  • This paper addresses the design and fabrication of desktop die-sinking dry electrical discharge machining (EDM) system and its experimental performance analysis. The developed desktop dry EDM machine has the horizontal configuration with the size of $300{\times}200{\times}260mm$. The experimental performance analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of EDM conditions and dielectric gas temperature on the surface roughness of EDMed slots and number of EDM sparks. The experimental results demonstrate that low feed rate and large electrode displacement are good for better surface roughness and more number of EDM sparks. In addition, low temperature of dielectric gas results in better surface roughness.

  • This study describes the minimum ignition limit for LPG-Ai-r mixtures by switching sparks in radio-frequency limits using RF power supply and IEC type ignition spark apparatus. As a result, the minimum ignition limit voltage is increased in proportional to the rate of increasing of frequency in LPG-Air mixed gas. Especially, increment between 10[kHz] and 30[kHz] is typical. It is considered that ignition is caused by one discharge until 10 [kHz] and, beyond 10[kHz] ignition is caused by more than two discharges. The reason is analysed that energy loss is caused by existing pause interval between discharges.

  • This paper describes the minimum ignition limit voltages for LPG-Air 5.25[Vol$\%$] mixture gas by discharge sparks in radio-frequency limits using RF power supply and IEC type ignition spark apparatus. As a result, the minimum ignition limit voltages is increased in proportional to the rate of increasing of frequency in LPG-Air mixture gas. Especially, the minimum ignition limit voltages increase remarkably between 3[KHz] and 10[KHz]. It is considered that ignition is caused by one discharge until 3[KHz] and, beyond 3[KHz] ignitiof is caused by more than two discharges. The reason is analyzed that energy loss is caused by existing pause interval between discharges. It is considered that the result can be used for not only data for researches and development of intrinsically safe explosion-proof RF machines which are applied tole-equipments and detectors used in dangerous areas but also for datum for its equipment tests.

  • The result of a small electrostatic precipitator which is in order to decrease indoor air pollution for optimal efficiency was shown as follows. Although the closer distance between the discharge electrode and dust collecting electrode shows the better throughput efficiency by forming strong electrostatic Field, it does not have profound impact in case of optimal dust collecting area. G.P(gas passage) which is the distance from dust collecting electrode to dust collecting electrode is a crucial factor to decide dust collecting efficiency. The narrower distance of G.P shows the better throughput efficiency whereas it decreases when the distance is too narrow since sparks ensue by increasing the capacity of electrostatic charging system 5 mm regards as optimal efficiency in this experiment. Although the higher voltage shows the higher dust collecting efficiency overall, the experiment was not able to keep performing since the sparks which decrease dust collecting efficiency ensue over 40 kV. The efficient and safe voltage state is considered 3.6 kV in this experiment. The most crucial factor for dust collecting efficiency of an electrostatic precipitator which is in order to decrease indoor air pollution is applied voltage. In addition, optimal raw gas flow rate(2.4 m/sec) is more important factor than the excessive increase of dust collecting area.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the sintered carbide and die steel by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. Electrical discharge machining(EDM) removes material from the workpiece by a series of electrical sparks that cause localized temperatures high enough to melt or vaporise the metal in the vicinity of the charge. In the experiment, four types of electrode which have different diameter are used with the application of continuous direct current and axial electrode feed. The controlled factors include the dimension of the electrode. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to facilitate the removal of machining debris from the hole.

  • In the stator windings of a 6.6 kV rotating machine, internal discharges, slot discharges, and surface discharges are mainly caused by internal voids and insulation degradation. If a partial discharge(PD) occurs in an inner-part of the stator windings, it will cause electromagnetic pulses with wide frequency ranges. Discharge sparks and electromagnetic pulses generated from a discharge source, can be detected using various RF resonators like an EM sensor. In order to detect these types of electromagnetic sources, a planar patch sensor was designed and fabricated using a CST-MWS simulation, and PD signals from an artificially defected stator winding were also measured by the sensor proposed in this study. Furthermore, an HFCT was used as a reference sensor and compared with the proposed new planar patch sensor. In the results of the experiment, the planar patch sensor showed a similar performance to the HFCT sensor.

  • We present an experimental study of electrical discharge in nanoscale gaps. The discharge occurred between a cathode made of sharpened Pt-Ir wire and a gold-plated anode. Electric discharges were detected for electric potentials from 10 V to 80 V, and their gaps ranged from 50 nm to 800 nm. The spark signals indirectly showed spark phenomena such as discharges or shortages in the system. The sparks and discharges strongly depended on the electric potential (voltage) and the radius of the tips. For small gaps, the electrical discharge was random and strongly depended on the radius of the cathode tips.

  • PD(Partial discharges) are small electrical sparks that occur within the electric insulation of cables, transformers and windings on motors. PD analysis is a proactive diagnostic approach that uses PD measurements to evaluate the integrity of this equipment. Recently, several diagnostic algorithms for classifying the type of PD and locating the defect position have been developed. In this work, a new PD recognition system is proposed, which utilizes approximate coefficients of wavelet transform as a feature vector, furthermore, introduces bank of Elman networks to recognize the various PD phenomena. In order to verify the performance of the proposed scheme, it is applied to the simulated PD data.

  • The dental profession is currently experiencing a technology explosion. Processes are being replaced by modern, inexpensive, and precise techniques that can be used to solve complex restorative problems. Electrical discharge machining(EDM, known as spark erosion in Europe) is a nonconventional, industrial technique that has application in dentistry. EDM may be defined as a metal removal process using a series of sparks to erode material from a workpiece in a liquid medium under carefully controlled conditions. EDM is recently adopted in the dental laboratory to fabricate precision attachments, hybrid tele-scope crowns, Ti-ceramic crowns. EDM has also been used to achieve a passive precision metal-to-metal fit between the substructure bar and the removable superstructure and to correct the fit of implant retained restorations. In this article, a brief history and explanation of EDM is discussed and a description of the use of this process for fabricating attachments and crowns or for correcting the fit of cast restorations is presented.

  • There are a great number of papers on the Townsend discharge in gases, and many of them are concerned with the effect of the cathode. It has been regarded that there are two kinds of effect of the electrodes, especially of the cathode; (a) the effect caused by the difference of the cathode material and (b) the effect by the change of the cathode surface state even in the same material. Both of them may change the secondary coefficient following after the change of the work function, and the atter may further change the primary ionization coefficient as foreign atoms on the surface may be dseorbed in sparks to decrease the purity of the gas. Thus the two effects must be investigated independently to study the roles of the cathode in gas discharges. In this report the effect of the cathode material on the sparking voltage is described. The experiment is also carried out under the condition that the desorption of impurities from the cathode be negligible. From these the new correlativity between the work function of the cathode and the sparking voltage is obtained. In addition, the interesting character of the minimum point of the Paschen's curve can be found.
