Main objectives of this study were to investigate accuracy, bias and power of linear and threshold model segregation analysis methods for detection of major genes in categorical traits in farm animals. Maximum Likelihood Linear Model (MLLM), Bayesian Linear Model (BALM) and Bayesian Threshold Model (BATM) were applied to simulated data on normal, categorical and binary scales as well as to disease data in pigs. Simulated data on the underlying normally distributed liability (NDL) were used to create categorical and binary data. MLLM method was applied to data on all scales (Normal, categorical and binary) and BATM method was developed and applied only to binary data. The MLLM analyses underestimated parameters for binary as well as categorical traits compared to normal traits; with the bias being very severe for binary traits. The accuracy of major gene and polygene parameter estimates was also very low for binary data compared with those for categorical data; the later gave results similar to normal data. When disease incidence (on binary scale) is close to 50%, segregation analysis has more accuracy and lesser bias, compared to diseases with rare incidences. NDL data were always better than categorical data. Under the MLLM method, the test statistics for categorical and binary data were consistently unusually very high (while the opposite is expected due to loss of information in categorical data), indicating high false discovery rates of major genes if linear models are applied to categorical traits. With Bayesian segregation analysis, 95% highest probability density regions of major gene variances were checked if they included the value of zero (boundary parameter); by nature of this difference between likelihood and Bayesian approaches, the Bayesian methods are likely to be more reliable for categorical data. The BATM segregation analysis of binary data also showed a significant advantage over MLLM in terms of higher accuracy. Based on the results, threshold models are recommended when the trait distributions are discontinuous. Further, segregation analysis could be used in an initial scan of the data for evidence of major genes before embarking on molecular genome mapping.
The objective of this present study is to understand long term(500 years) thermohydromechanical interaction behavior in the vicinity of a repository cavern on the joint location and repository depth variations. The model includes a saturated discontinuous granitic rock mass, PWR spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister surrounded with compacted bentonite inside a deposition hole, and mixed bentonite backfilled in the rest of the space within a repository cavern. It is assumed that two joint sets exist within the model. Joint set 1 includes joints of 56$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m, and joint set 2 is in the perpendicular direction to joint set 1 and includes joints of 34$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m. In order to understand the behavior change on the joint location variations, 5 different models of 500m in depth are analyzed, and additional 3 different models of 1000 m in depth are analyzed to understand the effect of depth variation.
In order to determine the testicular cycle of the Korean brown frog, Rana coreana, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the changes of germ cells in testis for adult males were investigated throughout the year. The study indicated that the spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubule of testis began in August and became most active in the month of September, and the GSI was recorded the highest and the cross area of seminiferous tubule was the widest on this period. Furthermore the seminiferous tubules at the post spawning stage appeared in testis during February, and the spermatogenesis was quiescence period of time from March to July and the GSI and the cross area of seminiferous tubule were found to be the lowest. Based on these observations, we suggest that, GSI of male Korean brown frog changes significantly between July to August, indicating the testicular cycle with discontinuous spermatogenic process, and the breeding season was confirmed to be February.
The importance of acquisition of road information has recently been increased with a rapid growth of spatial-related services such as urban information system and location based service. This paper proposes an automatic road extraction method using object-based approach which was issued alternative of pixel-based method recently. Firstly, the spatial objects were created by MSRS(Modified Seeded Region Growing) method, and then the key road objects were extracted by using properties of objects such as their shape feature information and adjacency. The omitted road objects were also traced considering spatial correlation between extracted road and their neighboring objects. In the end, the final road region was extracted by connecting discontinuous road sections and improving road surfaces through their geometric properties. To assess the proposed method, quantitative analysis was carried out. From the experiments, the proposed method generally showed high road detection accuracy and had a great potential for the road extraction from high resolution satellite images.
Contemporary architectural structures have diverse and complex forms. Such structural variety demands requisite performance from the connections in the steel structure so that the latter could resist a horizontal force, such as an earthquake. The connections are the all-important components that create the discontinuous form and that support stress concentration, determining the stiffness and toughness of the entire steel frame. In this study, a real-scale column-to-beam connection was constructed in the 600MPa-grade high-strength and high-performance steel, to test its behavior. Its material and welding characteristics were examined in this study, and its structural performance was analyzed by conducting seismic-resistance tests on the full-scale, cross-shaped column-to-beam welded connections with non-scallop, ordinary-scallop, and reinforced-scallop details. The weld ability of the high-strength, high-performance steel was also evaluated, and data regarding the seismic design for practical application were provided.

This study aims to develop a robot vision control scheme using the Newton-Raphson (N-R) method for the uncertainty of circumstance caused by the appearance of obstacles during robot movement. The vision system model used for this study involves six camera parameters (C1-C6). First, the estimation scheme for the six camera parameters is developed. Then, based on the six estimated parameters for three of the cameras, a scheme for the robot's joint angles is developed for the placement of a slender bar. For the placement of a slender bar for the uncertainty of circumstances, in particular, the discontinuous robot trajectory caused by obstacles is divided into three obstacle regions: the beginning region, middle region, and near-target region. Then, the effects of obstacles while using the proposed robot vision control scheme are investigated in each obstacle region by performing experiments with the placement of the slender bar.

We present a continuous electrical cell lysis chip, using a DC bias voltage to generate the focused high electric field for cell lysis as well as the electroosmotic flow for cell transport. The previous cell lysis chips apply an AC voltage between micro-gap electrodes for cell lysis and use pumps or valves for cell transport. The present DC chip generates high electrical field by reducing the width of the channel between a DC electrode pair, while the previous AC chips reducing the gap between an AC electrode pair. The present chip performs continuous cell pumping without using additional flow source, while the previous chips need additional pumps or valves for the discontinuous cell loading and unloading in the lysis chambers. The experimental study features an orifice whose width and length is 20 times narrower and 175 times shorter than the width and length of a microchannel. With an operational voltage of 50 V, the present chip generates high electric field strength of 1.2 kV/cm at the orifice to disrupt cells with 100% lysis rate of Red Blood Cells and low electric field strength of 60 V/cm at the microchannel to generate an electroosmotic flow of $30{\mu}m/s{\pm}9{\mu}m/s$. In conclusion, the present chip is capable of continuous self-pumping cell lysis at a low voltage; thus, it is suitable for a sample pretreatment component of a micro total analysis system or lab-on-a-chip.

It is necessary to measure the direct current with a non-contact methodology for the liquid or gas phase, as welt as the conducting metals. This paper described a theoretical consideration and experimental verification for a non-contact quantitative direct current measurement system using the Faraday effect and magnetic flux leakage. The leakage of magnetic flux occurs around a gap when a ferromagnetic core including the discontinuous gap is magnetized. Two large anisotropic domains in a magneto-optical film are occurred by the vertical component of leaked magnetic flux and the domain walls are paralleled to the center of the gap. Here, the symmetrical arrangement of domains are deflected when a vertical magnetic field is applied to the magneto-optical film. The domain wall of the magneto-optical film are relocated when a measuring current passes through the ferromagnetic core. Therefore, a direct current passing through the core can be determined quantitatively by the measurement of moving distance of the domain wall.
In this study, to find out the reason of deterioration in surface roughness of steel and cast iron after Tufftride, it has been investigated on the relation between the surface roughness and various factors such as the evolution of compound layer, surface morphology, and surface hardness, and change of pore ratio in the compound layer during Tufftride at $580^{\circ}C$. It is found that the surface roughness was increased with the evolution of compound layer during Tufftride of steel and cast iron. The change of surface roughness after Tufftride was reduced with decreasing tho content of carbon and cementite ($Fe_3C$) in the materials. in the cast irons, the various shaped graphites that was exposed to the surface should induce the discontinuous growth of the compound layer, and this resulted in the incoherent interfaces between matrix and compound layer and the deterioration of surface roughness. In the steels, the existence of cementites in the matrix resulted in the incoherent interfaces between matrix and compound layer. It is considered that during Tufftride the surface roughness must be mainly influenced by the formation of the incoherent interface between compound layer and matrix that is affected by some factors such as the microstructure, the composition, and the hardness of the matrix.
Rock masses are usually discontinuous in nature due to various geological processes and contain rock joints and bridges. Crack propagation and coalescence processes in rock bridge mainly cause rock failures in slopes, foundations, and tunnels. In this study, we focused on the crack initiation, propagation and coalescence process of rock materials containing two pre-existing open cracks arranged in different geometries. Specimens of 120${\times}$60${\times}$25 mm in size, which were made of Yeoman Marble, were prepared. In the specimens, two artificial cracks were cut with pre-existing crack angle ${\alpha}$, bridge angle ${\beta}$, pre-existing crack length 2c and bridge length 2b. Wing crack initiation stress, wing crack propagation angle, and crack coalescence stress were measured and crack initiation, propagation and coalescence processes were observed during uniaxial compression. Crack coalescence types were classified and analytical study using Ashby and Hallam model (1986) was performed to be compared with the experimental results.
