  • The properties of the n-type impurities nitrogen and phosphorus in diamond have been investigated by means of electronic band structure calculations within the framework of the semiempirical extended Huckel tight-binding method. For diamond with the nitrogen and phosphorus substitutional impurities, calculated density of states shows the impurity level deep in the band gap. This property can be derived from the substantial <111> relaxation of the impurity and nearest-neighbor carbon atoms, which is associated with the population of an antibonding orbital between them. The passivated donor property of the P-vacancy complex which lies deep in the gap is also discussed.

  • 3,7-bis(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-5-phenyl-5H-benzo[b]phosphinedole 5-sulfide (DBPPS-TPA) and 3,7-bis(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-5-phenyl-5H-benzo[b]phosphinedole 5-selenide (DBPPSe-TPA) are newly synthesized D-A-D type molecules based on dibenzophospholes and their physic-chemical properties are studied in comparison with a P=O type compouond, 3,7-bis(4-(diphenylamino)-5-phenyl-5H-benzo[b]phosphinedole 5-oxide (DBPPO-TPA). Fluorescence emission and electrochemical redox properties of these compounds are investigated regarding results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, X-ray crystallographic structures and UV-vis absorption spectra. These results exhibit systematic variation in optical properties of these compounds having P=O, P=S, and P=Se units. LUMO energy level is systematically modulated with different chalcogenide atoms.

  • The electronic structure of cis-$[Cr(cyclam)Cl_2]Cl$ has been investigated by the emission and excitation spectroscopy at 77K, and infrared and visible spectroscopy at room temperature. The ten electronic transitions due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden are assigned. The zero-phonon line in the excitation spectrum splits into two components by $139\;cm^{-1}$, and it can be reproduced by modern ligand field theory. According to the results of ligand field analysis, we can confirm that nitrogen atoms of the cyclam ligand have a strong ${\sigma}$-donor character, but chloride ligand has weak ${\sigma}-$ and ${\pi}-$donor properties toward chromium(III) ion.

  • A novel mononuclear supramolecule of copper(II) has been synthesized with Ippyt ligand (Ippyt=3-(4'-imidazole phenyl)-5-(pyrid-2''-yl)-1,2,4-triazole) (1). Compound 1, namely [$Cu(Ippyt)_2(H_2O)_2$], has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectrum, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Structure determination reveals that the elongated-octahedral geometry is formed in the vicinity of the copper (II) atom being coordinated by four nitrogen atoms from two Ippyt ligands occupying the equatorial position and two oxygen atoms from two coordinated water molecules in the axial position, which together form the $N_4O_2$ donor set. Hydrogen bonding interactions between nitrogen and oxygen atoms result in the set up of a supramolecular network architecture. Biological properties including antibacterial activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic activity of compound 1 have been investigated by agar diffusion method and the modified Marklund method, respectively. The results indicate that compound 1 exhibits a stronger antibacterial efficiency than the parent ligand and it also has a certain radical-scavenging activity.

  • The following new cryptand 221 complexes of lanthanides(Ⅲ) and dioxouranium(Ⅵ) nitrate have been synthesized: $(Ln(C_{16}H_{32}N_2O_5)(H_2O)_2(NO_3)_3\ and \((UO_2)_2(C_{16}H_{32}N_2O_5)(H_2O)_4(NO_3)_4$. These complexes have been identified by elemental analysis, moisture titration, conductivity measurements and various spectroscopic techniques. The proton and carbon-13 NMR as well as calorimetric measurements were used to study the interaction of cryptand 221 with La(Ⅲ), Pr(Ⅲ ), Ho(Ⅲ) and $UO_2(Ⅱ)$ ions in nonaqueous solvents. The bands of metal-oxygen atoms, metal-nitrogen atoms and O-U-O in the IR spectra shift upon complexation to lower frequencies, and the vibrational spectra ({\delta}NMN$) of metal-amide complexes in the crystalline state exhibit lattice vibrations below 300 $cm^{-1}$. The NMR spectra of the lanthanides(Ⅲ) and dioxouranium(Ⅵ) nitrate complexes in nonaqueous solvents are quite different, indicating that the ligand exists in different conformation, and also the $^1H$ and $^{13}C-NMR$ studies indicated that the nitrogen atom of the ring has greater affinity to metal ions than does the oxygen atom, and the planalities of the ring are lost by complexation with metal ions. Calorimetric measurements show that cryptand 221 forms more stable complexes with $La^{3+}$ and $Pr^{3+}$ ions than with $UO^{22+}$ ion, and $La^{3+}/Pr^{3+}$ and $UO^{22+}/Pr^{3+}$ selectivity depends on the solvents. These changes on the stabilities are dependent on the basicity of the ligand and the size of the metal ions. The absorption band (230-260 nm) of the complex which arises from the direct interaction of macrocyclic donor atoms with the metal ion is due to n-{\delta}*$ transition and also that (640-675 nm) of $UO^{22+}$-cryptand 221 complex, which arises from interaction between two-dioxouranium(Ⅵ) ions in being out of cavity of the ligand ring is due to d-d* transition.

  • The dependence of compensation mechanism in $P^+$-InGaAs layer implanted with oxygen on the annealing temperatures was investigated. The oxygen implantation was performed for electrical isolation. The conductivity was controlled by damage related traps below $500^{\circ}C$. For the temperature of 500 to $600^{\circ}C$, oxygen began to show the chemical effect of compensating the acceptors due to activation and type conversion (plongrightarrown-type) occurred at $600^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the defects generated by the chemical activity of oxygen increased with increasing annealing temperature, where activation energy of 24.2 meV was obtained. It is attributed to the formation of native defects, such as In interstitials, acting as shallow donor in InGaAs. Above $600^{\circ}C$, the interstitial Be atoms become reactivated and the n-type conductivity decreases.

  • The protonation constants of the macrocyclic ligands, 1,4-dioxa-7,10,13,16-tetraaza-cyclooctadecane-N,N',N",N"'-tetra(acetic acid) [N-ac4[18]aneN402] and 1,4-dioxa-7,10,13,16-tetraazacyclooctadecane-1,4-dioxa-7,10,13,16-N,N',N",N"'-tetra(methylacetic acid) [N-meac4[18]aneN4O2] have been determined by using potentiometric method. The protonation constants of the N-ac4[18]aneN4O2 were 9.31 for logK1H, 8.94 for logK2H, 7.82 for logK3H, 4.48 for logK4H and 2.94 for logK5H. And the protonation constants of the N-meac4[18]aneN4O2 were 9.34 for logK1H, 9.13 for logK2H, 8.05 for logK3H, 5.86 for logK4H, and 3.55 for logK5H. The stability constants of complexes on the divalent transition ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and tiivalent metal ions (Ce3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, and Yb3+) with ligands N-ac4[18]-aneN4O2 and N-meac4[18]aneN4O2 have been obtained from the potentiometric data with the aid of the BEST program. The three higher values of the protonation constants for synthesized macrocyclic ligands correspond to the protonation of nitrogen atoms, and the fourth and fifth values correspond to the protonation of the carboxylate groups for the N-ac4[18]aneN4O2 and N-meac4[18]aneN4O2. The meatal ion affinities of the two tetra-azamacrocyclic ligands with four pendant acetate donor groups or methylacetate donor groups are compared. The effects of the metal ions on the stabilities are discussed, and the trends in stability constants resulting from changing the macrocyclic ring with pendant donor groups and acidity of the metal ions.

  • Xanthine Oxidase is an enzyme, which oxidizes hypoxanthine to xanthine, and xanthine to uric acid. It is widely distributed throughout various organs including the liver, gut, lungs, kidney, heart, brain and plasma. It is involved in gout pathogenesis. Hence, in the present study, Hologram based Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Study was performed on a series of Xanthine Oxidase antagonist named 2-(indol-5-yl) thiazole derivatives. The best HQSAR model was obtained using Atoms, Bonds, Connection, Hydrogen, Chirality and Donor Acceptor as fragment distinction parameter using hologram length 71 and 4 components with fragment size of minimum 2 and maximum 5. Significant cross-validated correlation coefficient ($q^2$= 0.563) and non cross-validated correlation coefficients ($r^2$= 0.967) were obtained. The model was then used to evaluate the six external test compounds and its $r^2{_{pred}}$ was found to be 0.798. Contribution map show that presence of propyl ring in indole thiazole makes big contributions for improving the biological activities of the compounds. We hope that our HQSAR model and analysis will be helpful for future design of xanthine oxidase antagonists.

  • Two properties of sodium naphthalenide (2), i.e. a strong base and a good electron donor were utilized for one pot synthesis: 2-alkylthiobenzimidazoles were synthesized in excellent yields from the reactions of benzimidazoline-2-thione (1) with an equimolar amount of alkyl halides in the presence of 2. Continuous addition of a different alkyl halide without the isolation of 2-alkylthiobenzimidazoles afforded 1-alkyl-2-alkylthiobenzimidazoles having different alkyl groups at N and S atoms in excellent yields. Further addition of 2 to 1-alkyl-2-alkylthiobenzimidazoles gave excellent yields of 1-alkylbenzimidazoline-2-thiones. When 2 in THF was added to a suspension of 1-alkyl-2-alkylthiobenzimidazoles in THF, a bond cleavage between N and C of alkyl group as well as S and C of alkyl group occurred. This is in contrast to the observation in which only cleavage between S and C of alkyl group takes place in the homogeneous solution.
