  • A long term deactivation study was carried out with commercial MEA provided by Hyundai Motor Co. The deactivation phenomena were observed only at high voltage region where there is no diffusion-limited reaction. A rapid deactivation was observed up to 40h owing to the sintering of Pt particles. This was followed a gradual increase in the activity up to 300 h, which is probably caused by improvement in the electrode properties in the presence of current during the reaction. After 300 h, monotonic decrease in the activity was observed owing to dissolution of Pt particles especially in the cathode. The presence oxygen is the cause of oxidation and dissolution of Pt. The dissolution rate can be somewhat retarded by generation of current, which reduces Pt ion back to Pt in the cathode.

  • For producing the fine ribs structure of plasma display panel, the metal ions of barrier materials during the etching process should be understood on the etching mechanism with etching conditions. Etching was done on bulk glasses of the $BaO_B_2O_3-ZnO$ system with $HNO_3$ solution at $40^{\circ}C$. The surface structure of glasses and ion dissolution were analyzed by ICP (Inductive Coupled Plasma measurement). The structure and surface of the etched bulk glass were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy and nanoindenter. As a result, Ba (3-35 ppm/min) and Zn (2-27 ppm/min) ions as major components were leached in the solution and the leached layers were found to be phosphor-rich surface layers. A decrease of the bridge oxygen and relative increase of non bridge oxygen in the etched glass were found by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

  • Water and oxygen are two of the most essential molecules for many species on earth. Their unique properties have been studied in many areas of science. In this study, the interaction of water and oxygen molecules was observed at the nano-scale. Using molecular dynamics, a water droplet with 30,968 water molecules was simulated. Then, 501 oxygen molecules were introduced into the domain. A few oxygen molecules were attracted to the surface of the water droplet due to van der Waals forces, and some oxygen molecules actually entered the water droplet. These interactions were visualized and quantified at four temperatures ranging from 280 to 370 K. It was found that at high temperatures, there was a higher possibility of the oxygen molecules penetrating the water droplet than that at lower temperatures. However, at lower temperatures, oxygen molecules were more likely to be found interacting at the surface of the water droplet than at high temperatures.

  • NiO is commonly used as the cathode for the molten carbonate fuel cell due to its stability and high electrical conductivity in molten carbonates and oxygen atmosphere. However, long-term operation of MCFC has a serious problem which is the degradation of cathode material, the so-called Ni dissolution. In the present study, we have attempted to synthesize a new alternative cathode material as Co/Nb-coated NiO cathode. The results obtained in this study suggest that the Co/Nb-coated NiO cathode can be utilized as having lower dissolution and higher cell performance than those of the pure NiO cathode.

  • Peroxide is used frequently to provide electron acceptors to aerobes for the purpose of in situ bioremediation of contaminated soil/sediment. In this study, oxygen release rate of peroxides and factors affecting on dissolution and diffusion of oxygen into pore water were evaluated. Peroxides studied in this study were magnesium peroxide ($MgO_2$), calcium peroxide ($CaO_2$), and sodium percarbonate ($Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$). $Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$ showed the highest oxygen release rate per unit mass and the shortest release duration time among three peroxides. A simple first-order decay model for predicting the release rate of oxygen from peroxide into pore water was presented and used to fit the experimental data. The first order oxygen release rate constants k for $MgO_2$, $CaO_2$ and $Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$ were 0.45 /hr, 3.22 /hr and 134 /hr, respectively. If $MgO_2$ was mixed with clay, oxygen release rate was lowered significantly mainly due to limitation of contact area and diffusion, implying that oxygen can be provided to the indigenous aerobes for the extended period of time.

  • The hydrogen storage performance and electrochemical properties of $Zr_{1-X}Ti_X(Mn_{0.2}V_{0.2}Ni_{0.6})_{1.8}$(X=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) alloys are investigated. The relationship between discharge performance and alloy characteristics such as P-C-T characteristics and crystallographic parameters is also discussed. All of these alloys are found to have mainly a C14-type Laves phase structure by X-ray diffraction analysis. As the mole fraction of Ti in the alloy increases, the reversible hydrogen storage capacity decreases while the equilibrium hydrogen pressure of alloy increases. Furthermore, the discharge capacity shows a maxima behavior and the rate-capability is increased, but the cycling durability is rapidly degraded with increasing Ti content in the alloy. In order to analyze the above phenomena, the phase distribution, surface composition, and dissolution amount of alloy constituting elements are examined by S.E.M., A.E.S. and I.C.P. respectively. The decrease of secondary phase amount with increasing Ti content in the alloy explains that the micro-galvanic corrosion by multiphase formation is little related with the degradation of the alloys. The analysis of surface composition shows that the rapid degradation of Ti-substituted Zr base alloy electrode is due to the growth of oxygen penetration layer. After comparing the radii of atoms and ions in the electrolyte, it is clear that the electrode surface becomes more porous, and that is the source of growth of oxygen penetration layer while accelerating the dissolution of alloy constituting elements with increasing Ti content. Consequently, the rapid degradation (fast growth of the oxygen-penetrated layer) with increasing Ti substitution in Zr-based alloy is ascribed to the formation of porous surface oxide through which the oxygen atom and hydroxyl ion with relatively large radius can easily transport into the electrode surface.

  • Electrical conduction of $SrZrO_3$ doped with $Y_2O_3$ was measured as a function of gas atmosphere and temperature by impedance spectroscopy. Hydrogen dissolution, due to an enhanced driving force in the presence of oxygen, results in protonation by water incorporation. Proton conductivity increased with water vapor pressure, ${P_w}^{1/2}$. In the pure hydrogen atmosphere, the dissolution of hydrogen,$H_2(g)=2H_{i}$ +2e', is supposed to be driven by a reduced activity of electrons, ascribable to their trapping in oxygen vacancies. The activation energy of electrical conductivity was 50 kJ/mol, in wet argon atmosphere in the temperature range of $600~900^{\circ}C$, similar to those reported for proton conduction in the literature. Grain boundary effect in proton conduction was substantial in the 10% doped case at temperatures lower than $700^{\circ}C$.

  • We observed characteristic oxidation and dissolution phenomena induced by dissolved oxygen for mackinawite that is produced via sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) living in anaerobic environments such as soils and groundwater. We tried to recognize the role of the sulfide minerals that usually coexist with some stabilized radionuclides (e.g., reduced uranium), which can be reoxidized and redissolved by an oxygen-rich groundwater invaded into a contaminated area. The mackinawite produced by 'Desulfovibrio desulfuricans', a sulfate-reducing bacterium, was conducted to be dissolved for 2 weeks by some oxidants such as 'hydrogen peroxide' and 'sodium nitrite'. Although mineralogical oxidation and dissolution characteristics were different from each other according to the oxidants, the initially oxidized solution was early stabilized through the oxygen consumption by ${\mu}m$-sized sulfide particles and the resultant increase of sulfate in solution. From these results, we can anticipate that the large amount of sulfide minerals generated by SRB can not only repress the anoxic environment to be disturbed by the consumption of oxygen in groundwater, but also contribute to stabilize the reduced/precipitated radionuclides as a buffer material for a long time.
