  • This paper presents an approach to optimally design the air bearing surface (ABS) of the head slider by using the approximation methods. The reduced basis concept is used to reduce the number of design variables. In the numerical calculation, the progressive quadratic response surface modeling (PQRSM) is used to handle the non-smooth and discontinuous cost function. A multi-criteria optimization problem is formulated to enhance the flying performances over the entire recording band during the steady state and track seek operations. The optimal solutions of the sliders, whose target flying heights are 12 nm and 9 nm, are automatically obtained. The flying heights during the steady state operation become closer to the target values and the flying height variations during the track seek operation are smaller than those for the initial one. The pitch and roll angles are also kept within suitable ranges over the recording band.

  • This paper proposes sliding mode state for robust speed control of induction motor. Sliding mode state observer is robust for measurement noise, modeling-error and load disturbance. The pole of sliding mode state observer can be placed at (0,0) in Z-plane for fast response. This method is, namely, deadbeat control. Sliding mode state observer output is discontinuous on a switching hyperplance, that causes harmful effects such as current harmonics and speed oscillation. In this paper, also the reducing method of the chattering of sliding mode state observer output is proposed. The proposed system is digitally implemented with TMS320C31.

  • A new adaptive dual reciprocity boundary element method for dynamic analysis of 3-D structures is presented in this paper. It is based on finding the best approximation function of a radial basis function (RBF) group $f=r^n+c$ which minimize the error of displacement field expansion. Also, the effects of some parameters such as the existence of internal points, number of RBF functions and position of collocation nodes in discontinuous elements are investigated in this adaptive procedure. Three numerical examples show improvement in dynamic response of structures with adaptive RBF in dual reciprocity with respect to ordinary BEM.

  • An induction motor position control system based on the sliding mode control is presented. In the sliding mode control, control function is discontinuous on the hyperplane, which causes harmful effects such a s current harmonics and acoustic noise in the motor drive application. In this study, a low pass filter is introduced between the sliding mode controller output and the motor controller input to reduce these effects. The filter, however, makes the torque response slggish and the system performance may become poor in cost of chattering reduction. To overcome these problems, the bandwidth of the filer is varied according to the error function. It is shown that the proposed sliding mode control with variable-bandwidth filter shows good performance, which is confirmed through experiments.

  • A tensegrity module structure is suitable type for spatial structures. Because the tensegrity is composed of set of discontinuous compressive elements (struts) floating within a net of continuous tensile elements (cables), the system can provide the basis for lightweight and strong. However, despite the advantages of tensegrities, design and fabrication of the systems have difficulty because of form-finding methods, pin-connection and the control of prestress. In this paper, the new pin-connection method was invented to make the tensegrity module. The production process and practical implementation of uniformly compressed the tensegrity structures by using a UTM are described. Experiments showed the mechanical response and failure aspects of the tensegrity system.

  • In the RFID system, the reader transmits a query message to tags in order to identify a unique ID of tags within its detection range. The procedures for arbitrating a collision is essential because the multiple tags can response simultaneously in the same to the query of the Reader. This procedure is known as conflict resolution algorithm and it is a key technology in the RFID system. In this paper, we proposed a variable bits M-ary QT algorithm based on Manchester coding techniques. The proposed algorithm use the location information of the collision bits in the reader and tags. The proposed algorithm can reduce the number of the query-response cycle because it is capable of recognizing discontinuous bits and a variable number of bits. From computer simulation, the proposed method give better performance than the conventional M-ary QT techniques in terms of response, recognition efficiency, communication overhead.

  • The numerical investigations have been carried out on reinforced concrete slab against blast loading to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element based numerical models using commercial package ABAQUS. The response of reinforced concrete slab have been studied against the influence of weight of TNT, standoff distance, boundary conditions, influence of air blast and surface blast. The results thus obtained from simulations were compared with the experiments available in literature. The inelastic behavior of concrete and steel reinforcement bar has been incorporated through concrete damage plasticity model and Johnson-cook models available in ABAQUS were presented. The predicted results through numerical simulations of the present study were found in close agreement with the experimental results. The damage mechanism and stress response of target were assessed based on the intensity of deformations, impulse velocity, von-Mises stresses and damage index in concrete. The results indicate that the standoff distance has great influence on the survivability of RC slab against blast loading. It is concluded that the velocity of impulse wave was found to be decreased from 17 to 11 m/s when the mass of TNT is reduced from 12 to 6 kg. It is observed that the maximum stress in the concrete was found to be in the range of 15 to $20N/mm^2$ and is almost constant for given charge weight. The slab with two short edge discontinuous end condition was found better and it may be utilised in designing important structures. Also it is observed that the deflection in slab by air blast was found decreased by 60% as compared to surface blast.

  • With basis of the development of information communication techniques in recent year, the digital processing techniquy also has been growed fast. The digital processing technique have used signals - speech and image processing- for processing of transmission and analysis. After we get and save the signals. Effective signal processing techniques have varied filters and typical digital filters are FIR filter and IIR filter. The FIR digital filter is more secure because phase response characteristics have linear phase. But, FIR digital filters have a problem to product the Gibbs phenomenon generating around a discontinuous point. A propose of filer is to remove the problem. Therefore, in this paper I was proposed a method using FIR digital filter applied a modified window function and the method was compared with conventional methods.

  • This paper presents a scheme to improve the line current distortion of power factor corrector (PFC) topology at the zero crossing point using a predictive control algorithm in both the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The line current in single-phase PFC topology is distorted at the zero crossing point of the input AC voltage because of the characteristic of the general proportional integral (PI) current controller. This distortion degrades the line current quality, such as the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the power factor (PF). Given the optimal duty cycle calculated by estimating the next state current in both the CCM and DCM, the proposed predictive control algorithm has a fast dynamic response and accuracy unlike the conventional PI current control method. These advantages of the proposed algorithm lower the line current distortion of PFC topology. The proposed method is verified through PSIM simulations and experimental results with 1.5 kW bridgeless PFC (BLPFC) topology.
