  • The goal of qualitative analysis is to capture and formalize qualitative and intuitive knowledge about physical world. Qualitative reasoning has been successfully applied to electric and mechanical mechanism domains, in which most of reasoning has focused on simulation. This paper introduces a qualitative comparative analysis technique which predicts how a change in a given situation propagates. We developed a comparative analysis technique which extends previous research by including a reasoning technique about the relative rate of the change of a parameter. Previous research focuses only on the relative change of a parameter. Causal model for the given situation is generated from qualitative domain model. The propagation by the change in causal relations are traced by applying our comparative analysis. By providing explanation as well as prediction for the given change, our technique is expected to be used in design, diagnosis, intelligent tutoring system, environmental evaluation.

  • Ontology matching technique is one of the most important techniques in the Semantic Web as well as in other areas. Ontology matching algorithm takes two ontologies as input, and finds out the matching relations between the two ontologies by using some parameters in the matching process. Ontology matching is very useful in various areas such as the integration of large-scale ontologies, the implementation of intelligent unified search, and the share of domain knowledge for various applications. In general cases, the performance of ontology matching is estimated by measuring the matching results such as precision and recall regardless of the requirements that came from the matching environment. Therefore, most research focuses on controlling parameters for the optimization of precision and recall separately. In this paper, we focused on the harmony of precision and recall rather than independent performance of each. The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology that determines parameters for the desired ratio of precision and recall that is appropriate for the requirements of the matching environment.

  • We investigate the worst case complexity regarding the number of comparisons for a simple and stable merging algorithm. The complexity analysis shows that the algorithm performs O(mlog(n/m)) comparisons for two sequences of sizes m and n $m{\leq}n$. So, according to the lower bound for merging $\Omega$(mlog(n/m)), the algorithm is asymptotically optimal regarding the number of comparisons. For proving the worst case complexity we divide the domain of all inputs into two disjoint cases. For either of these cases we will extract a special subcase and prove the asymptotic optimality for these two subcases. Using this knowledge for special cases we will prove the optimality for all remaining cases. By using this approach we give a transparent solution for the hardly tractable problem of delivering a clean complexity analysis for the algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of environmental inquiry activities and values of elementary school students written in their reports of the Energy Environment Inquiry Activity Contest which is a unit contest of the Youth Science Festival held annually in Korea and get some ideas for the valuable way of Korean environmental education. 10 teams' reports were gathered and the locality, class study area, inquiry theme, inquiry method and values were analyzed and introduced as case studies to get some insights to teach elementary school students environmental values through inquiry activities of science subject approach. Each teams set various inquiry themes in the content domain of energy resources and earth environment conservation focusing on each team's geographical characteristics and occurring environmental problems in their local areas. There were 16 sentences representing technocentrism and 12 sentences representing ecocentrism. 5 of 10 teams showed both of technocentrism and ecocentrism in their reports. But their was only scientific knowledge without any environmental values in one team's report. Inquiry activity is a good teaching-learning method to develop environmental literacy. There should be environmental values involved as far as it is the environmental inquiry activities using environmental subject matter. The result of this study proposes that environmental educators should actively intervene for inquirers to set a stage in the whole process to search for an alternative to solve environmental problems involved in their project activities. The reason is because the environmental education in the elementary school is established to operate by the infusion way into various subjects already existed in the Korean curriculum.

  • The purpose was to analyze the trend of sport pedagogy in secondary teacher certification examination based on the secondary teacher qualification criterion in Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation since abolition of multiple-choice questions from 2014 to 2020. The result showed the questions for sport pedagogy were 48 question since 2014, and found 83 sub-questions. The implications are as follows. First, the frequency of sub-questions in sport pedagogy has increased, causing an integrated question. Second, the serious unbalanced issue of questions for examination was presented. Third, dependence on specific domains was excessively high. Fourth, the confusion caused by the overlapped domains with the content knowledge of physical education subject was intensified. Therefore, evaluation factors based on 2016 KICE classification table should be clear and field application questions should be developed.

  • Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious trans-boundary viral disease caused by FMD virus, which causes huge economic losses. FMDV infects cloven hoofed (two-toed) mammals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and various wildlife species. To control the FMDV, it is necessary to understand the life cycle and the pathogenesis of FMDV in host. Especially, the protein-protein interaction between FMDV and host will help to understand the survival cycle of viruses in host cell and establish new therapeutic strategies. However, the computational approach for protein-protein interaction between FMDV and pig hosts have not been applied to studies of the onset mechanism of FMDV. In the present work, we have performed the prediction of the pig's proteins which interact with FMDV based on RNA-Seq data, protein sequence, and structure information. After identifying the virus-host interaction, we looked for meaningful pathways and anticipated changes in the host caused by infection with FMDV. A total of 78 proteins of pig were predicted as interacting with FMDV. The 156 interactions include 94 interactions predicted by sequence-based method and the 62 interactions predicted by structure-based method using domain information. The protein interaction network contained integrin as well as STYK1, VTCN1, IDO1, CDH3, SLA-DQB1, FER, and FGFR2 which were related to the up-regulation of inflammation and the down-regulation of cell adhesion and host defense systems such as macrophage and leukocytes. These results provide clues to the knowledge and mechanism of how FMDV affects the host cell.

  • This study aimed to analyze achievement characteristics of Korean students in the results of PISA 2018 science domain. To this end, the characteristics of PISA 2009 to PISA 2018 science were analyzed in terms of the percentage of each performance level and the ratio of male and female by achievement level; in addition, the percentage of correct answers by framework subscale was compared with PISA 2015. The results showed that Korea has a higher percentage of students at the lower level of achievement as compared to the high-ranking countries of PISA, and the ratio of students at the higher level of achievement was lower. On average, the difference in achievement between boys and girls was negligible; however, but at the higher achievement level, the ratio of boys continued to be higher than that of girls. In addition, in the PISA science framework, the percentage of correct answers of the questions corresponding to 'personal' of 'contexts', 'evaluate and design scientific enquiry' of 'competencies', 'epistemic' of 'knowledge', and 'high' of 'cognitive demand' increased; similarly, and achievement improved as compared to PISA 2015. Based on these results of the study, we propose a method for improving teaching and evaluation to foster Korean students' scientific competence.
