  • An experimental control system is proposed for the attitude control of a simplified 2-DOF helicopter model. The main rotor is a rigid one, and the fuselage is simply supported by a fixed hinge point where the longitudinal motion is decoupled from the lateral one since the translations and the rolling rotation are completely removed. The yaw trim of the helicopter is performed with a tail rotor, by which the azimuthal attitude can be adjusted on the rotatable post in the yaw direction. The robust sliding mode control tracking a given attitude angle is proposed based on the flight dynamics. A pitch damper is inserted for the control of pitching angle while the compensator to reaction torque is used for the control of azimuth angle. Several parameters of the system are selected through experiments. The results shows that the proposed control method effectively counteracts nonlinear perturbations such as main rotor disturbance, undesirable chattering, and high frequency dynamics.

  • In this study, nonlinear static aeroelastic analysis system for a high-aspect-ratio wing are developed using the transonic small disturbance (TSD) and large deflection beam theory and validated. For the coupling between fluid and structure, the transformation of displacement from the structural mesh to aerodynamic one is performed by the shape function of the beam finite element and the inverse transformation of force by work equivalent load concept. Also, for the static aeroelastic analysis of the wing the use of TSD aerodynamics are justified. The validation of the system includes one of the efficient transformation methods of force and displacement.

  • In recent years, both electric utilities and end users have expressed their deep concerns about the quality of electric power. Especially, voltage sag which is one of power quality disturbance is very serious power quality problem on the power system. Voltage sag is a decrease to between 0.1 and 0.9 pu in rms voltage magnitude on the power system for durations from 0.5 cycles to 1 minute. These voltage sags are usually caused by fault conditions, overloads, and starting of large motors. The wavelet transform has attracted considerable attention in the field of power quality analysis recently. It has proved to be a powerful tool to study those transients that have time-localized information. In this paper, different types of voltage sags are simulated by using EMTP. This paper proposes the effective technique for voltage sag detection using wavelet transform.

  • Quad-rotor is one kind of a rotorcraft in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which consists of four rotors in total and fixed-pitch blades located at the four corners. This vehicle is emerging as popular platform for UAV research due to the simplicity of its construction, the ability of hovering and the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, etc. Because of those specific capabilities, this vehicle can be applied to many fields: search and rescue, mobile sensor networks, fire observation, etc. However a quad-rotor is much affected by the disturbance due to the characteristics of structure. So this vehicle needs attitude control for stabilizing. In this paper, we design the control law for automatic stabilization. The PID controller is used to control a brushless DC motor. And an accelerometer is used to measure the roll and pitch angles of a quad-rotor.

  • In this paper, a new approach that is based on EEAC & only with network solutions for CS&S in the transient stability assessment is developed. The proposed CS&S algorithm in conjunction with EEAC to include the capability of performing on-line TSA without TDS is used to calculate the critical clearing time for stability index. In this algorithm, all generators are represented by classical models and all loads are represented by constant impedance load models. The accelerating & synchronizing power coefficient as an index is determined at its disturbance through solving network equation directly. As mentioned above, a new index for generator is generally used to determine the critical generators group. The generator rotor angle is fixed for non-critical generators group, but has equal angle increments for critical generators group. Finally, the critical clearing time is calculated from the power-angle relationship of equivalent OMIB system. The proposed CS&S algorithm currently being implemented is applied to the KEPCO system. The CS&S result was remarkably similar to TSAT program and SIME. Therefore, it was found to be suitable for a fast & highly efficient CS&S algorithm in TSA. The time of CS&S for the 139 contingencies using proposed CS&S algorithm takes less than 3 seconds on Pentium 4, 3GHz Desktop.

  • It has been well known that the assumption of full state availability is one of the most important restrictions to the practical realization of VSCS. And several attempts to alleviate the assumption had been made. however, it is not easy to find a positive scheme among them. Recently, an output feedback variable structure control system(OFVSCS) was proposed and the effectiveness of the scheme was validated for the disturbance free systems. The purpose of this study is to propose a robust OFVSCS that have the robust properties against process parameter variations and external disturbances by extending the basic OFVSCS and to evaluate its control performances. The ROFVSES is composed of dynamic switching function and output feedback switching control inputs that are constructed by the use of the unknown vector modeling technique. With the proposed schems, existence of sliding mode is guaranteed and any nonzero bias can be suppressed in the face of disturbances and process parameter variations as far as well-known matching condition is satisfied. Due to the fact that the ROFVSCS is driven by small number of measured informations, the practical application of VSCS for the systems with unmeasurable states and for high order systems, the conventional schemes cannot be applied, is possible with the proposed scheme. It is noticeable that the implementation cast of VSCS can be considerably reduced without sacrifice of control performances by adopting ROFVSCS since there is no need to measure the states with high measurement cost.

  • In piezoelectric flexible structures, the contribution of vibration modes to the dynamic response of system may change with the location of piezoelectric actuator patches, which means that the ability of actuators to control vibration modes should be taken into account in the development of modal reduction model. The spatial $H_2$ norm of modes, which serves as a measure of the intensity of modes to system dynamical response, is used to pick up the modes included in the reduction model. Based on the reduction model, the paper develops the state-space representation for uncertain flexible tructures with piezoelectric material as non-collocated actuators/sensors in the modal space, taking into account uncertainties due to modal parameters variation and unmodeled residual modes. In order to suppress the vibration of the structure, a dynamic output feedback control law is designed by imultaneously considering the conflicting performance specifications, such as robust stability, transient response requirement, disturbance rejection, actuator saturation constraints. Based on linear matrix inequality, the vibration control design is converted into a linear convex optimization problem. The simulation results show how the influence of vibration modes on the dynamical response of structure varies with the location of piezoelectric actuators, why the uncertainties should be considered in the reductiom model to avoid exciting high-frequency modes in the non-collcated vibration control, and the possiblity that the conflicting performance specifications are dealt with simultaneously.

  • For precise tracking control of a servo system with nonlinear friction, a robust friction compensation scheme is presented in this paper. The nonlinear friction is difficult to identify the friction parameters exactly through experiments. Friction parameters can be also varied according to contact conditions such as the variation of temperature and lubrication. Thus, in order to overcome these problems and obtain the desired position tracking performance, a robust adaptive back-stepping control scheme with a dual friction observer is developed. In addition, to estimate lumped friction uncertainty due to modeling errors, a DEKF recurrent neural network and adaptive reconstructed error estimator are also developed. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is verified through the experiment fur a ball-screw system.

  • Glass melting process is influenced by both control and observation factors, where control factors include quantity and mixing ratio of raw material, the amount of fuel and air in-take. Further observation factors include temperature and pressure at each step of process inside glass melting furnace. Ambient Control is an effective means to eliminate complications from excessive variation among raw materials, or external disturbance from wide fluctuation of environment around equipments. Ambient Control uses both control and observation factors mentioned above. This study suggests an effective Proactive Control System that can enable genuine 4M standardization in glass melting furnace by applying Ambient Control.

  • Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is one of endangered wildlife species whose population size is declining in Korea. To manage and conserve habitat for Eurasian otter, it is crucial to understand which habitat components affect otter habitat qualities. The objectives of this study were to develop a habitat suitability model of Eurasian otter in Soraksan National Park, to validate the model in Odaesan National Park. The research methods of this study were as follows. First, trace data and characters of Eurasian otter habitat were collected with Geographic Information System (GIS) data and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers between 2000 and 2002. Second, the habitat use factors were identified as habitat characteristics of Eurasian otter and classified with habitat use and availability analyses. Third, significant factors of habitat model were extracted by Chi-square test. The last, Eurasian Otter Habitat Suitability Model (EOHSM) was employed by logistic regression method. Otter habitat use was positively associated with the reeds and shrubs areas adjacent to streams, the size of boulders, and low human disturbance in Soraksan National Park by EOHSM. This model had a classification accuracy of 74.4% at cutoff value of 0.5. Model validation showed a classification accuracy of 86.6 % at cut off value of 0.5 for otter habitat in Odaesan National Park.
