An efficient code has been developed to predict dispersion of indoor air pollutants The computing capability of the code has been compared with that of a commercial code inn a benchmark test. After that, the code has been employed to compute dispersion of a pollutant released from a new furniture, a kind of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). A sofa which generates formaldehyde is implemented by using an immersed boundary method. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is employed to obtain time-dependent velocity and scalar fields. LES has bee regarded as an academic tool, but the newly-developed code reveals a possibility of application of LES to practical problems, especially dispersion of indoor pollutants.

The purpose of this study is to provide response methods to minimize the damage from chemical terrorism in a naturally ventilated indoor system using several types of dispersion simulations. Three chemical warfare agents such as sarin(GB), phosgene and chlorine gas which have high potential to be used in terror or to be involved with accidents were selected in this simulation. Fire dynamic simulation based on Large Eddy Simulation which is effective because of less computational effort and detailed expression of the dispersion flow was adopted to describe the dispersion behavior of these agents. When the vent speed is 0.005m/s, the heights of 0.1 agent mass fraction are 0.9m for sarin, 1.0m for phosgene and 1.1m for chlorine gas, and the maximum mass fraction are 0.27 for all three agents. However, when the vent speed is increased to 0.05m/s, the heights of 0.1 agent mass fraction become 1.6m for all three agents and maximum mass fraction inside the room increase to 0.70 for sarin, 0.58 for phosgene and 0.53 for chlorine gas. It is shown that molecular weight of the agents has an important role for dispersion, and it is important to install ventilation system with height less than 1.6m to minimize the damage from chemical toxicity.
This study compared and analyzed existing research on dispersion models and selected the EPA's Industrial Source Complex(ISC) model as a model suitable for the domestic petrochemical industry for 3-dimensional simulation and developed a simulation system applying. 3-dimensional algorithm with this ISC dispersion model as a basis As a result of this study, the 3D dispersion model based on ISC can help estimate a exact accident damage zone, make a emergency plan and control a ignition source.

A simulation of 10 Gbps optical fiber transmission system using DCf(dispersion compensating fiber) for the dispersion compensation is performed. In order to analyze the NRZ pulse propagation in nonlinear, dispersive and lossy fiber, the split-step finite element method that is combination of finite element method and finite difference method is used. Also, we obtained the optical eye diagram and BER characteristics at the receiver of the system that is contained the optical amplifier and system noises. As a result of simulation, we obtain that the dispersion penalty is about 0.8dB after 50km transmission and the receiver sensitivities at $10^{-9}$ BER are -27.4dBm with EDFA pre-amplifier of 12dB gain and -15.6dBm without EDFA.

Dispersion management (DM), optical phase conjugation (OPC), and the combination of DM and OPC are promising techniques to compensate for optical signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effects. The system performance improvement in DM links combined with OPC has been reported; however, the fixed residual dispersion per span (RDPS) usually used in these links restricts the flexibility of link configuration. Thus, in this paper, a flexible optical link configuration with artificially distributed single-mode fiber (SMF) lengths and RDPS in the combination of DM and OPC is proposed. Simulation results show that the best artificial distribution pattern is the gradually descending distribution of SMF lengths and the gradually ascending distribution of RDPS, as the number of fiber spans is increased, regardless of the average RDPS, the optimal net residual dispersion, and the dispersion coefficient of the dispersion compensating fiber.

For the simulation of tsunami propagation an active dispersion-correction two-dimensional finite element model has been developed based on a shallow-water wave equation. This model employs an arbitrary triangular mesh and an explicit time integration scheme. However, the physical dispersion effects as included in the Boussinesq equations can be taken into account in the computation. The validity of the dispersion-correction scheme developed in this study is verified through the comparison of numerical solutions calculated using the new scheme with analytical ones considering dispersion effect of waves. As a result, the present model is shown to be considerably accurate.

Background: High-fidelity meteorological data is a prerequisite for the realistic simulation of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive materials near nuclear power plants (NPPs). However, many meteorological models frequently overestimate near-surface wind speeds, failing to represent local meteorological conditions near NPPs. This study presents a new high-resolution (approximately 1 km) meteorological downscaling method for modeling short-range (< 100 km) atmospheric dispersion of accidental NPP plumes. Materials and Methods: Six considerations from literature reviews have been suggested for a new dynamic downscaling method. The dynamic downscaling method is developed based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.6.1, applying high-resolution land-use and topography data. In addition, a new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization has been implemented for a realistic representation of the atmospheric surface-layer momentum transfer. Finally, a year-long simulation for the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, located in southeastern coastal areas, has been made for 2016 and evaluated against operational surface meteorological measurements and the NPPs' on-site weather stations. Results and Discussion: The new dynamic downscaling method can represent multiscale atmospheric motions from the synoptic to the boundary-layer scales and produce three-dimensional local meteorological fields near the NPPs with a 1.2 km grid resolution. Comparing the year-long simulation against the measurements showed a salient improvement in simulating near-surface wind fields by reducing the root mean square error of approximately 1 m/s. Furthermore, the improved wind field simulation led to a better agreement in the Eulerian estimate of the local atmospheric dispersion. The new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization was essential for improved performance, suggesting the importance of the subgrid-scale momentum interactions in the atmospheric surface layer. Conclusion: A new dynamic downscaling method has been developed to produce high-resolution local meteorological fields around the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, which can be used in short-range atmospheric dispersion modeling near the NPPs.

With an aim at eliminating the numerical dispersion error arising from the numerical simulation of stress wave propagation, numerical dispersion characteristics of the wave equation based one-dimensional finite element model are analyzed and some dispersion control scheme are proposed in this paper The dispersion analyses are carried out for two types of mass matrix, namely the consistent and the lumped mass matrices. Based on the finding of the analyses, dispersion correction techniques are developed for both the implicit and explicit schemes. For the implicit scheme, either the weighting factor for the spatial derivatives of each time level or the lumping coefficient for mass matrix is adjusted to minimize the numerical dispersion. In the case of the explicit scheme an artificial dispersion term is introduced in the governing equation. The validity of the dispersion correction techniques proposed in this study is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solutions obtained using the Present techniques with the analytical ones.

In this study, a complex simulation prototype was developed for rapid and accurate prediction of chemical dispersion range in order to reduce human casualties caused by chemical accidents. Complex simulation considered the leakage momentum during the near-field dispersion to take into account the leakage characteristics of the chemical. In the far-distance dispersion process, the wind distribution of the existing model, which was presented uniformly, was improved using weather and topographical information around the accident site, to realize a wind field similar to the actual one. Finally, the damage range was more precise than the existing model in line with the improved near- and far-distance dispersion process. Based on the results of damage range prediction of the complex simulation, it is expected that it will be highly utilized as a system to support policy decision-making such as evacuation and return of residents after a chemical accident.
