  • Measuring similarity between two signals is a key element of the location template matching (LTM) method which is one of impact source localization technique. As a measure of similarity, the correlation coefficient is most widely used, and the group delay based method is recently proposed to improve the accuracy of finding the impact source. In practice, the LTM method assumes that the similarity between two signals decreases as the distance between two corresponding impact points increases, where the distance between two neighboring impact points defines the grid spacing. In this paper, it is shown that this assumption is not always true but the correlation coefficients fluctuate forming a main robe and many side robes as the distance between two neighboring impact points increases. On the other hand, the standard deviation of group delay sharply increases with a small increase of the grid spacing. These are demonstrated by using a simple cantilever beam. Based on these findings, an optimal way of implementing the LTM method may be suggested by combining the correlation coefficient and the group delay based approaches.

  • The study on query relaxation which provides approximate answers has received attention. In recent years, some arguments have been made that semantic relationships are useful to present the relationships among data values and calculating the semantic distance between two data values can be used as a quantitative measure to express relative distance. The aim of this article is a hierarchical metricized knowledge abstraction (HiMKA) with an emphasis on combining data abstraction hierarchy and distance measure among data values. We propose the operations and the query relaxation algorithm appropriate to the HiMKA. With various experiments and comparison with other method, we show that the HiMKA is very useful for the quantified approximate query answering and our result is to offer a new methodological framework for query relaxation.

  • In huge video databases, the effective video content indexing method is required. While manual indexing is the most effective approach to this goal, it is slow and expensive. Thus automatic indexing is desirable and recently various indexing tools for video databases have been developed. For efficient video content indexing, the similarity measure is an important factor. This paper presents new similarity measures between frames and proposes a new algorithm to index video content using Kullback-Leibler distance defined between two histograms. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm using Kullback-Leibler distance gives remarkable high accuracy ratios compared with several conventional algorithms to index video content.

  • In pattern classification, the Bhattacharyya distance has been used as a class separability measure. Furthemore, it is recently reported that the Bhattacharyya distance can be used to estimate error of Gaussian ML classifier within 1-2% margin. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method utilizing the Bhattacharyya distance. In the proposed method, we first predict the classification error with the error estimation equation based on the Bhauacharyya distance. Then we find the feature vector that minimizes the classification error using two search algorithms: sequential search and global search. Experimental reslts show that the proposed method compares favorably with conventional feature extraction methods. In addition, it is possible to determine how man, feature vectors arc needed for achieving the same classification accuracy as in the original space.

  • In this paper, we propose an indexing method to support efficient similarity search for sequence databases. We present a new distance measurement called minimum DTW distance to enhance the filtering effects. The minimum DTW distance is to measure the minimum distance between a sequence data and the group of similar sequences. It enables similarity search through hierarchical index structure by filtering sequence databases. Finally, we show the superiority of our method through some experiments.

  • Background: Previous studies of radial nerve conduction study (NCS) did not present how to measure the length of the radial nerve across the elbow, and did not even mention how to manage the spiral course of the nerve. This study aimed to applicate the most reliable method to measure the length of the radial nerve during NCS. Methods: Three points (A, B, and C) were determined along the relatively straight course of the radial nerve. The distance was measured using three different methods: L1) straight distance corresponding to the A-C distance, L2) sum of the distances corresponding to the A-B-C distance, L3) based on the L2, but the elbow is flexed at a $45^{\circ}$ angle. We compared the three methods of distance measurement and the calculated nerve conduction velocities (V1, V2, and V3) in normal healthy subjects. Results: 19 normal participants were enrolled. The mean value for method L1, L2 and L3 were $22.5{\pm}1.8cm$, $24.0{\pm}2.1cm$, and $23.2{\pm}2.1cm$ (p < 0.001). Calculated conduction velocities using those distance measurement methods as follows (p < 0.001): V1 ($60.9{\pm}2.7m/s$), V2 ($64.6{\pm}3.3m/s$), and V3 ($63.4{\pm}3.9m/s$). V2 was significantly greater than V1 and V3 (p < 0.001, p = 0.010, respectively). Conclusions: The distance measurement using a stopover point near the lateral epicondyle between two stimulus points in position of a fully extended elbow with forearm pronation is the most appropriate posture for radial motor NCS.

  • We propose an object recognition system and experiential game contents using Kinect to maximize object recognition rate by utilizing underwater robots. we implement an ice hockey game based on object-aware interactive contents to validate the excellence of the proposed system. The object recognition system, which is a preprocessor module, is composed based on Kinect and OpenCV. Network sockets are utilized for object recognition communications between C/S. The problem of existing research, degradation of object recognition at long distance, is solved by combining the system development method suggested in the study. As a result of the performance evaluation, the underwater robot object recognized all target objects (90.49%) with 80% of accuracy from a 2m distance, revealing 42.46% of F-Measure. From a 2.5m distance, it recognized 82.87% of the target objects with 60.5% of accuracy, showing 34.96% of F-Measure. Finally, it recognized 98.50% of target objects with 59.4% of accuracy from a 3m distance, showing 37.04% of F-measure.

  • In this Paper, we Propose an automatic lung registration technique using local distance propagation for correcting the difference between two temporal images by a patient's movement in abdomen CT image obtained from the same patient to be taken at different time. The proposed method is composed of three steps. First, lung boundaries of two temporal volumes are extracted, and optimal bounding volumes including a lung are initially registered. Second, 3D distance map is generated from lung boundaries in the initially taken volume data by local distance propagation. Third, two images are registered where the distance between two surfaces is minimized by selective distance measure. In the experiment, we evaluate a speed and robustness using three patients' data by comparing chamfer-matching registration. Our proposed method shows that two volumes can be registered at optimal location rapidly. and robustly using selective distance measure on locally propagated 3D distance map.

  • The growth of internet infrastructure and a tremendous increment of internet users lead actively to found internet newspaper publishing companies, which are able to dig up and publish own news articles. In disregard of these quantitative growth of internet newspaper companies, the qualitative growth of them doesn't coincide with the quantitative growth. Therefore, to require social responsibility and to build healthy media environment, Korean government has put in force registration system of internet newspaper company. According to this system, internet newspaper companies have to produce at the inside over 30 percent of weekly publications, and this requisite increases the needs of its verification. This paper investigates technologies to measure the self-supplied news volumes of internet newspaper company, examines validity of them, and presents appropriate method to measure. To compare huge amount of news articles rapidly, the presented method is based on the modified edit-distance, which reflects human cognition of word and empirical information related with it. To prove correctness of our presented method, we show experimental results for some real internet news articles.

  • Muilti-dimensional feature vector matching algorithm uses multiple features such as intensity, gradient, variance, first or second derivative of a pixel to find correspondence pixels in stereo images. In this paper, we proposed a new method for adjusting automatically the weight of feature in multi-dimensional feature vector matching considering sharpeness of a pixel in feature vector distance curve. The sharpeness consists of minimum and maximum vector distances of a small window mask. In the experiment we used IKONOS satellite stereo imagery and obtained accurate matching results comparable to the manual weight-adjusting method.
