  • This paper presents a fault tolerant control strategy for Steer-by-Wire (SbW) systems. Among many problems to be solved before commercialization of SbW systems, maintaining reliability and fault tolerance in such systems are the most pressing issues. In most previous studies, dual steering motors are used to achieve actuation redundancy. However, relatively few studies have been conducted to introduce fault tolerant control strategies using rear wheel steering system. In this work, an actuator fault in front wheel steering is compensated by active rear wheel steering. The proposed fault tolerant control algorithm consists of disturbance observer and sliding mode control. The fault tolerant control performance of the proposed approach is validated via computer simulation studies with Carsim vehicle dynamics software and MATLAB/Simulink.

  • This paper considers design of a robust controller that alleviates disturbance effects and compensates performance degradation of plants with time-delay. Disturbance observer(DOB) approach as a tool of robust control has been widely employed in industry. However, since the time-delay makes the plant non-minimum phase, classical DOB cannot be applied directly to the time-delay system. By using a new DOB structure for non-minimum phase systems together with the Smith Predictor, we propose a new control algorithm for reducing the effects of disturbance and time-delay of the system.

  • In this paper, a force estimation method is proposed for the sensorless force control. For this, a disturbance observer is applied to each joint of an n degrees of freedom manipulator to obtain a simple equivalent robot dynamics(SERD) being represented as an n independent double integrator system. To estimate the output of disturbance observer in the absence of external force, the observer estimator is designed, where the uncertain parameters of the robot manipulator are adjusted by gradient method to minimize the output between the disturbance observer and the observer estimator. When the external force is exerted, the external force is estimated using the difference between the output of disturbance observer which include the external torque signal and that of observer estimator. And then, a force controller is designed for force feedback control employing the estimated force signal. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed force estimation method, several numerical examples are illustrated for the 2-axis planar type robot manipulator.

  • This paper presents an automobile traction control system by using a sliding mode controller with disturbance observer for estimating the car-body speed. First, we show that the control system, which combines an automobile system and a disturbance observer, can be divided into a controllable system and an estimated one. And, we found out that the effect of the traction control and ABS depends on the air resistance of the car. Then, the sliding mode control system is designed using the obtained combined system. And finally, the stability of this control system is verified by simulation and it shows a very satisfactory results.

  • We propose, for the first time to our knowledge, a novel gain-clamping method for EDFA in WDM Add/Drop networks by introducing a disturbance observer technique. The proposed gain-clamping control input consists of the nominal gain-clamping control such as PI(Proportional and Integral) control and the additional control input for the compensation of the effects caused by channel add/drops. The additional control input is designed using the wellknown disturbance observer technique and can be implemented very easily with general electric elements. We proved the superiority of the new technique over the previous methods by showing simulation result of minimized dips and spikes that appear in power profile of EDFA output.

  • In gun stabilization systems, the torque comes from the unbalance mass of gun and the base acceleration is an important source of disturbance which degrades stabilization performance. Fatigue of gear train is another important factor affecting structural safety problems. In this paper, a feedback control gain is designed by optimal control weighting to difference between motor and gun velocity, and a feedforward controller using FXLMS algorithm is adopted to investigate those problems. Experimental results show that the feedforward compensator based on FXLMS can reduce the disturbance effects. The directional convergence property according to initial conditions of the FXLMS is also shown through experiments.

  • This paper describes the servo position control for the 2-axis positioning table the servo controller consists of conventional feedback loops, disturbance observer. To reduce the contour error, which occurs in the multi-dimensions machines, cross-coupled controller(CCC) is suggested. A weak point of the CCC is their low effectiveness in dealing with arbitrary nonlinear contour such as circles and parabolas. This paper introduces a new nonlinear CCC that is based on control gains that vary during the contour movement The gains of CCC and adjusted in real time according to the shape of nonlinear contour. The feedback controller based on the disturbance observer compensated for external disturbance, plant uncertainty and bad effectiveness by friction model. Suggested servo controller which improve the contouring accuracy, apply to the 2-axis system. Simulation results on 2-axis table verify the effectiveness of the proposed servo controller.

  • In this paper an adaptive fuzzy PI controller with feedback linearizing meth od is implemented to controlling flux and torque separately in induction motor. In this paper first decoupling of torque and flux which are outputs to be controlled, is achieved by using feedback linearization methodology. Then for reducing the effect of noise and rejection of disturbance, main part of controller which is adaptive PI fuzzy controller, is designed. Coefficients of PI controller are determined by defined fuzzy rules due to error dynamic. Inputs of fuzzy system are defined sliding surfaces which consist of torque and flux errors. The main contribution of this paper is effect reduction of noise and disturbance on torque and flux which is based on fuzzy logic and nonlinear control. At last the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in presence of noise and load disturbance is simulated and comprised to applying sliding method. The results verify better effectiveness of the proposed method for effect reduction of noise and disturbance.

  • Alternate blade cavitation, rotating cavitation and cavitation surge in rocket turbopump inducers were simulated by a three dimensional commercial CFD code. In order to clarify the cause of cavitation instabilities, the velocity disturbance caused by cavitation was obtained by subtracting the velocity vector under non-cavitating condition from that under cavitating condition. It was found that there exists a disturbance flow towards the trailing edge of the tip cavity. This flow has an axial flow component towards downstream which reduces the incidence angle to the next blade. It was found that all of the cavitation instabilities start to occur when this flow starts to interact with the leading edge of the next blade. The existence of the disturbance flow was validated by experiments.
