  • Through the development and dissemination of embedded devices, studies that may help patients are rapidly emerging. Recently, as wearable devices have become one of the ways to diagnose diseases in daily life, they are being studied as a way to assist severely ill patients to lead their daily lives. Among them, a method of detecting and giving signals to detect and solve symptoms using acceleration sensors to diagnose Parkinson's disease is being studied, and there is no study to measure and analyze various factors that can affect Parkinson's disease. To solve them, we designed and developed a wearable device, P-Band, with various sensors capable of diagnosing related symptoms, including acceleration sensors capable of diagnosing Parkinson's disease. In this paper, the overall structure of the P-Band and the description and operation method of the measurable sensors are presented. In addition, it was confirmed that the symptoms of Parkinson's patients could be determined complexly through the results measured in actual patients.

  • Purpose: Illness intrusiveness (illness induced lifestyle disruption) by symptoms was investigated in 439 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Method: The cross-sectional and retrospective survey design was used. Fatigue, disability, pain, and depression were considered as symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Result: Patients were reported to perceive more illness intrusiveness than other chronic disease patients such as end stage renal disease, bipolar disorder, and peritoneal dialysis patients. They were especially intrusive into work, health, and active recreation domains. Stepwise regression analysis identified four variables counting for 26% of illness intrusiveness variances: fatigue, disability, marital status, and depression. All of the symptoms except pain were found to significantly predict illness intrusiveness. Fatigue explained 16% of illness intrusiveness variances. Conclusion: Fatigue and depression usually overlooked by health professionals must be carefully assessed and managed to reduce perceived illness for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among perceived stress, ways of coping, and health promoting behaviors in patients with chronic cardiovascular disease(CCVD). Method: Data was collected by questionnaires from 436 patients with CCVD in a General Hospital in Seoul. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The health promoting behavior showed a significant positive correlation with self-efficacy and social support. Also, the health promoting behavior showed a significant negative correlation with perceived stress and symptoms of stress. The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promoting behaviors was symptoms of stress. Conclusion: A combination of symptoms of stress, social support, self-efficacy, and perceived stress account for 41% of the variance in health promoting behaviors of patients with CCVD. Data from this study suggest that symptoms of stress, social support, ways of coping, and perceived stress are significant influencing factors on health promoting behaviors of patients with CCVD.

  • Paranasal sinusitis has many different kinds of symptoms ; rhinorrea, cough. post nasal drip. headache, etc. In some cases, patients, mostly adults, had no symptom except headache. We treated a 8-year-old child who only complained headache without any other symptoms related in nasal disease. Her symptoms ; headache, nausea, vomiting and general weakness, showed typical type of disease which were due to phlegm. So we diagnosed her headache as a " Headache due to phlegm". Interestingly, her PNS images were diagnosed as bilateral maxillary sinusitis. After one and a half month treatment with herb-med and Aroma oil, the patient got free from all symptoms and her PNS images showed no abnormality.

  • Leaf spot symptoms were observed in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) plants growing in fields in Ansan and Hongseong, Korea, during disease surveys in 2019 and 2020. The symptoms appeared as brown to dark brown circular or irregular spots on the leaves of the plants. The disease incidence on the plant leaves in the fields investigated at the two locations ranged from 1% to 20%. Five single-spore isolates of Phoma sp. Were obtained from lesions of the diseased leaves. All the isolates were identified as Ectophoma multirostrata based on their cultural and morphological characteristics, as well as molecular analysis. Two isolates of E. multirostrata were tested for pathogenicity on water spinach leaves using artificial inoculation. The tested isolates caused leaf spot symptoms in the inoculated plants. These symptoms were similar to those observed in plants from the investigated fields. To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. multirostrata causing leaf spot in water spinach.

  • During disease surveys of Angelica acutiloba plants in Korea, leaf spot symptoms were observed in a field in Andong in July 2019, and stem rot symptoms in vinyl greenhouses in Yangpyeong in April 2020. Incidence of leaf spot and stem rot of the plants ranged from 10 to 20% and 5 to 30%, respectively. Morphological and cultural characteristics of fungal isolates from the leaf spot and stem rot symptoms fitted into those of the genus Phoma. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of two single-spore isolates from the symptoms using concatenated sequences of LSU, ITS, TUB2, and RPB2 genes authenticated an independent cluster from other Didymella (anamorph: Phoma) species. Moreover, the isolates showed different morphological and cultural characteristics in comparison to closely related Didymella species. These discoveries confirmed the novelty of the isolates. Pathogenicity of the novel Didymella species isolates was substantiated on leaves and stems of A. acutiloba through artificial inoculation. Thus, this study reveals that Didymella acutilobae sp. nov. causes leaf spot and stem rot in Angelica acutiloba.

  • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) is a global infectious disease with rapid spread. Some patients have severe symptoms and clinical signs caused by an excessive inflammatory response, which increases the risk of mortality. In this study, we reanalyzed scRNA-seq data of cells from bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of patients with COVID-19 with mild and severe symptoms, focusing on Ab-producing cells. In patients with severe disease, B cells seemed to be more activated and expressed more immunoglobulin genes compared with cells from patients with mild disease, and macrophages expressed higher levels of the TNF superfamily member B-cell activating factor but not of APRIL (a proliferation-inducing ligand). In addition, macrophages from patients with severe disease had increased pro-inflammatory features and pathways associated with Fc receptor-mediated signaling, compared with patients with mild disease. CCR2-positive plasma cells accumulated in patients with severe disease, probably because of increased CCL2 expression on macrophages from patients with severe disease. Together, these results support the hypothesis that different characteristics of B cells might be associated with the severity of COVID-19 infection.

  • Objectives : This study is aimed to develop the algorithm to diagnose Taeeumin's symptomology, by the method of literature research on Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Methods : Applying the sequential differentiations of Taeeumin's symptomology, or exterior-interior disease differentiation, favorable-unfavorable pattern differentiation, and mild-severe-dangerous-urgent pattern differentiation, "Donguisusebowon" and related literatures have been reviewed. Results and Conclusions : 1) 1st step: Taeeumin's exterior pattern and interior pattern are differentiated by the indexes of whole-body cold or heat pattern, sweating, and facial complexion. 2) 2nd step: The favorable pattern of the Taeeumin's exterior disease can be detected by indexes of the existence of fever, generalized pain while the unfavorable one by indexes of the abnormal condition of digestion and feces, and fearful throbbing. The favorable pattern of the Taeeumin's interior disease can be diagnosed based on indexes of eye pain, dry nose, dry throat, and heat symptoms that occur in various parts of the body, while the unfavorable one by indexes of thirsty, urination, feces and specific symptoms which can be induced by dryness. And in the both unfavorable patterns the dark complexion on the faces is revealed. 3) 3rd step: The mild-severe patterns of the favorably exterior disease are differentiated in terms of the condition of fever, while the mild-severe patterns of the favorably interior disease are in differentiated based on whether abnormal symptoms are revealed in the gastrointestinal tract. Both of the unfavorably dangerous-urgent patterns in exterior and interior diseases are differentiated by the symptoms such as tinnitus, dim vision, weakness of legs and back pain, and lack of strength in legs and thighs.

  • The oriental medical doctors who had studied Shang Han Run thought highly of meridians and until now it was generally known that the chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of Emperor's Classic Internal Medicine(ECIM: 皇帝內經, 素門, 熱論) was the basis of Shang Han Run. The chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of ECIM was the first text in which the basic theory on six-channels according to the types of illness was introduced. In my point of view, the theory of treating six-channels had close relation to the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM(皇帝內經, 靈樞ㆍ經脈篇) as well as the chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of ECIM. Therefore I took a look at the origin of treating six-channels in Shang Han Lun and illuminated again the meaning to compare the parts of in Shang Han Lun with the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM. Conclusion : The symptoms of TaiYin-channel(太陰經) in the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM were, for the most part, accord with those of TaiYin-disease in Shang Han Lun. Furthermore, the symptoms in Shang Han Lun were explained definitely and in detail. Therefore the theory of Shang Han Lun has been developed on the basis of ECIM with the changes of the times. TaiYin-disease implied symptoms of pi-spleen meridian(脾經) and fei-lung meridian(肺經). Therefore Shang Han Lun was the foundation of treatment based on overall analysis of signs and symptoms(辨證論治) in respect of meridian as well as the text in which the steps of infectious diseases(外感病) of human bodies were explained.
