  • An understanding of potential lumber cutting yields may lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber in wood industry. Computer simulations of rough-mill operations require a lumber database as input to give reasonable estimates of such yields. The lumber database must contain detailed information regarding the location and type of defects, and then all manufacturing sequences can be tested with the same raw material. However, no suitable lumber database with mapped defects exists for Korean wood industry. In this study lumber databases of Pinus densiflora S. et Z and Quercus acutissima which are the main Korean domestic species were developed to prepare for coming era of "utilization of domestic species" in the near future. These databases were put into lumber cut-up simulation model(gang-rip-first simulator) to investigate the part yields. Gang-rip first simulation showed average part yields of 44.75% and 63.10% for Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora lumber database developed, respectively. In most cases process set-up of fixed blade best feed showed the best part yields and the level of acceptable defects could not make significant differences in part yields.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the cases of endangered species protection campaigns of domestic and foreign enterprises and to present improvement points and direction. Therefore, this study analyzed the cases and characteristics of the campaign by setting above small and medium sized domestic and foreign companies as subjects for research. The study found that there were mainly campaigns conducted in cooperation with large environmental organizations in Korea, and as an IT powerhouse, there were examples of such campaigns. Foreign companies independently participated in environmental protection, and cases of fashion and cosmetic brand campaigns were easily found. Based on these characteristics, this study aims to present improvements and directions for animal protection campaigns in the future.

  • Screw-type fasteners are widely used to make connections between wood members or between wood and steel connectors because they can tolerate the applied loads by withdrawal or shearing. In this study, we evaluated the withdrawal resistances of the screw-type fasteners and analyzed the effects of the lead-hole size, relative grain direction (tangential, radial, and cross-sections) of the wood member, screw diameter, screw type, and species. Two wood species, including domestic larch and imported spruce, and three screw-type fasteners, including domestic lag screws (diameters of 9.46, 7.79, and 6.27 mm), domestic tapping screw (diameter, 6.3 mm), and imported Sherpa screw (diameter, 8.0 mm) were used. To assess the effect of lead-hole size, the lead holes with diameters corresponding to 68.7%, 70.8%, and 74.0% of the shank diameter of the lag screw were predrilled. The lead hole corresponding to 74% of the shank diameter was selected for this study because the smaller lead holes required higher rotational force for installation, which may cause damage in the screw neck, although there was no significant difference in the withdrawal resistance depending on the lead-hole sizes applied in this study. The lag screws installed on the tangential and radial surfaces showed similar withdrawal resistances to each other, which were greater than those installed on the cross-sectional surface. As the lag screw diameter increased from 6.27 mm to 9.46 mm, the withdrawal resistance also increased proportionally. The withdrawal resistance of the tapping screw having a diameter of 6.3 mm was almost 1.6 times higher than that of the lag screw having a similar diameter of 6.27 mm, while that of Sherpa screw having a diameter of 8.0 mm was around 1.4 times higher than that of the lag screw having a similar diameter of 7.79 mm.

  • Three major domestic softwoods, Korean red pine, Korean pine and larch, were heat-treated at $220^{\circ}C$ and for various treatment times for color changing. A new heat treatment equipment was developed for this study and was revealed working well for changing the colors of the three softwoods. The color difference index of 15 was obtained after 8 hours for Korean red pine and Korean pine, and 10 hours for Larch. The correlations of brightness, redness and yellowness with treatment time were different between species.

  • Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbology of the plants to Dioscoreaceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : Books and research papers about Herbology which published at home and abroad were examined. Results : A list was made about Dioscoreaceae plant which were cultivated or grew naturally in Korea, after investigated the data on domestic and foreign Dioscoreaceae plants. Out of those lists, serviceable plants were selected and with those available plants, their distributions were analysed and parts which can be used as medicines were divided into 3 categories such as oriental medicine name, scientific name and non-official name. Dioscoreaceae's properties flavor, channels they use, effects, and toxicity were also noted. Dioscoreaceae (grew in Korea) were divided into 1 classes with 8 species. Out of those, 1 classes with 7 species were found serviceable which indicates 87.5% of all. Out of all 8 specified Dioscoreaceae plants, Dioscorea plants were found 1 species, which were shown the most. And 1classes of Dioscorea plants were also selected the most in serviceable Dioscoreaceae. Out of all serviceable parts in Dioscoreaceae, Rhizoma parts took first place as 7 species. Toxins are investigated to 1 species. Conclusion : There were totaled to 1 genera and 8 species in Dioscoreaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 4 genera, 7 species, some 87.5% in total.

  • The application of abrasive-assisted high energy water-jet was investigated as a possible new method of cutting wood. In this study the maximum cutting speeds for species of various wood density were determined and water-jet machining characteristics were investigated for sixteen Korean domestic species. The maximum cutting speed ranged from 200 to 750 mm/min. The results indicate that wood density affects machining characteristics such as maximum cutting speed, surface roughness, and kerf width. Roughness of surface generated increased and kerf width decreased as penetration depth increased.

  • The freshwater algae were collected at reservoirs and small ponds in Gyeonggi-do and Jeju-do on June 2016. Four species of Korean previously unrecorded algae were collected in domestic fresh waters: Coelastrum rugosum, Cosmarium baccatum, Cosmarium norimbergense and Staurastrum connatum var. pseudoamericanum. The morphological characteristics of the four taxa identified in this study were showed mostly similar to the characteristics of the previously reported characteristics. However, Cosmarium baccatum was larger than the previously recorded species and Staurastrum connatum var. pseudoamericanum was wider than the previously recorded species.

  • In this paper, a total of 11 species of the genus Chirosia are treated. Among them, a species, Chirosia flavipennis (Fallen, 1823), is newly added to Korean fauna. The keys to Korean species, host plants and domestic localities are given. Some illustrations of male genitalic features are included. The cladistic analysis of the Korean species is performed using Musca domestica (Muscidae), Scathophaga stercoraria (Scathophagidae), Delia platura (Anthomyiidae) and Anthomyia angulata (Anthomyiidae) as outgroups.
