of Au metallic particles.

  • Tetragonal (t)-ZrO2/Al2O3 composites doped with Y2O3, Nb2O5, and Fe2O3 ((Y, Nb, Fe)-TZP/Al2O3) were prepared over the range containing Fe2O3 from 0.1 to 0.5 mol% with 0.1 mol% intervals to evaluate the effect of Fe2O3 addition on chromaticity, hydrothermal stability, and mechanical property of the composites. After autoclaving for 20 h at 18$0^{\circ}C$ under 3.5 MPa water vapor pressure, no tlongrightarrowm phase transformation was observed probably due to the preferential solid solubility of Fe2O3 in Al2O3, the presence of the rigid Al2O3 particles, and the inherent phase stability of (Y, Nb)-TZP. The optimized strength and the fracture toughness of the composite were 700 MPa and 8.5 MPa.m1/2, respectively, when 0.1 mol% Fe2O3 was added. The composites have shown a gradual color change from a slightly white ivory to a pale yellowish brown with increasing the Fe2O3 concentration.

  • 3Y-TZP block doped with $HfO_2$ and $CeO_2$ for dental ceramic block to the proliferation of CAD/CAM systems was prepared by heating at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ and then sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$. The influences of heating temperature and addition of $HfO_2$ and $CeO_2$ on the mechanical and chemical properties of 3Y-TZP block were investigated. Using the EDS mapping images, $HfO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was well dispersed in the 3Y-TZP matrix. 3 wt% $HfO_2$ doped block showed the optimum biaxial strength (1 GPa), while 3 wt% $CeO_2$ doped block enhanced the stability of $t-ZrO_2$ under hydrothermal atmosphere.

  • The most widely used piezoelectric ceramics are lead oxide based ferroelectrics (PZT). However, the toxicity of lead oxide and its high vapor pressure during processing have led to a demand for alternative lead-free piezoelectric materials. We synthesized Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of $0.96(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3-0.04SrZrO_3+x$ mol% $ZrO_2$ [KNN-SZ+$xZrO_2$; x= 0~0.10] doped with 0.1 wt% $MnO_2$ by a conventional solid state method. We investigated the piezoelectric properties and microstructures of these disk samples sintered in reduced atmosphere in order to evaluate the possibility of the multilayered piezoelectric ceramics having the base metal such as Ni as a internal electrode. All of these KNN-SZ samples sintered in 3%$H_2-97%N_2$ atmosphere at $1,140^{\circ}C$ exhibit pure perovskite structure irrespective of the content of $ZrO_2$. Meanwhile, the sintering denisty and piezoelectric properties such as $K_p$, $Q_m$ and $d_{33}$ of KNN-SZ samples as a function of $ZrO_2$ content show the maxima ($k_p$=28.07%, $Q_m$= 101.34, $d_{33}$= 156 pC/N) at x= 0.04 and it is likely that there is some morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) in this KNN-SZ+$xZrO_2$ composition system. These results indicate that the ceramic composition is a promising candidate material for applications in lead free multilayer piezoelectric ceramics.

  • A new long persistent phosphors of $CaZrO_3$ was synthesized at high temperature with weak reduction atmosphere by a traditional solid state reaction method. Photoluminescence spectra analysis showed that the $CaZrO_3$ doped with $Tb^{3+}$ emitted green-yellow emission caused by the energy level transition from the $^5D_3$ and $^5D_4$ to $^7F_1{\sim}^7F_6$. The main emission spectra of 542 nm peak by the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ transition was revealed through synthesizing at high temperature in $N_2$ gas atmosphere. The afterglow emission spectra of $CaZrO_3:Tb^{3+}$ long persistent phosphores arise at 546 nm peak of narrow range. After the 254 nm ultraviolet light excitation source was switched off, the green-yellow long persistent phosphor can be observed which could last for 8 h in the limit of light perception of dark-adapted human eyes ($0.32\;mcd/m^2$).

  • Recently, TCO films with low carrier concentration, high mobility and high work function are proposed beneficial as front electrode in HIT solar cell due to free-carrier absorption in NIR wavelength region and low Schottky barrier height in the front TCO/a-Si:H(p) interface. We report high transmittance and work function zirconium-doped indium tin oxide (ITO:Zr) films with various plasma (Ar/O2 and Ar) conditions. The role of (Ar/O2) plasma was to enhance the work function of the ITO:Zr films whereas the pure Ar plasma based ITO:Zr showed good electrical properties. The RF magnetron sputtered ITO:Zr films with low resistivity and high transmittance were employed as front electrode in HIT solar cells, yield the best performance of 18.15% with an open-circuit voltage of 710 eV and current density of 34.63 mA/cm2. The high work function ITO:Zr films can be used to modify the front barrier height of HIT solar cell.

  • $ZrO_2-dopedYb_2O_3solid$ solutions containing 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 mol% $ZrO_2were$ synthesized from spectroscopically pure $Yb_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ powders and found to be rare earth C-type structure by XRD technique. Electrical conductivities were measured as a function of temperatures from 700 to $1050^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressures from 1${\times}$$10^-5$ to 2${\times}$ $10^-1$atm. The electrical conductivities depend simply on temperature and the activation energies are determined to be 1.56-1.68 $_eV$. The oxygen partial pressure dependence of the electrical conductivity shows that the conductivity increases with increasing oxygen partial pressure, indicating p-type semiconductor. The $PO_2$ dependence of the system is nearly power of 1/4. It is suggested from the linearity of the temperature dependence of electrical conductivity and only one value of 1/n that the solid solutions of the system have single conduction mechanism. From these results, it is concluded that the main defects of the system are negatively doubly charged oxygen interstitial in low. $ZrO_2doping$ level and negatively triply charged cation vacancy in high doping level and the electrical conduction is due to the electronic hole formed by the defect structure.
