To improve the water quality, particularly for sea bathers, the behaviour of wastewater from sewage outfalls in water adjacent to Swansea, UK, was studied using a mathematical model. The water quality in the sewage receiving basin was determined using factors like the outfall diffuser location(distance from land boundary), sewage treatment scheme, discharge time, and bacteria decay rate, etc. With respect to these factors, an optimal strategy for sewage discharge was then investigated to minimize bacteria levels along the bathing beaches. As water quality criteria, predicted faecal coliform levels were monitored along the coast adjacent to the outfall locations. The resultant values were compared with EC Mandatory(<2000, 95 % of 20 samples) and Guideline Standards(< 100, 80 % of 20 samples). For the advective-diffusion equation, the non linear advective terms were represented using the ULTIMATE algorithm and the third-order accurate QUICKEST scheme to avoid numerical diffusion. Details of the simulation results are then presented as an optimal policy for sewage discharge in the region.
Glow discharge has lots of attractive properties, such as lower discharge sustaining voltage, no generation of ozone, and so on. And more, ionizer was developed recently using an atmospheric pressure glow discharge. On the other hand, ionizer needs a compressed or blown air to transport ion for charged objects. This air is very useful in explosive hazardous area to prevent the explosion of flammable gas and/or vapor by ignition sources, e.g. electrical spark. In this paper, we investigated the ionizing characteristic of atmospheric pressure glow discharge by controlled air flow rate from 5 liters to 60 liters a minute, and compared with decay time between the corona discharge and glow discharge as a function of some direction and distance from discharge ion source. We confirmed that an air flow rate needs 25 liters a minute to sustain the most suitable atmospheric pressure glow discharge and to increase an ionizing efficiency.

By using the general theoretical framework proposed recently for treating the fluorescence quenching kinetics, we investigate the effect of light pulse intensity on the decay of fluorescence which follows excitation of fluorophors by the light pulse of very short but finite duration. It is seen that conventional theory breaks down when the exciting light pulse has a pulse width comparable to the fluorescent lifetime and its intensity is very high. We also find that even when the light intensity is not too high, conventional theory may fail in either of the following cases: (i) when the quencher concentration is high, (ii) when there is an attractive potential of mean force between the fluorophor and quencher, or (iii) when the energy transfer from the fluorophor to the quencher may also occur at a distance, e.g., via dipole-dipole interaction. The validity of the predictions of the present theory may thus be tested by fluorescence quenching experiments performed under such situations.
Workers who work at indoor and outdoor environment near busy road are suspected to be exposed to high-elevated air pollutant levels during working hours. This study evaluated the working-time nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) exposure for workers (repairmen and polishers) of shoe-stalls. Since shoe-stalls have particularly been located near busy road in Korea, workers might be high exposure to $NO_2$ from traffic exhaust as well as indoor sources of shoe-stall such as portable gas range (butane gas) during working hours. In this study, we measured the indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of shoe-stalls. Simultaneously, outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of building through sidewalk from shoe-stall were measured. High $NO_2$ exposure for workers of shoe-stalls was considered to be inflow of outdoor source of exhausted emission from vehicles and indoor source from usage of gas range to polish the shoe. Indoor/outdoor $NO_2$ concentration ratio ($0.94{\pm}0.22$) in Seoul was higher than that ($1.06{\pm}0.34$) in Asan, because ambient $NO_2$ level was high in Seoul and usage of gas range was prevalent in Asan. According to $NO_2$ concentrations by distance from roadside to building through sidewalk, $NO_2$ concentrations showed the decreased trend with distance. The results of this study can be utilized by municipal authorities in urban planning for evaluating effects of future traffic planning and land use.

An optimal layout condition of the offshore wind turbines is studied by using the response surface analysis which is a kind of the design of experiments. Based on the assumption that total 36 turbines would be installed in the offshore wind farm, the number and distance of the rows and columns are used as the design variables and the efficiency decrease of power generation due to the wake decay by the interactions of turbines and the installation cost of the internal electric grid are considered as the objective functions of the response surface analysis for the layout design of turbines. Useful design information can be derived by analyzing the relationship between the design variables and target functions. It is found that the row number and the distance between rows should be minimized, and the optimal distance between columns should be estimated and adopted to the layout design within the specified design range in order to ensure the economics for the offshore wind farm.

Background: Knowledge of linkage disequilibrium (LD) levels among different populations can be used to detect genetic diversity and to investigate the historical changes in population sizes. Availability of large numbers of SNP through new sequencing technologies has provided opportunities for extensive researches in quantifying LD patterns in cattle breeds. The aim of this study was to compare the extent of linkage disequilibrium among Iranian cattle breeds using high density SNP genotyping data. Results: A total of 70 samples, representing seven Iranian indigenous cattle breeds, were genotyped for 777962 SNPs. The average values of LD based on the $r^2$ criterion were computed by grouping all syntenic SNP pairwises for intermarker distances from 0 Kb up to 1 Mb using three distance sets. Average $r^2$ above 0.3 was observed at distances less than 30 Kb for Sistani and Kermani, 20 Kb for Najdi, Taleshi, Kurdi and Sarabi, and 10 Kb for Mazandarani. The LD levels were considerably different among the Iranian cattle breeds and the difference in LD extent was more detectable between the studied breeds at longer distances. Lower level of LD was observed for Mazandarani breed as compared to other breeds indicating larger ancestral population size in this breed. Kermani breed continued to have more slowly LD decay than all of the other breeds after 3 Kb distances. More slowly LD decay was observed in Kurdi and Sarabi breeds at larger distances (>100 Kb) showing that population decline has been more intense in more recent generations for these populations. Conclusions: A wide genetic diversity and different historical background were well reflected in the LD levels among Iranian cattle breeds. More LD fluctuation was observed in the shorter distances (less than 10 Kb) in different cattle populations. Despite of the sample size effects, High LD levels found in this study were in accordance with the presence of inbreeding and population decline in Iranian cattle breeds.
This study was to observe the occurrence of heterotrophic bacteria in terms of free chlorine residuals in two different water distribution systems belong to both K and Y water treatment plant. The data analyzed in this study showed that in distribution systems(DS), the free chlorine residuals were decreased from 0.10 to 0.56 ㎎/1 for K, and 0.51 and 0.78 ㎎/l for Y The decay of free chlorine were clearly higher in both March and August than those in January. The HPC in DS were ranged from 0 to 40 CFU/ml for K,0 to 270 CFU/ml for Y, on R2A medium. In particular, Its level was relatively high at consumers' ground storage tanks, taps and point-of-end area of Y, The predominant genera found in the distribution systems were Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas (branch of Pseudomonas), Microroccus, Bacillus, Staphylococcus. The diversity of heterotrophic bacteria was increased in the end-point area. Most of them were either encapsulated cells or cocci of gram-positve. In conclusion, the point-of-end area in distribution systems showed that the longer flow distance from WTP the greater diversity and higher level of heterotrophic bacteria due to the significant decay of free chlorine residuals.

This study investigated the location conditions, spatial linkage structures, and firm specific problems of small firms of the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area by sectors and by areal distribution. The major locational advantages were closeness to customers and suppliers followed by accessibility to inter-state highways. These results were supported by spatial linkage structures in which within-region linkages occupied a greater portions of linkage, showing the importance of small firms in the regional economy. The linkage patterns showed distance decay effect with high elasticity. While there were no significant differences of locational conditions and spatial linkage structures of small firms between core and peripheral area, a slight difference was identified among sectors. Chemical related manufacturing firms show different locational conditions and spatial linkage structure with weak within-local linkages. The main locational disadvantages were lack of qualified labor, undesirable neighborhood, heavy tax, and space shortage. Considering the biggest problems such as lack of qualified labor, difficulties in sales/marketing, low accessibility to financial resource, and technological inability, the inter-related cooperative business networks among firms and regional institutions, consulting companies, chamber of commerce, and universities are needed to stimulate regional economic development and survival of small firms.

In this research, we measured the number of lanes, distance, disposition of apartment that are affecting the road traffic noise to evaluate the current condition of G city's road traffic noise. We decide on a basis regarding an apartment price formation factor, and the apartment current price and the results that compared. To have a point scale, we set the maximum road traffic noise at a 8 lane road for 5 points, give 4 points for a 6 lane road, which has a $2.1{\sim}2.5\;dB(A)$ difference compared to a 8 lane road, give 3 points for a 4 lane road, which has a $5.2{\sim}5.5\;dB(A)$ difference compared to a 8 lane road, and set 2 points for a 2 lane road and lower. If we set the standard floor plan as horizontal and a living room facing the roadside, the horizontal and living room facing the opposite side of the road is 1 point because it differs by 14.1 dB(A), and the vertical is 3 points since the difference is 5.3 dB(A). If we make grades by the distance, making standard the fifth floor with little soundproof effect from apartment to road, we observe a measurement below 2.9 dB(A) at a distance of less than 10 m and 5 dB(A), decreased at a distance of 20 m. Therefore, 4 points were given for less than 10m, 3 points for $10{\sim}20\;m$, 2 points for more than 20 m as we can apply the effect of a decay distance of line sound source and the decrease in noise effects of more than 6 dB(A), 1 point for more than 40m, and 0 points for more that 80 m since it is negligible. 28 apartments got 0 points because there is no effect of road traffic noise from other apartments, and 50 apartments where only the road at one side effect them got $5{\sim}10$ points. 4 apartments (17-2, 6-3, 10-4, 3-3) received over 20 points. 15 cases showed a difference between developer price and resale price, and 11 cases (73%) among them showed the same trend (price increases with a low road traffic noise restriction factor point) with the point of road traffic noise restriction factor. 4 cases demonstrated the opposite trend, showing price increases with a high restriction factor point. Among the 4 cases, case numbers 2,6 and 9 appear to be more affected by the location factor (business district) than the road traffic noise restriction factor, and case number 1 appears to be affected by the building factor (openness and direction).
In marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) modeling, it may be difficult to evaluate primary fields accurately using conventional linear filters because they decay very rapidly with distance. However, since there exists a closed-form solution to the Hankel transform in TM mode for a homogeneous half space, we can assess the accuracy of linear filters for evaluating the Hankel transform. As a result, only nine out of 36 source-receiver pairs show that EM fields decrease linearly in semi-log scale with an increase of source-receiver distance, while EM fields are either 0 or not reduced significantly due to an effect of the air layer. There also exist closed-form solutions for the nine pairs, and the others can be evaluated accurately with a relatively short filter. This paper proposes a method which uses closed-form solutions for TM-mode Hankel transforms and a filter with 61 coefficients for TE-mode ones.
