Using the global total electron contents (TEC) measured by the TOPEX satellite from Aug. 1992 to Oct. 2005, we investigate the variations of the longitudinal wavenumber-4 (LW-4) structure in the equatorial anomaly (EA) crests with season, local time, and solar activity. Our study shows that the LW-4 structure in the EA crests ($5{\sim}20^{\circ}$ MLAT in both hemispheres) has clear four peaks at fixed longitude sectors during the daytime for both equinoxes and June solstice. In spite of being called a wavelike structure, however, the magnitudes and spatial intervals of the four peaks are far from being the same or regular. After sunset, the four-peak structure begins to move eastward with gradual weakening in its amplitude during equinoxes and this weakening proceeds much faster during June solstice. Interestingly, the longitudinal variations during December solstice do not show clear four-peak structure. All these features of the LW-4 structure are almost the same for both low and high solar activity conditions although the ion densities are greatly enhanced from low to high solar activities. With the irrelevancy of the magnetic activity in the LW-4, this implies that the large changes of the upper atmospheric ion densities, one of the important factors for ion-neutral interactions, have little effect on the formation of the LW-4 structure. On the other hand, we found that the monthly variation of the LW-4 is remarkably similar to that of the zonal component of wavenumber-3 diurnal tides at low latitudes, which implies that the lower atmospheric tidal forcing, transferred to the upper atmosphere, seems to have a dominant role in producing the LW-4 structure in the EA crests via the E-region dynamo.

Spatial-temporal meteorological features of the Ulsan metropolitan region (UMR) were analyzed using observations and high-resolution numerical modeling. Long-term trend analysis (1970~2013) showed a significant increase of $0.033^{\circ}Cyr^{-1}$ in the 5-year moving average temperature, although detailed short-term features varied, whereas wind speed and relative humidity over the same period displayed clear decreases of $-0.007ms^{-1}$ and $-0.29%yr^{-1}$, respectively. These trends indicate the effects of regional climate change and urbanization in the UMR. Seasonal variations averaged for the most recent three years, 2011~2013, showed that temperatures in three different regions (urban/industrial, suburban, coastal areas) of the UMR had similar seasonality, but significant differences among them were observed for a certain season. Urban and industrial complex regions were characterized by relatively higher temperatures with large differences (max.: $3.6^{\circ}C$) from that in the coastal area in summer. For wind speed, strong values in the range from 3.3 to $3.9ms^{-1}$ occurred in the coastal areas, with large differences clearly shown between the three regions in September and October. Diurnal variations of temperature were characterized by pronounced differences during the daytime (in summer) or nighttime (in winter) between the three regions. Results from the WRF modeling performed for four months of 2012 showed large variations in gridaverage temperature and winds in the UMR, which displayed significant changes by season. Especially, a clear temperature rise in the urban center was identified in July ($0.6^{\circ}C$ higher than nearby urban areas), and overall, relatively weak winds were simulated over urban and inland suburban regions in all seasons.

Effects of wintering and temperature on nitrogen fixation activity of nodules of Melilotus suaveolens Ledeb. grown in the field and growth chamber conditions were investigated. The biennial plants transfered to the growth chamber from winter field recovered the activity in 3 weeks of incubation and attained the maximum rate of $153{\mu}mol\;C_2H_4{\cdot}g$ fr wt $nodule^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ in 5 weeks. When root nodules which adapted to different temperatures, were pretreated with 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and then transfered to $30^{\circ}C$, nitrogen fixation activity was promoted in the nodules exposed to lower field temperature ($12^{\circ}C$) with 1$0^{\circ}C$ pretreatment. M. suaveolens maintained nitrogen fixation activity in the wide range of temperatures, and was more tolerant to lower temperature than those of other woody leguminous plants, Diurnal changes of nodule activity showed increase with sunrise and decrease with sunset during spring and autumn, but the activity was inhibited during July and August because of high temperature with stron irradiation. Nitrogen fixation activity of annual plant appeared in mid-April, and showed two peaks (104 and 43 mol $C_2H_4{\cdot}g$ fr wt $nodule^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$) in July and September, and then disappeared after October. Nitrogen fixation activity of biennial plant reappeared in mid-March after wintering and attained two peaks (102 and 82 ${\mu}mol\;C_2H_4{\cdot}g$ fr wt $nodule^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$) in April and June of flowering period, and then disappeared after July due to plant withering by severe drought.
The scattered light of solar radiance near the infrared ray area was observed to measure $H_2O$ and $O_2$ absorption lines. The changes of $H_2O$ and $O_2$ equivalent width were calculated on the basis of the measurement. $O_2$ equivalent width showed negative correlation with the amount of solar radiance; $O_2$ equivalent width had a tendency to diminish as the amount of the solar radiance increased and to increase as the amount of the solar radiance decreased. On the other hand, $H_2O$ equivalent width showed the positive correlation with the amount of solar radiance. Especially it was noted that the sum of equivalent width of absorption lines created by $H_2O$ and $O_2$ in a day was fairly constant. It is implied that the constant equivalent width is caused by the complementary development of photodissociation and recombination in $O_2$ and $H_2O$.
Objectives : Nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$ has been inconsistently associated with gradual decreases in lung function. Here, we studied the effects of $NO_2$ exposure in asthmatics by examining the association between changes in lung function and concentrations of $NO_2$ which were personally measured. Methods : Peak expiratory flow (PEF) and daily personal exposures to $NO_2$ were recorded on 28 patients with asthma (confirmed by methacholine provocation test) over 4 weeks. We used generalized estimating equations to assess the relationship between personal $NO_2$ exposure and PEF, adjusting for potential confounders such as age, gender, outdoor particulate matter, temperature, humidity, and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Results : The personal $NO_2$ exposures were higher than the corresponding ambient levels. The mean personal: ambient ratio for $NO_2$ was 1.48. The personal $NO_2$ exposures were not associated with the morning PEF, evening PEF, or the diurnal PEF variability. However, environmental tobacco smoke was negatively associated with both the morning and evening PEF. Conclusions : Among the asthmatic adults who participated in this study, we found no apparent impact of personal $NO_2$ exposures on the peak expiratory flow.
Physiological reactions of 24 six months old (22.7 kg. body weight) Barki ram lambs, to hot summer conditions, as influenced by asbestos shading at Maryout area were studied. Animals (12 shaded and 12 Unshaded) developed hyperthermia during summer as their rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) were always higher (p<0.01) than normal. Asbestos shading caused higher (p<0.05) RT and RR ($39.5^{\circ}C$ and 69.9 r.p.m. vs. 39.2 and 45.7 r.p.m.) of rams at morning (6-8 a.m.) which became lower ($39.9^{\circ}C$ and 104.3 r.p.m. vs. $40.1^{\circ}C$ and 120.5 r.p.m.) in afternoon (2-4 p.m.) as compared to sun exposure. Shading also resulted in higher hematocrit value (PCV) (35.3% vs. 33.0%) and lower (p<0.05) daily weight gain (128.57 vs. 131.43 g). Diurnal (p<0.01) and monthly (p<0.05) RT and RR changes were closely associated with air temperature (AT) fluctuations. Monthly variation (p<0.05) in PCV was evident. Puberty was reached one month later in the shaded as compared to the unshaded group (265 vs. 232.3 day, respectively). It is concluded that asbestos shading prevents efficient heat dissipation to the sky by hyperthermic rams during summer nights. Construction materials for animal shelters are of extreme practical importance.
This study investigates the characteristics of turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in autumn 2014. The 10 Hz IORS data is quality controlled and calculated to be the 30 minutes turbulent fluxes. The quality control consists of five steps: a weather check, Vickers and Mahrt (VM) sequential check, VM parallel check, flag check, and direction check. Since the IORS is an open-sea station with no orographic influence, there are no significant diurnal variations for the turbulent fluxes and 10 m wind speed. According to stabilities, the unstable and semi-unstable states appear more than 28% and 70% in autumn, respectively and they have strong winds of over $10m\;s^{-1}$. In addition, the turbulent fluxes increase with increasing wind speed. In particular, the latent heat flux and its deviations are clearly shown because the latent heat flux is influenced by the change of both the sea surface roughness and wave height induced by the wind. To demonstrate the changes of the turbulent fluxes before and after typhoon, Vongpong (1419), which is the most intense typhoon affecting the Korean Peninsula in 2014, is considered. The turbulent flux fluctuates in accordance with the location of Vongpong. The turbulent fluxes have a large (small) variation when Vongpong approaches (retreats) at the IORS. The overall results represent that the IORS data helps us understand physical processes related to air-sea interaction by providing the valuable and reliable observed data.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute researchers have installed and operated magnetometers at Bohyunsan Observatory to measure the Earth's magnetic field variations in South Korea. In 2007, we installed a fluxgate magnetometer (RFP-523C) to measure H, D, and Z components of the geomagnetic field. In addition, in 2009, we installed a Overhauser proton sensor to measure the absolute total magnetic field F and a three-axis magneto-impedance sensor for spectrum analysis. Currently three types of magnetometer data have been accumulated. In this paper, we use the H, D, Z components of fluxgate magnetometer data to investigate the characteristics of mid-latitude geomagnetic field variation. To remove the temporary changes in Earth's geomagnetic filed by space weather, we use the international quiet days' data only. In other words, we performed a superposed epoch analysis using five days per each month during 2008-2011. We find that daily variations of H, D, and Z shows similar tendency compared to previous results using all days. That is, H, D, Z all three components' quiet intervals terminate near the sunrise and shows maximum 2-3 hours after the culmination and the quiet interval start from near the sunset. Seasonal variations show similar dependences to the Sun. As it becomes hot season, the geomagnetic field variation's amplitude becomes large and the quiet interval becomes shortened. It is well-known that these variations are effects of Sq current system in the Earth's atmosphere. We confirm that the typical mid-latitude geomagnetic field variations due to the Sq current system by excluding all possible association with the space weather.
A production model was constructed by combining the production rate and biomass of Sargassum confusum measured at monthly intervals on the coast of Ohori, Korea, to estimate the algal production for a given period. The production for a certain period, e.g., for a year (P/SUB yr/), was calculated from the equation: P/SUB yr/ = .int.P/SUB t/$.$B/SUB t/dt, where pl and Bl are the production rate and biomass at time t. P/SUB l/ was considered as a function of temperature and light. Photosynthesis-Irradiance curves obtained from the in situ experiments were applied for P/SUB l/ Temperature and light intensity can be expressed as periodic functions of time (T, L=f(t)). Diurnal values of water temperature and light intensity at 3 m depth where S. confusum mainly found were substituted into the equation of P/SUB l/. Simulations using our models show that temperature was one of the most sensitive factors operating on the primary production. Thirty percent decrease of light intensity by cloud cover was estimated to decrease the annual production by 5%.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of shading treatment on the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and its any correlations in Liriope platyphylla $W_{ANG}\;et\;T_{ANG}$. Followings were achieved as a conclusion. The net photosynthetic rate was increased as the PAR was increased and reached maximum at the $700-1000{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ of PAR in all of leaves, also this treatment caused a higher net photosynthetic rate in comparison with control. It shows the tendency of increasing stomatal conductance caused by the increment of PAR. The diurnal changes of photosynthesis, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were increased as the PAR was increased in the morning, but they indicated a decreased tendency in broad day. The relationship between net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance is well fit by the first regression linear equation. However, the values obtained from the linear equation have the different, respectively, and have highly significance. From the above results, net photosynthetic rate of shading treatment is higher than control in the same stomatal conductance. Different first regression linear equation were obtained between the transpiration rate and stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance in during the control and shading treatment, too.
