The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has confirmed a global limit of 0.5 % for sulfur in fuel oil used on board ships with effect from January 1, 2020. Among various alternatives to respond to these regulations on sulfur content in fuel oil, such as LNG ships, SOx scrubbers, and very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO). VLSFO is preferred owing to its low investment costs. As more ships are expected to use VLSFO, VLSFO spills are expected to increase. In particular, when the seawater temperature is below the pour point of VLSFO, VLSFO solidifies when it is spilled, which makes controlling spills difficult. In this study, six types of VLSFO produced in Korea and one type of high-sulfur fuel oil (MF380) were compared in terms of the dispersibility of dispersants according to the seawater temperature conditions. The results confirmed that the six type of VLSFO did not satisfy the domestic standards for dispersant rate (60 % or more for 0.5 min, 20 % or more for 10 min). Morever, the dispersant rate of the six types of VLSFO was low compared with that of the high-sulfur fuel oil. The results of this study are expected to be used to set the direction of dispersant control in the case of VLSFO spills.

Freeze drying for porous Mo was accomplished by using $MoO_3$ powder as the source and camphor-naphthalene eutectic system as the sublimable material. Eutectic composition of camphor-naphthalene slurries with the initial $MoO_3$ content of 5 vol%, prepared by milling at $55^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of oligomeric dispersant, was frozen at $-25^{\circ}C$. The addition of dispersant showed improvement of dispersion stability in slurries. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphor-naphthalene during drying in air for 48 h. To convert the $MoO_3$ to metallic Mo, the green body was hydrogen-reduced at $750^{\circ}C$, and sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The sintered samples, frozen by heated Teflon cylinder, showed large pores with the size of about 40 ${\mu}m$ which were aligned parallel to the sublimable vehicles growth direction. The formation of unidirectionally aligned pores is explained by the rejection and accumulation of solid particles in the serrated solid-liquid interface.

In this study, amorphous aluminum silicate powder was prepared using co-precipitation method, and the influence of spray-dried aluminum silicate granular powder was analyzed and optimized by controlling the amount of aluminum silicate powder and dispersant added to the slurry. As a result, granular powder was optimally produced under the conditions of powder content of aluminum silicate slurry of 27.5 wt% or less, dispersant addition amount of 0.8 wt% or more, pH 6~9. An average particle size of granular powder showed approximately 14 ㎛ at the powder contents of 20 and 22.5 wt% of the slurry, and approximately 19 ㎛ at the powder contents of 25 and 27.5 wt% of the slurry.
Fullerene/polystyrene nanoparticles having the average size of 300 nm ~ 1 ${\mu}m$ were prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and potassium persulfate were used as a dispersant and an initiator, respectively. The contents of fullerene in the nanoparticle were controlled to be from 10 to 57 wt% by varying the feed ratio, which was confirmed by IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and elemental analyses. Dynamic light scattering experiments revealed the particles have a broad size distribution. Further characterizations of the nanoparticles were performed by using SEM and TEM observation. The high content of fullerene in the particles will find applications in photovoltaic and organic semiconducting area.
Fine anthracite is very difficult to upgrade by conventional processes such as gravity concentration or froth flotation, because large quantities of fine coals are generated at the mining and preparation stages and a significant portion of these fine coals are mixed with gangue minerals. This study, therefore, was carried out for the purpose of improving recovery of low ash clean coal, effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coal and removal of sulphur from high-sulphur coals by employing the method of selective agglomeration using oil or polystrene flocculants, for coals which are generally hydrophobic in nature will be extracted by using flocculants. Studies were performed by varying solid concentration, concetration of bridging liquid, mixing speed and mixing time, balling speed and balling time, dispersant dosage, flocculant dosage, pulp pH, and particle size. The results were : when the methods of the oil agglomeration and selective flocculation were employ(in the two process the sample was ground to the size of -74 micron), 1) ash content of the agglomerated coal was 9.85, 7.83%, 2) combustibel recovery of it was 98.5%, 93.5%, respectively. It was observed in selective flocculation that polystyrene is an effective flocculant for coal, De-entrapment of shale from the concentrate flocculated by mechanical agitation was necessary for substantional reductions in final ash content.
In this study, freeze drying of a porous Ni with unidirectionally aligned pore channels is accomplished by using a NiO powder and camphene. Camphene slurries with NiO content of 5 and 10 vol% are prepared by mixing them with a small amount of dispersant at $50^{\circ}C$. Freezing of a slurry is performed at $-25^{\circ}C$ while the growth direction of the camphene is unidirectionally controlled. Pores are generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green bodies are hydrogen-reduced at $400^{\circ}C$ and then sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the NiO powder is completely converted to the Ni phase without any reaction phases. The sintered samples show large pores that align parallel pores in the camphene growth direction as well as small pores in the internal walls of large pores. The size of large and small pores decreases with increasing powder content from 5 to 10 vol%. The influence of powder content on the pore structure is explained by the degree of powder rearrangement in slurry and the accumulation behavior of powders in the interdendritic spaces of solidified camphene.

Research on enhancing the mechanical strength, lightweight properties, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity of composite materials by incorporating nano-materials is actively underway. Thermoplastic resins can change their form under heat, making them highly processable and recyclable. In this study, Polyamide-Nylon 6 (PA6), a thermoplastic resin, was utilized, and as reinforcing agents, fused carbon nano-materials (FCN) formed by structurally combining Carbon Nanotube(CNT) and Graphene were employed. Nano-materials often face challenges related to cohesion and dispersion. To address this issue, Silane functional groups were introduced to enhance the dispersion of FCN in PA6. The manufacturing conditions for the composite materials involved determining the use of a dispersant and varying FCN content at 0.05 wt%, 0.1 wt%, and 0.2 wt%. Tensile strength measurements were conducted, and FE-SEM analysis was performed on fracture surfaces. As a result of the tensile strength test, it was confirmed that compared to pure PA6, the strength of the polymer composite with a content of 0.05 wt% was improved by about 60%, for 0.1 wt%, about 65%, and for 0.2 wt%, the strength was improved by 50%. Also, when compared according to the content of FCN, the best strength value was shown when 0.1 wt% was added. The elastic modulus also showed an improvement of about 15% in the case of surface treatment compared to the case without surface treatment, and an improvement of about 70% compared to pure PA6. Through FE-SEM, it was confirmed that the matrix material and silane-modified nanomaterial improved the dispersibility and bonding strength of the interface, helping to support the load evenly and enabling effective stress transfer.
The fabrication process of zirconia gel-casting was studied to obtain dense zirconia on a large scale or with complicated shapes. As an experimental parameter, two different particle sizes ($0.1{\mu}m$ and $0.7{\mu}m$) of zirconia powder were applied to the gel-casting process. The viscosity behavior of slurries incorporating 40 vol% of zirconia powder was examined as a function of the dispersant content and the solid load to determine the optimum dispersion conditions. In addition, the gelation time with an initiator, the de-binding behavior, and the main factors affecting densification were examined. The densification of the gel-casted zirconia green body depended on the mixing ratio between the monomer and the dimer and on the zirconia particle size. A green body with a small particle size of $0.1{\mu}m$ showed less densification, with a relative density of 93%. This may be due to the excess number of bubbles created through interactions between the larger particle surface and polymer additives during the ball-milling process.

Thermal dissipation was investigated for poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite films containing graphite and multi wall carbon nanotube(CNT) powders as filler materials. After mixing PMMA with fillers, solvent, and dispersant, the pastes were prepared by passing through a three roll mill for three times. The prepared pastes were coated $15{\sim}40{\mu}m$ thick on a side of 0.4 mm thick aluminium alloy plate and dried for 30 min at $150^{\circ}C$ in an oven. The content of fillers in dried films was varied as 1, 2, and 5 weight % maintaining the ratio of graphite and CNT as 1:1. Raman spectra from three different samples exhibited D, G and 2D peaks, as commonly observed in graphite and multi wall CNT. Among those peaks, D peak was prominent, which manifested the presence of defects in carbon materials. Thermal emissivity values of three samples were measured as 0.916, 0.934, and 0.930 with increasing filler content, which were the highest ever reported for the similar composite films. The thermal conductivities of three films were measured as 0.461, 0.523, and $0.852W/m{\cdot}K$, respectively. After placing bare Al plate and film coated samples over an opening of a polystyrene box maintained for 1 h at $92^{\circ}C$, the temperatures inside and outside of the box were measured. Outside temperatures were lower by $5.4^{\circ}C$ in the case of film coated plates than the bare one, and inside temperatures of the former were lower by $3.6^{\circ}C$ than the latter. It can be interpreted that the PMMA composite film coated Al plates dissipate heat quicker than the bare Al plate.
The fabrication process and properties of SiC particulate preforms with high volume fraction above 50% were investigated. The SiC particulate preforms were fabricated by vacuum-assisted extraction method after wet mixing of SiC particulates of 48 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, $SiO_2$ as inorganic binder, cationic starch as organic binder and polyacrylamide as dispersant in distilled water. The SiC particulate preforms were consolidated by vacuum-assisted extraction, and were followed by drying and calcination. The drying processes were consisted with natural drying at $25^{\circ}C$ for 36 hrs and forced drying at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs in order to prevent the micro-cracking of SiC particulates preform. The compressive strengths of SiC particulate preforms were dependent on the inorganic binder content, calcination temperature and calcination time. The compressive strength of SiC preform increased from 0.47 MPa to 1.79 MPa with increasing the inorganic binder content from 1% to 4% due to the increase of $SiO_2$ flocculant between the interfaces of SiC particulates. The compressive strength of SiC preform increased from 0.90 MPa to 3.21 MPa with increasing the calcination temperatures from 800 to 120$0^{\circ}C$ under identical calcination time of 4hrs. The compressive strength of SiC preform increased from 0.92 to 1.95 MPa with increasing the calcination time from 2 hrs to f hrs at calcination temperature of 110$0^{\circ}C$. The increase of compressive strength of SiC preform with increasing the calcination temperature and time is due to the formation of crystobalite $SiO_2$ phase at the interfaces of SiC particulates.
