  • The magnetic effects connected to finite-size of the particles become dominant at transition of particles in region several nanometers and less [1]. At reduction of atom numbers in magnetic cluster (tens or hundreds atoms), along the classical features, essential appear the quantum phenomena resulting in spin transformation of magnetic structure, both with reduction of the size and at applying of an external magnetic field. • Electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis are important transport phenomena produced by external electric field applied to a microchannel containing a conductive fluid. We developed a CFD code to predict electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic flows in a microchannel with a uniform circular post array. Using the code, we calculated particle velocities driven by electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis, and conducted Monte Carlo simulations to visualize the particle motions. The code was validated by comparing the results with those from previous studies in literature. At a low electric field, electrokinesis and diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism. At a moderate electric field, dielectrophoresis is balanced with electrokinesis and diffusion, resulting in flowing filaments of particles in the microchannels. However, dielectrophoresis overwhelms the flow at a high electric field and traps particles locally. These results provide useful insight for optimizing design parameters of a microfluidic chip for biochemical analysis, especially for development of on-chip sample pretreatment techniques using electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic effects.

  • In this study, slope hazards mitigation methods for a natural terrain are systematically classified to survey the mitigation methods and develop a data base system. Also, field survey sheets which can be recorded the features of mitigation methods installed in the natural slope are developed. The slope hazards mitigation methods in the natural slope are classified as hillside part method and valley part method. The slope part sheet and the valley part sheet are also drawn up for field survey. As the result of the filed survey of mitigation methods about 50 points in Muju and Jangsu area, grass painting and slope covering methods are dominant in case of slopes part. In case of valley part, slit dam, concrete check dam and slope foot barrier are applied simultaneously.

  • The change in the magnetic properties of a spin-valve multilayer with the structure IrMn (9 m)/CoFe (4 nm)/Cu (2.6 nm)/CoFe (2 nm)/NiEe (6 nm) is investigated as a function of the size and the aspect ratio. At a fixed aspect ratio (the length/width ratio) of 2, the magnetostatic interactions begin to affect the magnetic properties substantially at a spin-valve length of 5 $\mum$, and, at a length of 1 $\mum$, they become even more dominant. In the case of a fixed multilayer size (2.4 $\mum$) which is indicated by the sum of the length and the width, magnetization change occurs by continuous spin-reversal and M-H loops are characterized by no or very small hysteresis at aspect ratios smaller than unity, At aspect ratios greater than unity, magnetization change occurs by spin-flip resulting in squared hysteresis loops. A very large changes in the coercivity and the bias field is observed, and these results are explained by two separate contributions to the total magnetostatic interactions: the coercivity by the self-demagnetizing field and the bias field by the interlayer magnetostatic interaction field.

  • Nationwide survey of weed population in paddy rice field was conducted from 1760 fields all around Republic of Korea in 1981. The weed species observed include 2 species of grasses, 7 species of sedges, and 18 species of broadleaf weeds, and the dominant weed species were Monochoria vaginalis, Sagitraria trifolia, Potamogeton distinstus, Sagittaria pygmea and Cyperus serotinus. More and many weeds were growing in single cropped field than double cropped field. In single cropped fields, weed population was reduced when autumn plowing was conducted. In double cropped fields, more weeds were growing in barley or wheat grown fields than vegetable gown fields. Among the five paddy soil types, more weeds were growing in saline soils and poorly drained soils than others. The proportion of annual and perennial weeds in national average was 44% and 56%, and perennials became more dominant in central part of the peninsula. Autumn plowing and double cropping appeared to reduce the perennial weed population, however, the increased perennial weed population, presumably due to continuous use of herbicides which controls mostly annuals, seemed to an urgent problem to be solved.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the community structure of superfamily Coreoidea (Geocorisae: Hemiptera) in Mt. Kyeryongsan from August, 1989 to August, 1990. The collected coreoid insects were composed of 17 species, 13 genera, and 2 families. Percentages of coreoid insects found in each observed zone were 47.4% (13 species) in the paddy bank, 37.4 % (13 species) in the weedy field and 15.2% (11 species) in the shrubs. Dominant species and Simpson's dominance indices were Riptortus clavatusa and Stictopleurus crassicornis ($\lambda$=0.128) in the paddy field, Cletus schmidti and Homoeocerus dilatatus ($\lambda$=0.141) in the weedy field, Riptortus clavatus and Homoeocerus dilatatus ($\lambda$=0.199) in the shrubs. Seasonal dominant species were Cletus trigon us and Rhopalus maculatus ($\lambda$=0.149) in Spring, Cletus schmidti and Homoeocerus dilatatus ($\lambda$=0.132) in Summer, and Riptortus clavatus and Cletus schmidti ($\lambda$=0. 386) in Autumn. Species diversity indices(H') in the paddy bank, weedy field, and shrubs were 0.931, 0.916, and 0.810, respectively. Eveness indices(J') were 0.836, 0.800, and 0.778, respectively. Community structures were almost similar between the paddy bank and the weedy field.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sea water transport between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River estuary. A current meter was placed on a pier bridge and the current velocity was analyzed to determine the flow direction. Water temperature, salinity, turbidity, and tide were also measured to determine the characteristics of sea water and to describe the tidal current between the two regions. The results indicated that the dominant outflow direction of the ebb tidal current was from the Nakdong River estuary to Busan New-port. Conversely, during a flood tide, the dominant direction was from Busan New-port to the Nakdong River estuary. The maximum current speed during the first and second field measurements was about 13.18 and 30.80 cm/ sec, respectively. During the first field measurement, the total volume of sea water transport was $184.71\;m^3/sec$ and the residual volume transport was $+59.74\;m^3/sec$. By contrast, during the second field measurement, the respective values were $331.15\;m^3/sec$ and $28.88\;m^3/sec$.

  • Halophyte distribution pattern and area in the Suncheon-bay and Beolgyo estuary coastal wetlands were analyzed using KOMPSAT-2 landsat images were taken in 2008 and 2009, and field investigations were fulfilled for confirming the precise boundaries of individual halophyte areas. The salt-marsh vegetation in those areas can be classified mainly into two dominant communities: Suaeda japonica-dominant and Phragmites communis-dominant communities. In order to identify sedimentary characteristics, tidal-flat surface leveling and sedimentary facies analysis had been conducted. The sedimentary facies of marsh area are mostly silty clayey and clay facies with a little seasonal change and its slope is very gentle (0.0007~0.002 in gradient). Phragmites communis and Suaeda japonica communities were distributed in the mud-flat zone between 0.7 m and 1.8 m higher than MSL (mean sea level): zone of 1.1~1.8 m in the former and zone of 0.7~1.3 m in the latter. In the Suncheon-bay estuarine wetland, on the basis of 2009 distribution, Phragmites communis-dominant and Suaeda japonica-dominant communities are about $0.79km^2$ and $0.22km^2$ in distribution area, respectively. On the other hand, Bulgyo estuarine marsh shows that the distribution areas of Phragmites communis-dominant and Suaeda japonica-dominant communities are about $0.31km^2$ and 0.031km2 in distribution area, respectively. Individual 105 and 60 dominant community areas and their distribution patterns can be well defined and indicated in the Suncheon-bay and Bulgyo estuarine marshes, respectively. The distribution pattern and area of hylophyte communities analyzed in this study based on 2008/2009 satellite images would be valuable as a base of future monitoring of salt-marsh related studies in the study area which is the most important salt-marsh research site in Korea.

  • Transport of carbon and boron impurity ions parallel to magnetic field lines in the tokamak SOL (scrape-off layer) is numerically investigated for a one-dimensional steady state. The spatial distributions of density and velocity of the impurity ions in a steady state are calculated by finite difference method for a single-fluid model. The calculated results show that among forces acting on SOL particles thermal force produced tv plasma temperature gradient is a principal force determining the feature of impurity distribution profiles in the tokamak edge. However, strong collisional friction forces appearing dominant in front of the diverter plate restrain impurity ion flows due to temperature gradients from moving toward the midplane. Consequently, the stagnation point develops in the impurity flow by these two forces near the diverter region, in which ion flows change their directions. Impurity ions turn out to be accumulated at the stagnation points, where peaked profiles of highly-ionized state ions are relatively predominant over those of low-ionized state ions.
