Timber is one of the few natural, renewable building materials and glulam is a type of engineering wood product. In the present work, timber-based braces are applied for retrofitting midrise Special Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF) using two types of timber base braces (Timber base glulam, and hybrid Timber-Steel-BRB) as alternatives for retrofitting by traditional steel bracings. The improving effects of adding the bracings to the SMRF on seismic characteristics of the frame are evaluated using load-bearing capacity, energy dissipation, and story drifts of the frame. For evaluating the retrofitting effects on the seismic performance of SMRF, a five-story SMRF is considered unretofitted and retrofitted with steel-hollow structural section (HSS) brace, Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) brace, and hybrid Timber-Steel BRB. Using OpenSees structural analyzer, the performance are investigated under pushover, cyclic, and incremental loading. Results showed that steel-HSS, timber base Glulam, and hybrid timber-steel BRB braces have more significant roles in energy dissipation, increasing stiffness, changing capacity curves, reducing inter-story drifts, and reducing the weight of the frames, compared by steel bracing. Results showed that Hybrid BRB counteract the negative post-yield stiffness, so their use is more beneficial on buildings where P-Delta effects are more critical. It is found that the repair costs of the buildings with hybrid BRB will be less due to lower residual drifts. As a result, timber steel-BRB has the best energy dissipation and seismic performance due to symmetrical and stable hysteresis curves of buckling restrained braces that can experience the same capacities in tension and compression.

Prediction performances by Einstein's equation of diffusivity, Peskin's model, Three-Equation model, Four-Equation model and Algebraic Stress Model, have been compared by analyzing twophase (air-solid) turbulent jet flow. Turbulent kinetic energy equation of dispersed phase was solved to investigate effects of turbulent kinetic energy on turbulent diffusivity. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of particles has been considered by solving turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate equation of dispesed phase and applying it to turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase. Results show that turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase can be expressed by turbulent kinetic energy ratio between phases and prediction of turbulent kinetic energy was improved by considering turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of dispersed phase for modelling turbulent diffusivity. This investigation also show that Algebraic Stress Model is the most promising method in analyzing gas-solid two phaes turbulent flow.
One of the central problems in astudy of the coastal surface wave environment is predicting the transformation of waves as they propagate toward the shore. The transformation is mainly due to the existence of obstacles, such as breakwaters and vertical cylinders. In general, the types of wave transformation can be classified as follows: wave diffraction, reflection, transmission, scattering, radiation, et al. This research dealtwith wave transmission and dissipation problems for two dimensional irregular waves and vertical circular cylinders. Using the unsteady mild slope equation, a numerical model was developed to calculate the reflection and transmission of regular waves from a multiple-row circular breakwater and vertical cylinders. In addition, hydraulic model experiments were conducted with different values for the properties between tire piles and the opening ratio (distances) between the rows of the breakwater. It was found that the transmission coefficients decreased with a decrease in the opening ratio and an increase in the rows of vertical cylinders. A comparison between the results of hydraulic and numerical experiments showed reasonable agreement.
Characteristics of holdup and flow behavior of fluidized solid particles were investigated in a liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed ($0.102m{\times}3.5m$). Effects of liquid velocity ($U_L$), particle size ($d_P$) and solid circulation rate ($G_S$) on the solid holdup, overall particle rising velocity, slip velocity between liquid and particles and hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate in the riser were examined. The particle holdup increased with increasing $d_P$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $U_L$. The overall particle rising velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $d_P$. The slip velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $d_P$ but did not change considerably with $G_S$. The energy dissipation rate, which was found to be closely related to the contacting frequency of micro eddies, increased with increasing $d_P$, $G_S$ or $U_L$. The solid particle holdup was well correlated with operating variables such as $U_L$, $d_P$ and $G_S$.

This paper employs numerical tools to obtain an optimal thermal design of a heat exchanger with plain-fins. This heat exchanger is located at the condensing section of a crevice-type heat pipe. The plain-fins in the heat exchanger are radically mounted to two tubes in the condensing section. To obtain the optimal design parameters, a computational fluid dynamics technique is introduced and applied to different placement configurations in a system module. Owing to its effects on the heat pipe performance, the temperature difference between the tube surfaces and ambient air is investigated in detail. A greater heat dissipation rate occurs when the plain-fin offsets change from 2 to 3 mm. When this temperature difference is ${\Delta}T=70^{\circ}C$, the upper part of the plain-fins undergoes an accumulation of heat. At below $70^{\circ}C$, the dissipation of heat is accepted. A rectangular plain-fin geometry with varying widths and heights does not have a significant impact on the heat dissipation through-out the overall system. In addition, the temperature distributions between different plain-fin pitches show an equal profile even with different fin pitches.
This experimental research presents the seismic performance of steel reinforced high-strength concrete (SRHC) short columns. Eleven SRHC column specimens were tested under simulated earthquake loading conditions, including six short column specimens and five normal column specimens. The parameters studied included the axial load level, stirrup details and shear span ratio. The failure modes, critical region length, energy dissipation capacity and deformation capacity, stiffness and strength degradation and shear displacement of SRHC short columns were analyzed in detail. The effects of the parameters on seismic performance were discussed. The test results showed that SRHC short columns exhibited shear-flexure failure characteristics. The critical region length of SRHC short columns could be taken as the whole column height, regardless of axial load level. In comparison to SRHC normal columns, SRHC short columns had weaker energy dissipation capacity and deformation capacity, and experienced faster stiffness degradation and strength degradation. The decrease in energy dissipation and deformation capacity due to the decreasing shear span ratio was more serious when the axial load level was higher. However, SRHC short columns confined by multiple stirrups might possess good seismic behavior with enough deformation capacity (ultimate drift ratio ${\geq}2.5%$), even though a relative large axial load ratio (= 0.38) and relative small structural steel ratio (= 3.58%) were used, and were suitable to be used in tall buildings in earthquake regions.
The concept of the seismic slit shear wall was proposed in the early 1990's. A series of experimental and theoretic studies on the wall with reinforced concrete short connecting beams cast in the slit were carried out. In this paper another type of slit shear wall is studied. It is one with vertical slit purposely cast within the wall, and the rubber belt penetrated by a part of web shear reinforcement as seismic energy-dissipation device is filled in the slit. Firstly, an experiment under cyclic loading was carried out on two shear wall models, one slit and the other solid. The failure mechanism and energy-dissipation capacity are compared between the two different models, which testifies the seismic performance of the slit wall improved significantly. Secondly, for engineering practice purpose, a macroscopic analytical model is developed to predict the nonlinear behavior of the slit shear wall under cyclic loading. The mechanical properties of each constituent elements of this model are based on the actual behavior of the materials. Furthermore, the effects of both the axial force and bending moment on the shear behavior are taken into account with the aid of the modified compression-field theory. The numerical results are verified to be in close agreement with the experimental measurements.

In this paper, PET(Ployethylene Terephthalate) films with semiconducting and interface layers were investigated, The electrical properties, such as volume resistivity, tan$\delta$(dissipation factor) and breakdown strength at various temperatures were measured. Thermal analysis of PET and semiconducting films were measured and compared by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) of each film. It is found that the volume resistivity of films(dependence on semiconducting interface layers)and electrical properties of PET films are changed ,Breakdown strength and dissipation factor of PET films with semiconducting layer (PET/S/PET) are decreased more greatly than PET and PET/PET films, due to the increase of charge density of charges at two contacted interfaces between PET and semiconductor, The dissipation factor of each films in increased with temperature,. For PET/S/PET film, is depended on temperature more than PET of PET/PET. However, the breakdown strength is increased up to 85$\^{C}$ and then decreased over 100$\^{C}$The electrical properties of PET films with semiconducting/interface layer are worse than without it It is due to a result of temperature dependency, which deeply affects thermal resistance property of PET film more than semiconducting/interface layers.

In this paper, the strengthening method was proposed for improving the seismic performance of the vulnerable structural frames. To improve the brittle characteristics of columns, aramid fiber sheet was used for the lateral confinement of columns. And to introduce the energy dissipation capacity, a steel damper with S-shaped struts was installed. By making the unreinforced and reinforced specimens with full size specimens were evaluated for lateral load resistance capacity. It was confirmed the strengthening effects by the evaluation of failure shape, strength, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation capacity. Also from the FE analysis using ABAQUS, the hysteretic behavior of the specimens were predicted and evaluated.
