  • (+)-Methamphetamine (METH) is a psychostimulant, which has been the most popular abused drug in Korea. The rewarding mechanism in METH abuse has been reported to be mediated by dopaminergic system. Recently, it has been reported that dopamine releaser (phentermine) plays a dominant role in the discriminative stimulus effects of METH, whereas 5-HT releaser (fenfluramine) can strongly modify METH self-administration. The present study is designed to assess the behavioral changes and the changes of the serotonin receptors in the brains of rats administered repeated of self-administered METH. The repeated administration of 1.0 mg/kg/day METH for 12 days increased locomotor activities, and there was no difference between i.v. and i.p. treatment. Rats had actively acquired METH self-administration for 3 weeks at 0.1 or 0.2 mg/kg/injection. Whereas, it was taken few days to acquire sucrose pellet self-administration. The binding of [$^3$H]-8-hydroxy-DPAT (5-H $T_{1A}$ receptors) and [$^3$H]-5-carboxytryptamine (5-H $T_{1B}$ receptors) to brain sections was examined. Both passive administration and self-administration of METH did not change significantly the serotonin receptors levels in hippocampus, striatum and nucleus accumbens. These results suggest that serotonin receptors may not change in the acquisition period of METH self-administration, and we are trying to investigate the serotonin receptors levels of brain in rats maintained of METH self-administration.n.n.

  • Obesity during childhood is a dominant risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and is itself considered a disease that needs to be treated. Recently, the growth in childhood obesity in Korea has become stagnant; however, two in every ten children are still overweight. In addition, 60% or more of overweight children have at least one metabolic syndrome risk factor. Thus, childhood obesity should be controlled through lifestyle modification. This paper reviews studies of the modifiable risk factors of obesity in Korean children. According to the life-course approach, preschool-aged children (<5 years) are influenced by their parents rather than individual habits because they are under mostly parental care. Elementary school-aged children (6 to 11 years) are affected by overlapping individual and parental effects. This may mean that the establishment of individual behavior patterns begins during this period. The conditions of poor eating habits such as skipping meals, eating out, and high fat intake, along with low physical activity, facilitate increased obesity among adolescents (12 to 18 years). Notably, adolescent girls show high rates of both underweight and obesity, which may lead to the development of NCDs in their offspring. Therefore, the problem of NCDs is no longer limited to adults, but is also prevalent among children. In addition, early intervention offers cost-effective opportunities for preventing NCDs. Thus, children need primary consideration, adequate monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment to reduce the burden of NCDs later in adulthood.

  • Fish was caught by a set net in Gwideok, Jeju island that was studied to determine monthly variation of species composition and catch from May 2005 to October 2006. Total catch was 54 species, 44,118 individuals, and 2,152,423.7 g during survey period. Dominant species were Trachurus japonicus and Siganus fuscescens that held 91.3% of total individuals and 71.3% of total abundance. The highest individuals and abundance of catch were in July 2005, and the lowest individuals and abundance of catch were in October 2006 and in October 2005, respectively. As the result, temporal change in abundance have corresponded with changing water temperature.

  • A time series dataset was conducted to ascertain the effect of water table on the variability in and emission of CH4 and CO2 concentrations at a closed landfill site. An in-situ data of methane/carbon dioxide concentrations and environmental parameters were collected by means of an in-borehole gas monitor, the Gasclam (Ion Science, UK). Linear regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the correlation between ground-gas concentration and water table. The result shows CH4 and CO2 concentrations to be variable with strong negative correlations of approximately 0.5 each with water table over the entire monitoring period. The R2 was slightly improved by considering their concentration over single periods of increasing and decreasing water table, single periods of increasing water table, and single periods of decreasing water table; their correlations increased significantly at 95% confidence level. The result revealed that fluctuations in groundwater level is the key driving force on the emission of and variability in groundgas concentration and neither barometric pressure nor temperature. This finding further validates the earlier finding that atmospheric pressure - the acclaimed major control on the variability/migration of CH4 and CO2 concentrations on contaminated sites, is not always so.

  • Dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder usually inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. DRPLA has been shown to be associated with expansion of an unstable cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) trinucleotide repeat in a gene on chromosome 12p. We evaluated a family with DRPLA that affected three members; A 35-year-old female presented with seven year history of gait ataxia, dysarthria and mild cognitive impairment. The MRI of the brain revealed diffuse cerebellar atrophy with an incidental lipoma in the midbrain. Her 30-year-old brother presented with progressive cerebellar ataxia that developed at the age of 20. Her grandmother and mother were reported to have developed ataxia during the late period of their life, and died at the age of 60 and 55, respectively. The demonstration of an expanded CAG repeat in the gene for DRPLA was used to confirm the diagnosis.

  • This study was carried out to get the genetic information on the germination rate and fat acidity after 12 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Germination rate decreased with longer storage period, while fat acidity increased. Germination rate was higher in the order of Koshihikari, Hanmaeum and Unkwangbyeo after 12 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Fat acidity of Koshihikari and Hanmaeum was gradually increased, but that of Unkwangbyeo was dramatically increased after 4 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. The genetic mode on germination rate and fat acidity using the joint scaling test was shown to be additive-dominance gene effects. Additive([d]) effect was higher than dominance effect([h]) in all crosses. The average degree of dominance, [h]/[d], was less than 1, indicating that germination rate and fat acidity was partially dominant. Germination rate and fat acidity based on frequency distribution of 2 crosses were quantitative characters expressed by polygenes.

  • In this study, datum points measurement have been collected and then weather data have been analyzed to figure out erosion and deposition environmental change around Halmi-island, Baramarae. First of all, it was difficult to analyze geomorphological change which is caused by climate change because of quite short term of collection period of data. However, differences in spatial distribution of erosion and deposition have locally been shown. In all season, the wind is blowing in north and north-west direction mostly except in summer which is shifted to south direction. However, since its ratio which are above 5m/s is much lower than the north and north-west wind, its effect on geomorphological process is very tiny. In order to look at a tendency of erosion and deposition environmental change around Baramarae Halmi-island, the periphery of Halmi-island was classified to east and west part, then accumulated erosion and deposition values have been calculated. As a result, generally, the datum points are located in the west part which are mostly depositional sites. On the other hand, the datum points are located in east part showed the dominant erosion patterns.

  • This study describes biological environmental characteristics in natural habitats of Haliotis diversicolor in the coastal area of Sungsanpo located in the eastern coast of Jeju-do, Korea. The field survey was monthly conducted from May 2006 to February 2007. H. diversicolor, sea urchin, turban shell and marine algae were collected by two divers using SCUBA. The species composition of demersal fishes were seasonally investigated by fish traps in 2007. During the study period, more than 67% of H. diversicolor and sea urchin were found in the depth shallower than 5 m, and more than 64% of turban shell were found in the depth deeper than 3 m. The dominant algal species in May were generally Undaria pinnatifida, Ecklonia cava, Sargassum. spp. and coralline algae. Most of demersal fishes collected by the fish traps were wrasses which have been reported as a major predator of young abalone.

  • Plants are consumed by a myriad of organisms that compete for resources. Direct interactions among multiple plant-feeding organisms in a single host can range for each species from positive to negative. Wood-boring beetle faces a number of biotic and abiotic constraints that interfere with the good prospects from the tree. Biotic factors, including arthropod pests and diseases, and abiotic factors, such as drought and water-logging, are the major constraints affecting the species. The present study aimed to provide basic data for analyzing forest health, identify the kinds of wood-boring beetles in the central part of Korea. Our second goal was to analyze the species composition and diversity of regional communities and to examine. A total of 10,461 individual wood-boring beetles belonging to 8 families and 50 species attracted to trap trees in the pine forests were recorded during the study period on study sites. The results of the analysis of collected species showed that the community structure on all study sites was similar. Seasonal occurrences of dominant wood-boring beetles (5 species) from each study site showed the highest number of all species, except for Siphalinus gigas in May, followed by a gradual decline, and the largest number of Siphalinus gigas appeared in June. The similarity index of species composition was relatively high, ranging from 0.75 to 0.90 for each study site.

  • Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec is one of the codecs which is used for making voice calls. It helps to connect people who are scattered in various geographical areas. It adjusts its bit-rate according to the user's channel conditions. It plays a vital role in providing an improved speech quality of voice connection in Long Term Evolution (LTE). There are some constraints which need to be addressed in providing this service profitably. Quality of Service (QoS) is the dominant mechanism which determines the quality of the speech in communication. On several occasions, number of users are trying to access the same channel simultaneously by standing in a particular region for a longer period of time. It refers to Multi-user channel sharing problem which leads to resource loss very often. The main aim of this paper is to develop a novel RSA - QoS scheduling algorithm for reducing the Resource Loss Ratio. Eventually, it increases the throughput. The simulation result shows that the RSA - QoS increases the number of users for accessing the resources better than the existing algorithms in terms of resource loss and throughput. Ultimately, it enhances the QoS in Mobile Networks.
